Only a few things in life are guaranteed: death, taxes, and Call of Duty's endless popularity. However, you should never bet against anime, either — and it seems the weebs are coming out in force to support Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero on PS5.
The next entry in the Budokai Tenkaichi series in all but name, Sparking! Zero is a hotly anticipated brawler that lets you play as hundreds of characters and blast away opponents with explosive attacks. It's set for release this October.
Of course, Dragon Ball is a massively popular anime and manga in itself, and it seems this game is resonating with fans; it's currently outdoing the imminent Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 in terms of pre-orders on the PS Store.
In the US, all three digital editions of Sparking! Zero are above Black Ops 6 when sorted by best selling, as pointed out by DrLove on X. We've double-checked, and this still holds true at the time of writing:
In the UK PS Store, Sparking! Zero's Ultimate Edition is currently the top pre-order, while the standard edition is below both versions of Black Ops 6. A little more mixed, then, but it's still giving Activision's FPS series a run for its money.

We've played Sparking! Zero a couple of times in the lead-up to launch, with accounts from two Push Square editors you can read here:

Funny enough i pre-ordered it myself today.
Thank god. I preordered it too. I hope Sparking Zero is the best Dragon Ball game in years and I hope it outsells CoD longterm too (including any additional GP subs).
Why do people pre order digital games?
Sparking will be huge but bo6 will pick up later
@Shad361 Yeah, like it's obvious people buy games a week or so before release. This is proof of that. I do that too. Nothing new here.
Could be the game pass effect. I think this year cod numbers are going to be way lower with it being given out on game pass for PC and Xbox. Curious to see how it effects PlayStation sales.
It took a new Budokai Tenkaichi to dethrone CoD.
Never thought I would see the day.
@Ribbitsneed I've never gone to buy a physical game at launch and found it had sold out everywhere. People don't typically preorder for that reason. Normally it's for whatever bonuses you get and, at least in my case and the case of people I know, just to get the spending out the way so you know where you stand with your money. It's not like the price is going to drop at launch.
Also, lastly, you can play digital games at midnight, the very second it becomes launch day, and usually you can install the game in advance for that reason - but of course, only if you've bought it already. You could pointlessly resist preordering and only pay once it's actually launch day, but then you have to wait for it to download and install. Long story short, you lose nothing and gain various things.
Well if anything managed to beat CoD, I’m glad it’s Dragon Ball of all things. Something just feels satisfying about seeing it selling more at the moment.
You have to admire the staying power of this franchise. I watched Z as a kid, and I played the DBZ Kakarot game a few years back, it was alright but fighting games are not really my thing. To be honest anything topping Call of Duty makes me happy, even if it's not for me we need the diversity.
Nostalgia factor is a powerful thing.
As a recently retired COD gamer, I can’t wait to play Sparking Zero instead!!
I get the feeling this game will fall victim to more localizer drama.
@DennisReynolds have fun. Ended up missing out due to budgetary constraints (can’t buy more than one new game per month and I already settled on shadow).
Will probably pick it at some point though!
@Matroska if your account is set to New Zealand (at least on xbox) it is also possible to get digital games even earlier (you don’t even need to commit, you can switch back to your preferred region any time). This is fun for me to do cuz xbox doesn’t have my region (Kuwait) as a selectable option which is lame so I recently committed to just being NZ cuz why not.
Definitely feeling the hype for this one. Just a little over a week to go.
