There was drama among gaming enthusiasts this weekend when a paywalled Digital Foundry analysis of some early PS5 Pro footage attached some lower than expected resolutions to titles like Alan Wake 2. We’re going to refrain from sharing the information here, primarily because it’s not publicly available – and also because we feel it’s lacking context.
However, the subsequent headlines and forum posts prompted Remedy’s head of communications Thomas Puha to comment: “Remedy’s games and resolution discussion pops up every once in a while,” he wrote on ResetEra. “Image quality matters more than resolution, not that I’m confirming anything. We'll drop some details on the PS5 Pro version of Alan Wake 2 in the coming weeks with some assets too. I think the version will be a pleasant surprise, but hard to tell these days.”
One of the tentpole features of the PS5 Pro is its inclusion of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (or PSSR), a proprietary technology similar to Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (or DLSS) which utilises AI to reconstruct an image from a lower resolution. This effectively enables lower internal resolutions to be upscaled to a higher resolution, with very little artefacting or inaccuracies.
What this means is that developers can use more computational power on things like physics and lighting, because they can render their games at a lower resolution and rely on the upscaler to deliver a clean 4K image. We’ll obviously need more real-world examples of PSSR in action before we can comment on its quality, but this may be the reason you could see some lower than expected resolutions attached to the PS5 Pro versions of games.

Waiting for the PS5 Pro to start a NG+ for this game and Spider-Man 2.
I’m really excited to play this game on the Pro! I’ve been holding off specifically for the Pro release, just like I do with Rebirth. I can’t wait to dive into these games!
Got it on PC so I don't need to spend an extra 800+ to get it to look good because it looks good already.
I was going to start the game once I beat WuKong but I'll gladly wait another month or so and play it on the PS5 Pro
The more interesting thing for me was DD2 supposedly running at 60fps. It will be interesting to see if that's stable/locked, I'm expecting drops of some kind.
I always choose performance mode cause when having a really good tv the drawbacks are minimal. So before investing in a ps5 pro do you have a great TV?
I run this at max RT settings on my PC and it looks stunning and whilst that is beyond what the Pro will be capable of, it should at least get the RT reflections which can look amazing in this
Pleasant surprise it may be, but defo not an 800-quid one.
The more I hear about the pro ..the more it just seems like blatant common sense to wait for the ps6
@BossBE I’ve just hit chapter 12 on rebirth at 180 hours. It’s soo damn good and the graphics pah it looks great trust me. The Pro version is obvs going to be a lot better though
@CrashBandicoat same the two FF Games and AW2 are the only games I've played in Quality mode since getting the PS5. God awful performance modes. I saw people saying Ff7 Rebirth didn't look that bad on PS5 when SE literally apologized for the poor work.
@breakneck I use a 50inch LG LCD and it looks fantastic I think. Would not be possible on the PS4 Pro or older tech if you get me
@Mikey856 I agree. I though AW2 looked great in 30frames but I found 60fps to be too grainy to to be playable.

@KillerBoy As you definitely know more about game development than the folks who actually work on the game buddy, the price of PS5 Pro is ridiculous but let’s not be so naive and frankly idiotic over undermining the upgrades the console offers.
Now whether it’s a £700 upgrade is up to you, but stop being an armchair dev, it’s cringe.
Let the shilling begin! Hope they’re at least getting paid, would be embarrassing if they were doing it for free.
@nessisonett Developers shilling? Or do you mean the price defenders 😭
@DonJorginho Haha, the glazers will do it for free no bother, it’s the devs who’ll all of a sudden start coming forward after the massive backlash to the price that are a bit whiffy. Geoff’s currently getting annihilated by Hard Drive over his obvious bought-and-paid-for PS5 Pro tweets, it’s not a stretch that they’d be wanting devs to defend it too.
@nessisonett I saw the “wrap it up” tweet from them, hilarious stuff lmao
Fans will always be fans and defend it, but I don’t think any developer (who isn’t an smaller developer trying to garner support for their projects from such fans) is gonna actually defend something, or if they do, do it without reason.
It’s funny as some titles look better where as others look a bit meh, but I’ll happily wait to see more seeing as the unit itself is still a few months out more or less.
PC players could have set the record straight but they seem to be feigning ignorance.
When a PC player says I'm 1440p with dlss they are actually 960p upscaled to 1440p. Balanced though what Nvidia recommends is actually only 835p so pssr does the rest similar to dlss.
Never played AW 2 but really enjoyed one.
Once I get my PS5 Pro it maybe time to jump in.
Can we all agree, right here and now, that PSSR is pronounced "Pissr"?
The game is gorgeous even on the base ps5. Must be double gorgeous on PRO. Just played the night springs dlc. Short but so fun especially Jesse Faden and Sheriff Breaker part. Rose part is silly,goofy and hilarious. So excited for Control 2
" I think the version will be a pleasant surprise, but hard to tell these days.”
They clearly don't understand entitled gamers and neither do I.
They have clearly read sites like Push, where people are just here to throw stones - at anything. I'm sure what they have to show will go down well with those of us who still enjoy gaming and understand its development, but will also be weaponised by those who want to feel that they are on the end of some kind of injustice.
I'm looking forward to real details starting to emerge, and I hope to play AW2 on the pro.
@OldGamer999 you gonna like it. One of my fav game this year. I just love the lore/remedy universe connection between Control/AW.
@breakneck i have zero issue about frame rate on performance mode. Play the game from start via performance instead of quality. And graphics look great even on performance
Will be very interesting to see what these PS5 Pro enhancements are going to be and if how much better than PS5 or Series X.
Waiting to see what AC shadows enhancements are.
I hoping for native 4K 60fps and top visual stuff, but I’m not sure.
Looking forward to finding out
I saw a post of the actual numbers, and if that's the resolution the console can handle at 60fps for Alan Wake 2, that's really disappointing. It's like playing the game with vaseline covering the screen.
Really curious to see if these numbers hold up or not
@Medic_alert
Probably the best most sharp looking games I have played are native 4K, upscaling is ok but also depends on the base resolution and type of upscaling used.
Look at SW outlaws, it’s terrible really when on full screen upscaled from 1080p at 60fps.
Avatar is another one, playing at 60fps the panning around at average speed is a total upscaled blurry mess. Low resolution upscaled to much.
But it’s has some rubbish sort of ray tracing.
They are chasing the wrong things.
@Medic_alert
Well let’s what it all looks like on my tv when it all arrives.
@Medic_alert
I’m in no doubt a top AAA NEW Sony exclusive will look the best.
Is resolution not a part of image quality or am I missing something?
I don't think anyone will really care. This game didn't even make back it's budget....
So it will be a totally differant game. One where I get to play as Alan hopefully?
The differences will be stunning at a 3x magnification!
