Warner Bros seems ready to greenlight a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy following its extreme sales success last year, with the firm stating a follow-up is one of its "biggest priorities" for the next few years. When speaking to its strategic outlook at a Bank of America Conference (via Variety) today, CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels said: "Obviously, a successor to Hogwarts Legacy is one of the biggest priorities in a couple of years down the road."
With the Harry Potter IP backing it, Hogwarts Legacy was always tipped to be a sales success, but to become the USA's best-selling game of the year and break a 14-year Call of Duty and Rockstar Games streak topped all expectations. At the start of 2024, it was reported to have sold more than 22 million copies. Surprisingly, however, developer Avalanche Software never capitalised on the overwhelming success with additional content. All it's ever added post-launch was a Photo Mode and unlocked previously added cosmetic items for all consoles.
What has been rumoured, though, is there is a Director's Cut version of Hogwarts Legacy in the works, with part of the Suicide Squad team Rocksteady Studios brought in to aid development after its $200 million flop from earlier in 2024. Speaking to the release today, Wiedenfels said it was a "miss" for the company, but its efforts in the video game space continue to be a "strategic asset". With that reportedly in the works to bridge the gap between Hogwarts Legacy and its sequel, the latter isn't expected to launch for a number of years.

I hope they don't rest on their laurels and improve all the weaknesses of the first one and don't just go for a lazy cash grab...
I hope Hogwarts Legacy 2 will be a live service game. One can only wish
@Czar_Khastik it would be SoOo aWeSoMe if they did
The first game was very good and really created a wonderful sense of place. But there were definitely numerous areas where they could improve in future titles
I'm down as long as it isn't live service.
Live service hogwarts Les gooooooo!
Wonder what PS management must have been thinking watching WBs splashy single player (like Sony is known for) blowing up and their GaaS suicide squad hitting the skids. Especially knowing that the former has been Playstations bread and butter and the latter being where they'd shifted resources to at the detriment of the former.
I have a feeling Warner bros is going to ruin it
Can’t wait. They have a great foundation to work from, now they just need to fill the world (and school) with as many fun and magical activities as possible.
This will be a fantastic game!
@Czar_Khastik live service with battle and season passes 🥰
It broke the sales record held by CoD for 14 years?! 😮 Imagine parts of the media being so biased in a professional capacity to boycott a game that popular with gamers.
I've yet to play it because what I've heard anecdotally is that it's a bit heavy with filler missions and needs more focus, but I'm sure a sequel would learn from that and trim the fat.
Out of interest, did it have any microtransactions or anything like that? Is there any indication WB could be tempted to make monetise it further, like how Dead Space (I know the game is from EA) became more about the store with each passing sequel?
@riceNpea Hogwarts had zero microtransactions. There were fears before launch that the room of requirement would add GAAS elements, but that wasn't the case at all.
I believe that there was a single dlc pack with an optional combat arena, but nothing that would interfere with the game.
Having loved the original, with multiple playthroughs, I would happily buy a sequel even if it added very little in terms of new features - in fact, the less they change, the better.
If they go live service, or mess with the core gameplay / engine too much, im out.
Best case scenario would be GOWR compared to GOW 2018, or SM2 compared to the original.
The first game was great. There's certainly ways they could further improve things in the sequel, but there's a solid foundation here.
It better have Quidditch in it or whats the point....
@Rob_230 oh, that is surprising. Well, I'm hopeful then that WB will take that into account and continue in the same manner.
Do you know how to put words into italics or bold on here? I really wanted to emphasis 'is' but I don't know how.
@Rob_230 yeah haunted hogsmeade shop if I remember correctly was the additional dlc
I would love to see diagon alley added to the game and I would love to see less things to collect as 600 and something was a little much and hopefully this time you won’t have to find the map place with all 4 houses
Thoroughly enjoyed 1st one, even if it was a bit samey at points. The world itself was lovely ti explore and the 40fps mode was a welcome sweet spot.
Harry Potter and the curse of the live service.
@riceNpea there was the odd mission that was locked to the house you were placed in, but everything was pretty much there from the get go. PS had an exclusive mission but that became available to all at some point.
The first is a solid foundation, with a quality reputation/faction system and some re-working of spell mechanics a bit, I think it could be really cool.
They should make it where you can be a full on dark wizard and actually make all your choices matter,
but WB probably going to mess up the sequel with a bunch of micro transactions 🤑🤮
@Czar_Khastik
Fantastic idea. It should be called
Hogwarts Legacy: Kill Harry Potter
Looking forward to it. I felt really cool slinging spells and juggling dark wizards lol. I really hope at some point we get to visit other wizarding schools.
It is still one of my favourite ps5 games..looks brilliant and the audio was brilliant. Yeah it was a bit full of the merlin trials and the field note collections were a bit tedious but it was my chill out game. Nothing too taxing and was a very nice after work distraction. Roll on the 2nd game and let's hope certain aspects of today's society manage to keep their hatred under control this time round.
Loved every second of the first one. If the sequel will be half as good, im stoked!
Listen to player feedback and improve on the weaknesses. It's hard to go wrong, WB, if you focus on the game first.
@Paulbuck28 @riceNpea @Rob_230
The haunted shop mission "minding your own business" was a PS exclusive.
DLC - There was a Dark Arts pack (which was very fairly priced if i remember, and included in the deluxe version) which contained a few cosmetics, 2 animal mounts that could also be used in vivariums (though I think these were also more widely available and the hippogriff certainly is now), and most prominently the Dark arts battle arena. This enables you to do an arena battle fairly early on using all 3 Curses (Crucio, Imperio, Avada Kedavra), in their basic forms, way before you get chance to unlock. It does not unlock the spells early, and you can only use the spells in the arena until you unlock them normally - The way your character behaves, its like the arena acts as some sort of vision. The arena is located in the southern tip of the forbidden forest.
Other than that there were a few cosmetics that were available for following Twitch streams or the like (im not social media minded), but some(/all) of these have now been added in for everyone, and a few cosmetics if you linked a Fan club account.
The house specific missions (1 per house) were not dlc, but were locked to the house you chose, and take place as part of the main story.
@riceNpea if this works its a star before and after the word.
As long as it's not live service crap, I'm all for it.
Only release it physically if it has more then a launcher.
I’d like to see an approval system for your character among fellow students and more of a feeling of competition between the houses over the school year, even if that doesn’t include quidditch. Also, I deliberately avoided learning the unforgivable curses in the hope that the game would reward me for doing so, but it seems there was no penalty for using them.
Yes, it is one of those games that HAD to have DLC's. They have huge potential and the sales proved that.
@Czar_Khastik Maybe they could call it Hogwarts legacy 2: The demise of Concord 😂
No micro Ts = No buy
One of my favorite games this generation. Can't wait for the sequel!
Not interested if live service.
@Czar_Khastik Hopefully we can play as Harry Potter but with guns!!!
If WB Games sees all these comments about wanting it to be Live Service, they aren’t gonna realize it’s sarcasm, are they
