Konami is currently developing Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, a remake of the beloved PS2 stealth action title. While many aspects are true to the original, players can opt for a modern, over-the-shoulder camera — but doing so will affect the level of challenge.
Speaking to Famitsu, Yuji Korekado explains that the remake has two options for camera perspective. 'New Style' puts the game in that modern third-person view we're all accustomed to, while the 'Legacy Style' retains the original game's more zoomed out approach.
Depending on which of these you choose, the difficulty level will be affected.
"We had originally planned to make it possible to switch between the two viewpoints at any time during gameplay, but we decided against it," Korekado says, explaining that the difficulty level "changes drastically depending on the viewpoint".
Korekado continues: "The 'New Style' has a wider linear field of view, and you can shoot your gun while moving Snake, so the difficulty level was lower than we had expected. However, if we adjusted it to match the 'New Style', the 'Legacy Style' would become too difficult. So we decided to split the play style in two."
In the end, Delta's Legacy Style camera is "close" to the difficulty of the original game, and the New Style is being balanced "from scratch".
It makes sense; if the older style camera gives you a broader view of your surroundings, it stands to reason that would make things easier for the player.

I mean that makes sense really. I really hope if this game sells well, then maybe Konami could do remakes of MGS1&2. OR try and make a brand new MGS, to redeem themselves from the god awful Metal Gear survive!
This makes complete sense, as anyone who played MGS: Twin Snakes knows and how first person completely trivialised the game
Seems like an elegant solution. Looking forward to this.
Why would older style camera be easier? Is the camera still fixed like snake eater was or you can move it like subsistence? I found subsistence far easier than snake eater.
I mean zoomed out 3rd person or isometric are always kinda cheating enemies, you see everything ahead and around you. Over the shoulder 3rd person - you have no sideview to look behind but you also cheat taking cover but still see enemies without peeping. 1st person might be the closest to realism albeit you still can't look behind as quick as irl. But all games can't be 1st else there's no viewing your hard-earned beautiful outfits.😄
Am I reading this wrong, or is the conclusion of the article the opposite of what Konami said? Konami is saying the new style made the game too easy, the article concludes that the old style camera gives you a better view and thus makes things easier.
I think difficulty doesn't even matter in stealth games because the focus is to never be spotted and to stay out of combat.
My god that OG camera angle made the game so much more difficult because you couldn't see too far ahead of you and enemies could spot you off-screen 🫠 Instant alarm!
it's a bit of an odd thing to say considering the Subsistance version of MGS3 let's you change the perspective at any time but whatever
Learning their lesson from The Twin Snakes is a very good sign actually.
Thats fine by me.metal gear games arent recognized by theyre difficulties.so its all good.word up son
European Extreme difficulty is if you choose to turn off the screen
Good for 2 playthrough's and a third for ng+ if it's added of course?
Who cares lol, they just need to give a release date already
@Czar_Khastik I'm going to try that difficulty!
@HarmanSmith Finally a man of culture and taste
So is it still going to have Kojima's wide variety of difficulty settings from the start menu? If not, I'm out.
@Oram77 They don't seem to be able to make anything at all that isn't a remake at this point. I'm not sure how anyone would expect them to craft a quality sequel to MGS of all things, one of the greatest series of all time, without the vision of the director who was responsible for the entire series.
@Czar_Khastik screen off and dualsense has to be used in a different room!
@Zemo55 But of course, the dualsense must be registered as Player 2 for all the known reasons
@Johnny_Ace I think he messed up that part. I read that too and was like you have it backwards hahah
This might be one of the few games I will purchase at list price, MGS 3 is just that good.
