The gaming industry’s greatest leaker, the Taiwan ratings board, has outed another unannounced title. This time it’s an adaptation of the wildly popular Death Note manga, which had a hugely successful run in Shonen Jump between 2003 and 2006. It was later adapted into an anime.
The game, published by Bandai Namco, will release on PS5 and PS4 – but no further information about it is known right now. Gematsu hypothesises that it could be named Death Note: Killer Within, as Shueisha – the manga’s original publisher – registered that trademark earlier in the year.
Konami did adapt Death Note into a series of titles on the Nintendo DS, but they were never localised and subsequently didn’t release overseas.
It’ll be interesting to see what Bandai Namco’s come up with here; titles like Spy x Anya: Operation Memories have shown it getting a little more experimental with its licensed anime content of late, so let’s hope it’s cooking something similarly suitable in this instance as well.

A visual novel perhaps?
I can't think it's an action game or fighting game lol
Adapting manga to the PS5.
Use the touchpad to swipe through pages.
Eyes flash red
Just according to keikaku.
Watch them turn Death Note into yet another arena brawler somehow. I would laugh so damn hard.
Not sure what kind of game can be made.
A new story with a visual novel? That's what was done with Psycho pass.
Death note is not an action series. So besides a graphic novel or a puzzle game, it doesn't really suit itself well for gaming.
A top 5 manga series right here. Will be interesting to see how this turns out. Always wanted to play the DS games of Death Note, but those never saw a release outside of Japan I think.
@Gaia093 Arena fighter where the goal is to stay away from your opponent long enough to write their name in the Death Note.
Something-something-something potato chip.
...AND EAT IT!!!
Curious to know what kind of game it will be.
There's Death Note games on the DS, so I would wager it could be a remake of those.
I could see it making for a decent visual novel, hard to picture anything else.
@Haruki_NLI Impossible Platinum because nobody makes it through the 30 chapters of filler the anime condensed down into a single episode.
If it's just a VN I hope it's a little more gameplay oriented like AI the somnium files, danganronpa, ace attorney, etc. Which im guessing those DS games are kinda already like. That would be really cool
@Gaia093 I mean they couldn't even get him to be playable in the only fighting game that made a sliver of sense to do so: jump force 🤣
This screams GaaS hero shooter type game! Give me what I want!
I honestly can't think of any other way for this to work as a game other than maybe a visual novel (akin to an Ace Attorney or a puzzle game like the Layton series)
Hope it's better than the movie!
It could be a good JRPG, however how do you deal with the fact that everybody already knows the ending?
Sign me up!
Oh no what's this pain in my chest....
Anime arena fighter let's gooooooooooo
Kart Racer Confirmed! Mario Kart but instead of banana skins and shells you pick up ink and paper. A clever control scheme means you have to race as you write players names, the left stick is your steering, the right your pen strokes. If they pass you before you write their name, you die.
I'm curious what the gameplay would even be, maybe an Ace Attorney style investigation game where you play as L instead of Light himself? Would be a very interesting angle for an adaptation since you technically play as the antagonist of the story.
I'm not super interested in revisiting Death Note, it's good but never really grabbed me as much as it obviously did others, but I'm kind of intrigued by just the concept of having a game of it.
@Dom_31 That’s exactly what I was thinking. It would probably be the most interesting choice I think. Someone new finds the Death Note, and you as L has to investigate the murders or something.
Death Note is the only manga that I've ever watched, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Would be interested to see what they do with the series...
Death Note is a masterpiece.
@PuppetMaster I wouldn't put it past Bamco.
I am actually surprised Death Note still carries weight.
Could the gameplay be something like Heavy Rain or the Dark Pictures Anthology? I like that style of game.
@Haruki_NLI I’m actually wondering why they don’t do that. Not for this adaptation, but as a way to release the medium in general. Nintendo Switch isn’t using its full potential for that either.
