Sony’s released a new PS5 commercial which boldly declares the best time to get a console is now. The ad – which covers the whole brand but hinges heavily on first-party giga-seller Helldivers 2 – touches upon topics such as PS Portal, customisable covers (which won’t fit PS5 Pro), and the various accessories available for the console.
In our opinion, it’s a little odd how this commercial exists to illustrate why you should buy the console, but instead goes on to promote the dozens of optional peripherals you can purchase alongside it instead.
To be fair, while the YouTube comments are absolutely bursting with people bemoaning a lack of software, it’s been a huge year for games on PlayStation. While not everything available has been an out-and-out exclusive – that’s just a sign of the times, folks – there’s been no shortage of things to play between the likes of Astro Bot, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Silent Hill 2, and Metaphor ReFantazio.
So we do agree, there’s never been a better time to buy a PS5 – it’s just a shame the global economic environment has made it virtually impossible to bring the price of the actual box down.
Do you think it's a good time to get a PS5? (1,330 votes)
- Yes, the software catalogue is huge
- Maybe, it depends what you're after
- No, other consoles are better options
- I think PC is a better choice than consoles
- I don't know and don't care

I mean PS5 has the largest and most impressive catalogue of great games of any console ever. Partly because it has so many generations of amazing games playable on it
The best time to buy it, insanely, was at launch when it was cheapest and had the highest hopes of quality and quantity software.
Instead, because it's just the world we live in now, it's more expensive to buy NOW and the software illusion isn't holding.
Though if you bought it at launch you'd have bought the original headset that doesn't support PlayStations new proprietary connection on the newer more expensive version that only two devices known to man seem to use, your optional disc drives and cover plates that don't work on a £700 system because the notches are in a different place simply to sell more.
But on the other hand, late stage capitalism baybeeeeee
I think there has never been a better time to buy a PS4. Cheap as chips, plays 90% of what is on PS5, and has several features that its younger brother does not.
"it’s a little odd how this commercial exists to illustrate why you should buy the console, but instead goes on to promote the dozens of optional peripherals you can purchase alongside it instead."
Peripherals is where the real money is, that's why consoles used to be loss- leaders at best.
This has been the best year of gaming since 2020 in my opinion. Sorry to those who can't enjoy the amount of bangers we've received this year.
Who needs a PS5 for Fortnite, FC and CoD Blops 6?
I'm hoping the PS5 slim gets a discount during Black Friday,
@Jayslow Any year that has Concord in it AKA one of the biggest failures since ET for the Atari cannot claim to be any kind of ''best year in gaming''.
4 years after launch is now is the time to buy it…lol
@LifeGirl why? I didn't play Concord like most people. It has zero effect on all the games people CAN play which was the whole point of the article. I love me a good Concord dunk but this was a reach.
I got mine about 4 weeks ago and there lots of decent PS5 games to play now.
I agree with Sony 👍
Cringey ad, but I actually did just pick up a PS5 slim during that $50 off sale earlier this month.
@Jayslow Because - and this is key - it is the biggest failure of all time. ''The Greatest year in gaming since 2020 - which also contains the worst game ever made by the hand of man'' is a pretty big asterix next to your claim.
Oh, and I also forgot to mention, ''contains Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League'' in my earlier comment.
With what bundled in? Live service garbage or Horizon remaster who’s the master? For £60.
I’ve always been Sony since day 1 but this gen is a joke.
Actions speak louder than words. If Sony wants to demonstrate that now is the best time to buy a PS5, they have to show off an impressive slate of upcoming software.
I don't entirely mind the more peace-meal approach they've taken to announcing their games, but it doesn't scream 'Big things around the corner' in the same way their large, announcement-stuffed showcases of the PS4 era did.
If you are new to PS5 then yes there is a good back catalogue of games.
Also in the UK there is £50 of the rrp at the minute.
@AK4tywill 100% it’s a trick with a maybe treat. I love Sony but it’s the worst gen ever and the brand feels cold, stale. Just fleecing customers for remasters and £800 mid console. Mid being the word.
That’s was an extremely age demographic advert that was.
@Ravix Xbox ain’t doing ads Chief
100% true.
The amount of games releasing every week is staggering and with the amount of experiences from 1st, 2nd and 3rd parties, you’d be dumb not to own one.
I would agree with if they would let me cash out my points. For now I disagree as a sign of protest. Ps stars still don't have the store credit options.

Not for me. The backlog will never die. Most games are cross-gen and modern AAA single-player games feel more and more boring. I'll wait a few more years.
At the rate gaming is going, buy a PC now and it'll play everything you want for decades until the traces oxidize and crumble. It won't play the latest games at the highest spec, but those games will also have potato mode support.
Wait, Sony just put out a "BUY A PS5 CONSOLE RIGHT NOW!!" ad and didn't mention the Pro? But why? 🤷♂️
Also, this is more of a Helldivers II ad than a PS5 ad, just sayin'.
@Haruki_NLI " late stage capitalism "
My problem w/ that phrase is that most people are probably reading it like it's a good thing, like it's morphed into a butterfly, greed is good, and not how it was originally intended. Though I suppose some people read my "the class was is over" comment the same way. Which is why I always end it, "we lost". 🤑
@NEStalgia " In our opinion, it’s a little odd how this commercial exists to illustrate why you should buy the console, but instead goes on to promote the dozens of optional peripherals you can purchase alongside it instead. "
Sammy's been reading my 4th party comments.😎 Ain't nobody calling it what you said. 😉
Yes, but not for the only 'yes' reason in the poll.
The money has been taken out my account for the PRO today. It’s on!
They are right, there's now quite a lot of decent games and ps5 exclusives as well such as Final Fantasy 7 ReBirth, Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, Dragon Age Veilguard, Astro Bot, Returnal, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, HellDivers 2, Dragons Dogma 2, Silent Hill 2 all not available on PS4, and of course next year there's Monster Hunter Wilds, Death Stranding 2, GTA 6, Ghost of Yotei, Assassins Creed Shadows etc that are skipping the PS4.
So yeah more than enough reasons to finally get a PS5 for those who haven't yet.
@Ravix 😉 for you BabeStation.
I’m not anti Sony. I love PlayStation. Sometimes a friend of the family needs to tell the truth though. This gen is a joke. Upscaled PS4 gen and that’s the truth.
I’m not saying there aren’t hits but what is the vision? PS5 Pro ain’t it chief. That Mark geezer was David Brent without the gravitas.
Ditch the live service garbage. Make games people care about.
@Jayslow Fully agree, across the PS5 and Switch I don't think I've enjoyed a year as much as this one and there's still some bangers to come like Dragon Quest 3 HD, Lego Horizon, Mario and Luigi Brothership and Fairy Tail 2. Although that might be biased for me as I mainly play JRPG's and this year has been stacked for great JRPG's.
Ps5 is my least played console ever. Make of that what you will. It’s 95% a twitch machine.
Best time to get it was at launch where it was a much better value for $500. You’re paying that for 4 year old hardware now
A stripped rewards program for both PS Stars and Credit holders, lack of great first party exclusives, and a live service push that failed spectacularly.
Yeah, I'm gonna disagree with that one, Sony.
I’d rather get a PS4 and even looked into it a little. The only things that I’m really wanting to try on PS5 that I haven’t played with my brother are Stellar Blade and Infinity Nikki. Aside from those, nothing has really grabbed my attention compared to the numerous releases on PS4…But that’s just me.
I still feel that if I'd not upgraded to a PS5, the only games I would have missed out on are Astro's Playroom and Astro Bot
Hmmm just before the Pro launch and a month before Black Friday is definitely not the best time to buy a PS5
Just picked up a PS5, first PS since the PS2. £340 and loads of first party games to catch up on. Good time for me to buy a PS!
Still doesn't have any exclusive that interests me.
Mind you, nor does Xbox or Nintendo, but maybe that's just me.
Yeah, absolutely not. This generation is the worst one Sony has ever had in terms of output to some degree, but more importantly in terms of fan service and greed driven anti consumer policy. Had I known this was going to be their way, I would have never jumped in day one, nor now.
This is shaping up to be an entirely skippable one, as the majority of the Ps5 native ps studios stuff won't even drop until the end of the generation if it is even native (Ghost of Yotei looks like a Ps4 game). By that time just wait and play it on the ps6 where it will run better or have 2 remakes. By then.
Not to mention you have nearly all of the major third party releases in the last 18 months intentionally releasing unfinished/unoptomized titles in order to help sell a minor and over priced mid gen refresh or at the very least use it as a crutch and manner to essentially have two releases for the same game in a way.
It's the worst time to get a ps5 because now we can see the writing on the wall. I would caution anyone on doing so. At this point play your back catalogue or the majority of current Gen games that are in actuality better running ps4 games, and wait for ps6 or save for a pc.
why is it a good time to buy exactly?
has the price dropped yet? no.
has there been a "system seller calibur game" released? debatable but in my opinion, no.
are things looking bright over the next few months with hotly anticipated releases? no. we don't even know what projects most of sony's 1st party studios are working on, let alone what the potential release YEAR will be for them. we do know that they have a bunch of service games in active development that will likely bomb just as hard as concord though!
the only exception to all of this may be gta 6 but that isn't even a ps5 exclusive and is likely a year away from release
things are rough for sony right now and they have little to no bullet points to entice potential customers to get a ps5 who may be on the fence and/or not impressed with how the first 4 years have gone for the platform. i would know, i'm one such potential customer. had a great time with the ps4 since 2014 and see no reason to throw it by the wayside anytime soon. this is probably the point of no return and i should save my money and invest it into the ps6 instead (if it can deliver what the ps5 couldn't)
The best time to get a console is when you can actually afford it. 🤔
I'm just waiting for GTA 6.
In breaking news, company says now is the best time to buy company's product.
The games aren't the problem, Sony's arrogance is.
I bought a PS5 since 2020, 1 month after launch.
Gave it to my son this year, and didn't feel the need get another.
The first party games I was playing on it are already on PC, or I've played them too much to get into them again.
And first party titles are the main reason I bought at least 1 Playstation console of each generation since way back in 2006 (PS2 slim, PS3 phat, PSP slim, PS4 Pro, PS5). Hell, I still have the PS3 and PS4 Pro, and they still work.
But the way things went with PS5 since launch, getting the next gen is under serious question.
If Sony doesn't make some much needed additions to it's first party portfolio, most likely I'll be skipping the PS6.
Ask me again when they stop releasing games for Ps4
Has been a good year for me for sure - stellar blade, FF7 Rebirth, Unicorn Overlord, Astrobot etc.
The PS5 and switch give me way more than I have time for.
If you’re looking for platform-wide standardization of what is and what is not acceptable trophy criteria, along with the ability to permanently erase games with partially completed trophies from your trophy list, as well as the option to do something as simple as sort them alphabetically instead of the terrible ‘last game you earned a trophy in gets bumped to the top of the list’ method…now is not a good time to get a PlayStation.
Not really as a life long fan personally I feel ripped off this is Playstation's most pathetic generation yet
I mean there definitely isn't a lack of new games, and I never struggle finding something good to play.
But I understand why people are saying lack of software, and I think that's because Sony still hasn't released that killer app for PS5, the must play, must own game. The biggest titles they've released on PS5 have been cross-gen, and on reflection Spider-man 2 was a little disappointing, I still haven't seen anything on the technical level TLOU Part II was, which released over 4 years ago. The fact Sony is keeping their cards close to their chest doesn't help things, as there is not much to look forward to from them in the next year or 2
Nah, when it's cheap years later maybe. This has been my least used Playstation next to the PS3. Not much excites me on it, and most of what's good can be played elsewhere too, so no need for a PS5 to play em.
Maybe if they'd actually brought the price down instead of increasing it would be 🤣😭 got Xbox but thought when they drop abit in price il grab one so can play the the ratchet n clank games but then the pirce went up like wtf 🤣😭😭
Definitely the last choice 😂
Japanese consumers looking at the latest price hike likely disagree.
@LifeGirl biggest failure yes but the worst game of all time? You have seen that pink woman with a gun game yes? Concord is a massive failure granted but there are literally hundreds of worse games out there.
Wow! Now that is a surprising result based strictly on the usual negativity on this website.
72% of people agree or slightly agree that now is the best time. Wow!
So many unhappy ps5 owners. Why don't you all sell them or donate them to people that actually want one but can't afford one etc. It's not sonys worst console generation but it's definitely got the worst community I've seen in a long time.
Yeah I feel a little like I wasted the first 3 years of PS5 on PS4 games. I like my PS5 but I loved my PS4, 3, 2 & Vita. By the end of the gen I'm sure I'll fall back in love but this gen seems more appealing for those who've waited until this point. Also, the PS5 Pro is what the PS5 should've been. I'm getting that day 1.
And here comes the ps5 pro.or wait to buy a ps5 pro instead of a ps5.more PlayStation exclusives sony.word up son
@riceNpea I mean, just talking about recent-ish releases but you can’t play Astro bot, Stellar Blade, Baldur’s Gate 3 or FFVII Rebirth. I am sorry but PS4 is utterly useless atm @Dr_Rocanlover
@Northern_munkey Well said sir, entitlement and internet arrogance certainly has played its part in this generation.
@Northern_munkey Just out of interest what do you think was sonys worst gen? I have to agree with others that this has been by far the worst, there's new hardware releasing next week and i haven't got the slightest bit of interest in it despite being day 1 for everything since ps1 (apart from psvr2, they really s*it the bed on that one )
@Nei As long as you can still play games on it, no system I’d ever really worthless. Not everyone wants to play the newest releases. Hell, I’m looking to get a PS1 this weekend.
Any time is good to buy gaming hardware. With PS5 I have so many games in my library I’m covered till PS6 arrives at least. That said, PS5 Pro is still readily available for pre-order everywhere over here in Poland and I suspect it’s not going to sell nearly as well as Sony is hoping.
Now is the best time for you to buy a PS5.
For Sony, as they need to fill in a $300m black hole in their finances.
In fact, you should buy 4.
@Deljo for me the ps3 was the biggest disappointment personally. It was a powerful machine but was notoriously difficult to get to grips with. The games had some of the worst performing games I've played (dragons dogma, bayonetta etc) and the only reason I bought one was because the xbox 360 just kept red ring of deathing me. Saying that I did enjoy myself with the uncharted games and kill zone 2 and 3. Ultimately I switched to pc gaming for a few years until I bought a ps4 to play friends online with which is probably sonys best gen so far.
Here is a list of current games that are exclusive on PS5 (excluding PS VR2):
For someone who hasn't bought a PS5 do you seriously think the above list makes it compelling enough to get one now, 4 years on and at practically the same price as launch? Everything else on the platform can be played either on PS4 or PC at much higher fidelity along with Xbox titles from day one.
Not yet worth buying. Would wait for a bigger sale. I probably won't even use it much now. And if I get a PS5, I'd be playing a PS4 game.
@LavenderShroud yeah, I mean - give me a SNES with Super Metroid or whatever can play PSO and I am good for life but in terms of latest meaningful releases the PS4 hasn’t got us covered
Na not for me, just picked up a 4 pro to replace my broken launch ps4. Thanks.
@Northern_munkey thats interesting, for me the ps3 was such a leap forward with the introduction of hd, bluray, a hard drive and even wireless controllers that it was hard not to be impressed and is kinda the blueprint for what we have now. Actually your right, I'm not really enjoying this gen all that much but it was the ps3 that started it all...🤣
@truerbluer you forgot Stellar Blade and others but yes if I had to get one single piece of gaming hardware, I’d say Ps5 is the best choice atm as you pretty much get everything without having to wait years for ports! And I say this as someone who plays on PC a lot -
If anything, now would be a good time to get a PC. You can play all Xbox exclusives and pretty much all PS exclusives after a while as well.
@Nei You're right Stellar Blade is missing, I got the list off Wikipedia but it seems it was removed off the PS5-only list because of the PC port being announced.
PC waiting for ports is kind of a moot point when PS5 will also be waiting for Xbox ports.
This is the worst Playstation generation. While the Xbox brand is arguably irrelevant - the Playstation 5 still absolutely blows. Compared to its predecessors ?
-Overpriced
-Terrible lack of exclusives
-Terrible lack of original new IPs
-Exclusives releasing on PC making it even harder for me to use my console more
-Driftsense battery eater
-Mediocre UI
-Least impressive generational leap
-Online is still paywalled & more costly
The PS5 is the least Playstation feeling Playstation i’ve ever owned. $ony lost its identity imo.
1.PS3
2.PS2/PS4
3.PS1
4. A trash can
5. PS5
Now would be the best time... to just stick with your PS4.
@Nei That’s true. I definitely agree with you
This highlights perfectly how disappointing this generation has been…
@Deljo The PS3 was legendary , we really had it good that generation; the PS3 & Xbox360 were both amazing consoles that pioneered gaming so much - the libraries were insane , the games were insane, the innovation & online were insane, new experiences & new IPs galore . Rockstar released like FIVE games or more that generation, COD was at its peak , there was so many genres and types of games for everyone & the birth of indies .
i could go on man, it was so good. so many games today benefit from that era alone .
Also want to add that i’ll never get over how ambitious sony was with the initial (fat) PS3 - despite being expensive , it provided soo much that it puts the ps5 pro to shame. the OG PS3 was a cutting edge freak of technology in 2006
The best time to get a PS5 is at launch and I've never looked back. PS6 launch will also be another great time. Thinking about the whole design of the PS5, this is a console you never want to take away from shelves. It's just so elegantly beautiful standing upright.
@nomither6 have to agree with you, infact I've definitely played more ps3 games this year (through emulation) than I have ps5 games. Says it all really
Returnal, Ratchet and clank and miles morales, gow, are still very expensive.
If you are a gamer , yes its time, But still this generation is not worth it.
The generation has in general been very good, some highs and a few lows, and i wouldn't moan about a lack of games overall, but I would the lack of Sony 1st party exclusives, particularly in the last couple of years.
The generation as a whole has been good, and im looking forwards to Pro, but Sony have not been too impressive at all of late and really need to take a long hard look at what gained them their customers.
@TrickyDicky99
On the whole this gen has been pretty good so far imo, not perfect, but pretty good overall, and I started gaming on the Speccy +2, and have been ever since.
@LifeGirl Such nonsensical logic. Concord existing doesn't negate all the other amazing games being amazing.
Just like how an amazing album can he amazing even if there's one dud track on it.
If Sony exclusively listened to the PS comments then they would be in way more trouble then said commenters would have you believe.
@nomither6 Ironic that you call the PS5 "overpriced", then peg the PS3 as the best PlayStation. That was way more expensive than the PS5 at launch and that's before adjusting for inflation.
And the only reason they got the price down is because they stripped out a load of features.
@UNCLDNS why would they wait for a console that doesn't even exist at all , and we have no idea when its coming out it could be till 2028/2029 when that comes out.
@nomither6 i love my ps3 , but its easy to forget it was the least selling sony console of all time. it was actually the worst console to develop for as 3rd party games went. and people comment how remasters on the ps5 , but ps3 had just as many or more hd collections of ps2 games.
@MrPeanutbutterz true it was expensive but at the time a decent bluray player alone was starting at £500 so it was a bit of a bargin for movie fans.
@twitchtvpat No offense but why would i care about it being the least selling playstation ? & playstation (up until the PS4) has generally had shoddy ports and the PS2 wasn’t exactly easy to develop for either & was the weakest system of its generation. No console has been perfect yet imo , they’ve all had flaws. & the difference between the PS5 remasters vs the PS3 remasters is that the ps3 actually had its own games & own unique library. The ps5 is seeing remasters of games that are still fairly recent & from a console where the leap is minimal, so much so, that you can be better off just playing the same ps4 game on the ps5 instead. The PS3 wasn’t a remaster console, the PS5 is. Not to mention that the PS3 had “remasters” of its portable counterparts with added trophy support, so i think that’s a bonus and convenient.
& from a strictly games standpoint - whether first party or third party , the PS3 smashes the PS5 tremendously.
@MrPeanutbutterz Ill preface by saying that i ignore inflation & hardly understand how it works but - for 2006 & considering how much the original PS3 offered at that time, i believe the PS3 was worth the asking price. The PS5? hell no.
Should have had the advertisement with:- No mortgage? No children? Earning a decent income? Then the best time to buy a PS5 is now. Or spoil yourself with the PS5 Pro!!
At this point, no. I got my PS5 3 years ago and I just cannot recommend it. I have completely stopped buying my games on PlayStation and exclusively purchase games on PC and Switch. Every games that Sony makes goes to PC now, the price has gone up instead of down, and the the lack of portability is the nail in the coffin for me. I just use my PS5 to play my PS4 games when I do turn it on, but the PS5 will be my last Sony console.
Definitely. Great system, great and huge selection.
No point getting a ps5 now. All the games I have been interest on ps5 are all now on PC minus maybe ff17 rebirth, but we know that is coming. The reason I bought a ps5 was ff16(game was ok, but a let down overall) is now on PC.
@nomither6 like i said i loved the ps3 , i still have mine hooked up and play it, but from your comment you act like the ps5 is already done with , but its not even half way over. theres still plenty of great games coming.
Why is this such a bad gen software wise according to so many? So many games have come out these past few years, its almost an accomplishment to not have a backlog by now.
Or do people here only play exclusives?
In that case, this year Playstation has 9 exclusives. Is that really so bad?
Or is it that you only play first party games?
The way i see it, there have been games coming out yearly in a staggering pace, that i can hardly keep up with. My backlog is immense, i cannot play all these games that are coming out. It seems like there are hundreds of games coming out each year.
I guess you guys either have way more free time than me and can play all these games. Or y’all standards are super high in what ure looking for in gaming.
If you have anything like Black Friday that would be the best time!. Its also the best time to pick up physical games on deep discount.
To follow up on my post. This is just a few of the games that came out this year, or are still gonna come out. In no way is this a comprehensive list, just a glimpse of what a typical year in gaming delivers
Astro bot
Elden ring shadow of the erdtree
Metaphor refantazio
Final fantasy rebirth
Dave the diver
Destiny the final shape
Balatro
Last of us 2 extra mode
Tekken 8
Like a dragon
Animal well
Hi fi rush
Unicorn overlord
Prince of persia the lost crown
Silent hill 2
Dragons dogma 2
Call of duty black ops 6
Thank goodness youre here
Dragon age: the veilguard
Neva
Helldivers 2
Rise of the ronin
Stellar blade
Ultros
Pacific drive
Granblue fantasy relink
Zenless zone zero
Sea of thieves
Mlb the show
Fc 25
F1
NBA 2k
Slitterhead
Lego horizons adventure
Obviously theres so much more, but these are the more notable ones. Thats almost 3 games coming out each month. Some critically acclaimed. Both from existing franchises and new ip. From all types of genres and from AAA to indie. Some of these take 50+ hrs to complete.
Really, i cant find the time, i automatically have a backlog. And that is just this year. I still have a backlog from the last 3 years. It seems to me that whatever console you have, but in this case if you have a PS5, you're eating good. So how does it suck?
Baldur's Gate 3 was out last year so unless you own a PC then its been worth owning a PS5 for at least a year.
@Northern_munkey as observations go, this one is 100% spot on. Who would have thought as technology improves, people become more miserable and entitled. Maybe that's the real Moore's Law.
Actually it's the worst time to get a new console. Nintendo will likely launch a console in 2025 and both Sony and Microsoft will release new consoles in a two or three years so it almost better to wait until the next generation arrives. Even with the minor improvements for the ps5 pro, most gamers are better off waiting for the ps6.
Sony says and we obey without asking why
@LogicStrikesAgain Right, but literally only two of these games are exclusive to the PS5, and they'll probably go to PC next year.
Yes, of course.
I bought PS5 Fat model in 1 June 2024 and I love to play a lot of cute 3rd party PS4 / PS5 kids games on my PS5 machine. ☺
Dont get me wrong, im glad i got a PS5 but with the way things havecplayed out with PS4 support this far in to the gen etc i will certainly contemplate not getting a 6 until mid gen. I mean, the graphical difference will be even smaller between 5 and 6 than it was between 4 and 5 and im not one who is effected by fps too much and thats where i think sony will concentrate on with PS6.
Not for me, after my launch PS4 broke in the pandemic, I couldn't find a PS5 so replaced it with another PS4 Slim. I really enioyed the PS3 and PS4 and still use my consoles, but I moved over to Switch as my main gaming plaform. I started gaming back with the Atari 2600, but in recent years I've just lost interest in the race for the best graphics and what feels like increasing homogenous big budget game design. I'm going to wait out to see how the Switch successor turns out at this point.
It would be interesting to know what % of regular readers at PS are PS5 owners already. I always suspected about 80%+ and thus the best time was for them months or years ago. About 4 years ago for me.
Assuming that the super long console cycles continue and its another 8 year stint, then yes, if you are not already on board I'd say by all means its a great time to get one. I dont see the PS6 for at least another 3 years and the Xbox is literally dead. So unless you want to play 1990s games on Donttendo go for the PS5.
@TrickyDicky99
Depends what you class as 'last gen' / 'this gen'.
This generation I would say includes all games, including remasters, released since the PS5 released in 2020 (unless there was no native PS5 version at all), and has been prety good overall (Sony hasnt been great these last couple of years, but overall the last few years have been good).
I suppose, if you only included games that Dont have PS4 versions (in addition to PS5 versions), you would only be looking at a small number of games - but this isnt how generations really work any more.
Its highly likely that PS6 will not see a AAA game that isnt also released on PS5, until at least 4 years into its launch, mainly due to the ongoing cost of consoles and game development.
Unlike previous generations I think the PS5 Pro may be the halfway point between 5 and 6, with CPU and AI upgrades taking centre stage when 6 rolls around in 4 years time.
I'd flippantly say the best time was at launch, considering they've only gone up in price since then. Nonetheless, it's pretty clear the PS6 won't be here anytime soon so there's no point hanging on for that instead.
The best time to get a PS5 is when PS6 comes out.
@nomither6 I ignored inflation in that instance too. In pure numerical "this is how much cash I have to hand over at time of purchase" value, the PS3 (for me in Ireland) was €630. The PS5 was €500.
A very simplistic explanation of inflation is your money has less purchasing power today than it did in the past. Basically, you get less for the same amount of money. So when we do take inflation into account, that €630 from March 2007 is the equivalent of €801 today (coincidentally a euro more than the PS5 Pro's RRP).
Aside from OtherOS (which was scrapped), and lots of pointless card readers, what's so different about the PS5 vs. PS3? PS5 is far more reliable, far more quiet, has better back compat with PS4 than the PS3 did with PS2 (and there's also no chance of that being removed), much better online functionality, better controller, better storage, better expansion options, 4K Blu-ray player...
@LogicStrikesAgain Hear hear.
Since I've started reading this website (a few months ago), I've repeatedly asked myself do the users here actually enjoy videogames? Because the comments sections would have you believe they do not.
I consider this gen a tough one for the big two. Lots of games were duds, and the best ones were few and far between.
I feel like the PC-like architecture they went with ended up showing gamers they don’t really need to stick to consoles. Quite a few PS5 games can be downscaled to work on PS4, they just want to keep it on their newest console…as they keep touting that their games are coming to more devices. That doesn’t make sense folks.
@MrPeanutbutterz I know the PS3 had a noteworthy failure rate , but it was no where near as bad as the Xbox360 - Yes, i’ve had one PS3 break on me , but so did my Wii. 7th generation was an ambitious generation all around that had to crawl so that later tech could walk, but with it came new revolutionary experiences. & besides, the slim models pretty much fixed the small failure issue that the OG fat had anyway, and the ps4 is much louder than the ps3! seriously , how aren’t your ears still ringing years later from that jet engine??
& while the PS3 back compat wasn’t perfect , it was still reliable & i’d rather have 3 generations of consoles in 1 system vs only one . Plus, the slim models can play ps1 games natively.
Yes the online is better, but at a cost. a scam at that .
better controller? yes, just revert back to hall effect analog sticks , and do something about the mediocre battery. the touchpad is also still useless but i won’t complain about that . the dualsense is a great controller nonetheless.
better storage? debatable . you can only download a handful of modern games before the ps5 is filled to the brim with HD texture garbage or whatever modern games bloat their sizes with.
4k blu-ray player ? not a fair comparison. the ps3 had a blu-ray player in 2006
the ps3 was way ahead of its time & was more powerful than PCs for a good 2 years. The ps4 released outdated & the ps5 is lukewarm especially if you previously owned a ps4 pro.
that said, i hope the ps5 generation gets extended somehow & gets a long run like the ps2 and ps4 did.
Edit - ok so i looked up the inflation rate, & the ps3 in 2006 was equivalent to damn near $800 . ahhh it pains me to say this but , you’re right , i admit the ps3 was a bit overpriced. i was a kid then so excuse my lack of empathy for that asking price. plus the economy here was terrible in 2008 when the ps3 was still expensive
@B_Lindz True. But what im wondering is why some are saying this gen sucks software wise? Do they only mean in terms of exclusive games? And if so, im just wondering if they do not play and enjoy 3rd party multiplatform games.
There are thousands of games out if you own a PS5, i’d argue we’re spoilt for choice, rather than theres no games.
And even if its pure exclusives people are after, Playstation probably still has the most notable exclusives for their system after Nintendo.
Hard to say really. I prefer the xbox for its interface and gamepass(Which I prefer over PS Premium, though I do have both).
I've had my console since launch and really do go through short spurts. The most ive used my PS5 has been since buying my portal.
That said, I still went for a PS5 Pro(coming on the 7th) and am looking forward to playing more on that.
Short answer here is, it really doesn't matter when you get it. Its more expensive now than at launch, but it has some solid games. There is parity in the market in terms of games, so one could argue its just a good time to buy any console/PC.
I'm glad you mentioned Metaphor: ReFantazio in the article, the game is awesome!
As much as I like PlayStation, I've grown up with all PlayStations including PSP PSP Go and Vita I personally don't think it is a particularly good time to pick up a PlayStation. For a start a lot of games that were once exclusive are now on PC which is a good thing but it doesn't make the PS5 a must have like before as a result, it just means people have more of a choice now.
That's like saying "Get a meager handful of exclusives and a whole lot of PS4 games!!!"
@Haruki_NLI @Haruki_NLI (comment #2)
Exactly this, my comrade!
@Kelrics90 (comment #36) This.
@LogicStrikesAgain
you might be missing the context as to why people are underwhelemed with the ps5. this article is specifically about owning a ps5 and the "value" that it offers, even if you own other consoles such as ps4 or a pc.
1. half of those games listed are also on ps4 and vast majority are on pc and elswhere.
2. half of those games are not taking full advantage of the ps5 hardware as they are cross gen releases and need to cater to lower specs.
3. many of those games are run-of-the-mill sequels with absolutely nothing new to show and are creatively bankrupt in their design. i'd argue that none of those games are impressive enough to sell hardware. there are no "system sellers" to be found. where is the innovation and originality? MAYBE astro bot could be a "system seller" for a very hardcore group of platforming fans, but that's about it.
4. only 3 games on the list are exclusive to the ps5 and two of those (ff rebirth and stellar blade) will soon find their way to pc.
5. true exclusives matter to many people because it incentivizes one to purchase the hardware and brings "value" to the platform. the ps5 is almost completely void of this now and its hurt the perception of the brand.
one more thing i'll note is that in previous console generations, there was more risk taking and NEW ip being developed which made the industry that much more exciting. these days, it's mostly by the numbers and predictable. sony has yet to release a new ip on ps5 outside of returnal?! even astro bot (ps5) is not a new ip as it is based on the groundwork of astro bot rescue mission and astro's playroom.
to sum up my thoughts: this generation has been incredibly uneventful, predictable and expensive so far. not much to celebrate at the moment. hopefully that gives you a better sense of why people are not as excited as you are. that said, the indi scene continues to impress and there is always something worth playing in that space. my rant is mainly focused on the AAA space as we know it.
The admin for this family of sites are such oversensitive pansies! I made a joke that is in no way "inappropriate" at all, it's a JOKE! you know, those things we used to tell and people took it as just that, laughed or didn't and moved on?
@Porco Nope, i just created my own train of thought. Im reacting specifically to people commenting here and other articles that this gen sucks software wise.
I argue this gen has lots of games to play. Most of the games i listed were atleast rated an 85 on metacritic. With some in the 90s. And that is just one year of the current gen. This gen has seen games that rival the best of last gen. Games like Baldurs gate 3 and Elden Ring to name just a few. And we’re still only halfway current gen.
Some of the best games last gen also were sequels in existing franchises, not everything were new ips.
Examples: Tlou2, Red dead 2, Persona 5, God of war, Metal gear 5, Uncharted 4, Monster hunter world, The witcher 3.
Now if people cant enjoy games because they're also available on other consoles, PC or even last gen consoles. Well thats their prerogative. But that leads to a narrow path of fulfilment. And hardly warrants a “this gen has no games” comment.
If your definition of true exclusives means not having any PC ports. That would mean Nintendo is the only one that has true exclusives, still followed by Playstation. Does the PC have any notable games or “system sellers” that are true exclusives to that platform?
Also, i dont get the ‘doesn't take full advantage of PS5 hardware if its cross gen’ argument. Cross gen games obviously run and look much better on PS5 because they use the extra power of the console.
Boy the people in this group sure are whiny. There have been LOADS of great games on the PS5 in the four year since it released. Sure, you could play most of them on the PS4, but do you really want to play at lower resolutions and lower framerates on a console that released eleven years ago?
I know the economy has been bad, but are people really that worried about spending $500 on a gaming machine that you can use for 8 years? Ouch! I'm glad I can actually afford my hobby. Seems like I'm in the minority on that one.
@LogicStrikesAgain
"This gen has seen games that rival the best of last gen. Games like Baldurs gate 3 and Elden Ring to name just a few. And we’re still only halfway current gen."
yea, elden ring is also on ps4 so no loss there. bg3 is a rare current gen-only exclusive that made a mark in terms of innovation. we need more games that are willing to try something "new".
"Now if people cant enjoy games because they're also available on other consoles, PC or even last gen consoles. Well thats their prerogative. But that leads to a narrow path of fulfilment. And hardly warrants a “this gen has no games” comment."
that is the entire point i was making. what that means is, millions of people simply don't need a ps5 to enjoy their hobby right now. i wouldn't dare say this about the ps4 in 2013-2020 though which says a lot about the current state of playstation. sony has not given people a good reason to invest in a ps5. that is a big problem and will become more evident when sales slump unless, of course, gta 6 manages to save the industry (which in itself is sad to see).
"If your definition of true exclusives means not having any PC ports. That would mean Nintendo is the only one that has true exclusives, still followed by Playstation. Does the PC have any notable games or “system sellers” that are true exclusives to that platform?"
up until 4 years ago, sony was known just as much as nintendo for its exclusives and this translated into sales and excitement. that wasn't such a bad thing was it? to give people more reasons to own a console? i don't think there is any way to defend the current state of playstation by dismissing the importance of exclusives like that.
"Also, i dont get the ‘doesn't take full advantage of PS5 hardware if its cross gen’ argument. Cross gen games obviously run and look much better on PS5 because they use the extra power of the console."
well, people buy a console for new experiences... whether that means better graphics or new innovations that couldn't be achieved on older hardware, etc. the ps5 to this point has been stuck in cross gen territory for many of its 1st party titles. if you are limited in game design across the board (including physics, AI, animation etc) due to older hardware, a resolution or framerate boost is not going to fix that. we are 4 years into the gen and only NOW are we starting to see more games built from the ground up for the current gen. that is disappointing no matter how you slice it. don't see how the ps5 can be ranked higher than last place (currently) compared to its legacy and everything that has come before it. if that isn't disappointing, i don't know what is. now, if you never owned a ps4 and jumped into the sony ecosystem for the first time with a ps5 (and have the luxury of 100% backwards compatibility), then you would be in a different boat. for most of the playstation community, that is not the case.
It varies what people want/timing for them but to me it's the don't care option immediately because I don't even have to buy the PS5/Series and I still don't care for one. I used PS4/Xbox One on and off besides PS3/360 years ago, I've never been so uninterested in a console like this gen has been
I don't mean in terms of oh PS4/Xbox One are still supported either or oh PC. I still barely buy 2020-2024 games on PS4/Xbox One because they are so unappealing of game design regardless of hardware limits, I have a handful from 2022/2023 but I've bought more retro games in all 4 years let alone 2017+ been focused on collecting then I had current gen at all of 2017-2020 and 2020-2024. That's not just because some were $1-10 either the retro games. It's just this gen sucks.
In terms of prices sure I've seen discounts (have access to them from family so don't need to buy them but I don't want my own anyway, I'd rather buy retro consoles instead) at some major stores. I'm still not buying one.
I understand other people's preferences and that's totally fine for their reasons to want something/use it/keep it/sell it etc., people still don't get it so why bother.
I hated PS4/Xbox One gen so to me PS5/Series is Part 2 of that or Part 3 of PS3/360 with the games I didn't like on that platform either.
So PS4/Xbox One having less of the ones I cared for you can tell why I'm not interested in this gen AT ALL.
In terms of games or Sony's desperation for sales after Concord, other studios or other things. Sony can get stuffed.
They haven't offered me a SINGLE game, or reason to care about anything I'd want about their garbage console. Cards are ok but again PS+ for further use of them and otherwise they are a neat ideas but can go without them. Even Quick Resume can't use it as digital purpose on Series S/X, can't use it.
The OS isn't Xbox Series/One (carry over forced on to the console and my least favourite of ANY CONSOLE OR WINDOWS or any tech OS ever) but it's still really bad after the much better PS3/4 OS I actually like more. At least the DVD/Blu-ray menu is good on PS4/Xbox One I hated them on PS2/3/PSP.
The PSVR2, Portal (give us dual screen/android or even I don't know 480/720/1080p type resolution targeting so it doesn't run like garbage as if an 'auto' state setting you have no control over.
When Vita did 360/540p on it's app that this is the same of ever since 2019 on Android and onwards since for iPhone, PS4 app or whatever PC offered besides PS Now related) and more gimmicks are passable.
But not exciting enough to even me a person that has wanted consoles FOR these kinds of things more these past few years then 'a box under the tv' hence going back to the Wii, Wii U/Vita as new consoles to me since 2017/2018, why 6th gen gimmicks were exciting but the experimental games help a LOT with me picking them up then trend/competition/niche games nowadays being so bland and uncompelling.
Why Switch's dock means nothing to me, it's a fair feature but nothing new compared to cables of Nomad/PSP, Pocket PC docks compared to Steam Deck being that later because I do my research. Tabletop was more a benefit or the account system then Vita/3DS and others being solo and a pain to swap between.
Part 2:
Astro Bot to me is a museum game I don't want to play, why would I. I despise nostalgia milking garbage, if it was like Playroom/Rescue Mission sure (even beside the lack of PSVR2) but no it's the most boring game I've seen them make yet. Visuals mean nothing to me. Gameplay/level design does. It rarely does anything actually exciting that hasn't been done in more interesting ways to put a spin on things.
Like many Indie platformers/racing games it's bland and unexciting to PLAY. I don't buy retro games for the nostalgia I buy them for the mechanics, so yes I don't like a game with boring mechanics and shoving nostalgia down my throw. Sony wants nostalgia selling to compete but they always fail at it and this as well is another at it. I don't support this. PS Classic was not great but I mean I don't care it didn't have such IPs on it it had IPs I'd never experienced before. I got it at a different time though as barely saw it when it was new. I still wouldn't normally buy it anyway. But it had games more my variety of curiosity then NES/SNES classic anyway.
Astrbot has the same problem I have with heavily inspired/nostalgic Indies. I hate them, they don't try hard enough. Their game design sucks, needs more prototyping in the oven. As if my Foamstars/Biomutant points I say often enough aren't clear of that by how boring they are.
Ratchet/GT7 are garbage and not what I wanted their IPs to be. God of War I dropped off after binging the series so 2018/R aren't my type of games. Sackboy is just a 3D World clone, it's fair in what it tries to do but it's still so who cares worthy. I didn't play LBP because oh 2D platforming revival I played it because it had good ideas mixed well together. 2 and Vita especially.
The other IPs aren't my thing. I enjoyed Knack/Gravity Rush, Driveclub, Infamous Second Son, Killzone Shadowfall on PS4 let alone seeking the Japan Studios ones I missed out on or God of War of old I missed out on hence why Knack I enjoyed, not the IPs everyone else did.
So to me the PS4 was my least favourite console and that's even with having not played many of the IPs on PS1-3 as much back then as I have now caught up on a handful of them like MotorStorm, GOW, not Twisted Metal yet, Loco Roco, Parappa and so on and still appreciate them more for what variety and better offering of GAMEPLAY FIRST with fair enough story to be there they offered then graphics, story and other garbage for casuals/people that don't care about gameplay. So why would I want their products?
Part 3:
They haven't given me anything to consider with their current console/games line up at all.
That's not me saying oh PC ports. I don't have a powerful enough PC and I don't want one. I want consoles for their games/gimmicks and a solid enough OS/hardware.
But I don't see it at all. Even besides the HD Rumble I've not experienced, an ok HD handheld, but still gameplay first games I'm interested in (or sometimes disappointed like Pikmin 4 being so bad, FE Engage is fine but I see the disappointment others have as it is still very casual first and like Pikmin 4 don't like it, I was a newcomer to both, I didn't need casual first approaches to them I just got into them no problem like any new IP)
and have Impulse Triggers of Xbox One or Haptics of PS5 in what 2 games (Rift Apart (hated) and Space Marine 2) I can still go without them and still enjoy the variety Switch offers and that's someone seeking the niche Nintendo IPs not Mario/Zelda/Pokemon, same as Sony.
So if Astro Bot being eh, like Japan Studio/London gone and Media Molcule is left, Bluepoint/Bend I have no trust in making interesting games that aren't in line with the other games Sony offers.
So to me Sony hasn't provided a single thing for me to want a PS5 for at all? That's with family having PS5/Series X and I don't want to use either of them. PS4/Xbox One I was on PS3/360 as still a few games on them and sure parents use the newer ones but I still was fine with the co-op or still seeing what games were on them. This gen PS5/Series hasn't provided anything I'm missing out on. I have no FOMO, I also don't care to use them and don't even have to buy my own. If I have access to them and don't have to buy them but still don't care for them that's enough sign I don't like these products/services at all. XD
They are doing a great job of me having no interest in their consoles 1st party, 3rd being just as boring of game design ideas, bland with other priorities for games instead, console, anything. XD
@Porco Wow, a lot to unpack there. Im not gonna be able to answer everything but ill try to share some of my thoughts.
“yea, elden ring is also on ps4 so no loss there”
I need some clarification first though. In the discussion ‘the PS5 has no games’. Does a game that came out during this gen not count, because its playable on older hardware? Its still a game playable on PS5 right? Was cyberpunk not a next gen game, because it too was playable with worse graphics on an RTX 10 series? Or for example does Mario Kart not count as a game for the Switch because its playable on last gen?
Its hard to have a discussion about these topics, cause everybody seems to have different goalposts.
As an example. Can i regard Gran Turismo 7 as a PS5 game? Because its also playable on the PS4.
To me, it would be weird if i cannot count that game as a game for PS5. You see, it can get very murky if we dont have the same ground rules of what is considered a PS5 game in this discussion.
Basically, when i argue that the PS5 has many games. I also count multiplatform and cross gen games.
“i don't think there is any way to defend the current state of playstation by dismissing the importance of exclusives like that”
I dont dismiss it at all, it was you who said that Playstation has only 1 true exclusive this year because FF and SH2 might be going to PC after a year. So im trying to find what the goalposts are for calling something exclusive, in order to know how to argue my point. I’d say PS has many console exclusives, but if i have to take out games ported to PC. Then they have less. But still more than most platforms.
“the ps5 to this point has been stuck in cross gen territory for many of its 1st party titles.”
Nope, actually 1st party started with current gen titles straight from launch with titles like demon souls, ratchet and clank rift apart, destruction allstars, godfall and returnal, some of them highly acclaimed titles. But they really went full current gen last year starting with spiderman 2 onwards. Third party started even before that with big titles like Final Fantasy 16. I’d say most notable titles that came out the last year were already current gen only.
Also, cross gen isnt a factor of whether a game is innovative or next gen. Look at a game like Starfield, which is current gen only, but has the underlying mechanics of a last gen game. Also cross gen games can get enhanced with features not available to past gen consoles like ray tracing and fast ssd loading, think Resident evil village or Spiderman miles morales.
Look i get where you’re coming from. I think the debate you’re having is if the jump from PS4 to PS5 is warranted. And that discussion might indeed go a different way. Im also not ranking this gen to other gens, cause that too is a different discussion. Only thing im arguing against is the statement “PS5 has no games”
@TrickyDicky99
To me all those games you mention are games from this generation, and some of the best examples too I would add, particularly GOWR which is 1 of my favourite games so far this gen.
@Rich33 Yeah i have to agree with this sentiment. I find it weird when people call these games last gen games. They are definitely current gen. Why? Because they released in current gen. That they're playable on older consoles doesn't make them last gen. Many cross gen games even have ray tracing features not possible on older consoles.
@LogicStrikesAgain
Yeah, I think that what people called true generations are well and truly over - in fact by the time PS6 arrives, I doubt we will see more than a couple of titles that run on PS6 but not PS5 (or at least Pro - this bit may be contentious), for the first 4 years at least, mabye more.
Bigger game budgets, higher console prices, and backwards compatability all have their part to play in this.
I would add though that im not doom-saying, as im happy with this - so called 'cross gen' titles from 3rd parties imo usually have better performance than those just released on PS5, sometimes with clearer image too.
@TrickyDicky99
80+ fps (regularly higher), which no last gen console can achieve.
I think the visuals were significantly upgraded too - GOWR was definitely a massive visual upgrade over GOW 2018 (even when GOW2018 was played in backwards compatibility on my PS5 on quality mode at 60fps) - I played them both back to back last year.
@TrickyDicky99 The most logical way to define games as being last gen or current is their release date. Anything other than that gets unclear and confusing.
Graphics, technical and hardware utilization and aesthetics dont classify a game to be last or current gen.
Current gen games can utilize non of the current hardware capabilities like ray tracing and still be considered current gen. And last gen might look prettier and use more innovative gameplay mechanics and designs than current gen games, but still wont be considered current gen.
You cant tell me Gran Turismo 7 isn't a current gen game, while it has ray tracing which is not supported on last gen consoles.
All those games are basically current games, with last gen versions. But they're still current gen.
The time at which a game is released determines the generation it belongs to, that is the most logical way to classify last or current gen in my opinion.
Edit: Those games are definitely not the exact same, as already explained by the previous post. They look and play worse on last gen consoles and don't use next gen technology such as ssd loading and ray tracing. Because they are specifically developed, released and marketed as current gen games.
@TrickyDicky99 “Release date has no bearing on what gen a game is”
Yeah i might not have explained myself thoroughly there. What i mean by release date. Is that by its date we can determine to which hardware generation it belongs to. So if it came out in the PS5 generation, also known as the ninth console generation. Or current generation. Then i consider it a game of that gen.
To totally clarify, anything that released after November 2020, to me, is classified as current gen. Also known as, the ninth console generation.
“Whatever the hardware that the game is designed around is”
By that logic, why call it last gen? Since those games are also designed around PS5
“So using your logic, PS4 Pro was a different gen to PS4 because PS4 Pro was doing stuff PS4 couldn't.
Nonsense”
This i really don't understand. You will have to enlighten me on this one.
And if i may be so bold as to answer your 3 questions to Rich33 about those games being last gen or not?
Yes, they are all last gen games. Cause they all came out in the eighth console generation. Except for Skyrim, which is an even older gen game.
@TrickyDicky99 I might not completely understand your point.
Games can be designed around PS5, but still be technically capable of being played on a PS4 by lowering the graphical fidelity. Like what happens with many of these cross gen games. Miles morales was designed for PS5, but to also make it work for PS4 they had to cut resolution, graphical fidelity, ray tracing, fast ssd loading times, lighting, shadows, lod distance etc.
There are many games on current gen that are technically possible to be handled by last gen consoles.
Astro bot, i hope you agree is a current gen game. And while its designed around PS5, it is technically possible on a PS4. Again ofcourse, with less graphical fidelity.
So, what if they made a port of that game. Would you then also call it a last gen game all of a sudden, only because its now playable on the PS4?
You see there’s just too many caveats with your definition of generation. If you just look at which generation of consoles the games is released in, it would make things way easier and less confusing.
@TrickyDicky99
As per @LogicStrikesAgain, I agree, the first 2 are last gen, with skyrim being earlier (although I cant remember exactly whether there was a proper remaster in the PS4 era which would complicate matters).
I would have to go back and look at the DF video for GOWR, but as I said I played both it and GOW2018 back to back last year.
GOW2018 was played in quality mode in BC on my PS5 (which runs at 60fps on PS5), therefore the highest visual mode. GOWR was native PS5 version played in uncapped Performance mode.
If I remember right, and its been a while, this means that the native pre-upscaling resolution was actually higher in the way i played it in GOW2018 as it was either around 1800p or 1600p, whereas GOWR in its uncapped performance mode is 1440p I think before upscaling.
Even given this, the visual fidelity visible in GOWR was a clear and significant improvement over GOW2018, made more obvious by the fact I played them 1 after the other. To me, GOWR was a true sequel, a generational leap above 2018.
What constitutes a generational leap is only going to get muddier imo, as hardware improvement slows (and AAA production costs go up), and Im of the opinion that nearly all or all games released in the first 4 years (at least) of PS6 will also have PS5 versions, but as long as they are released on PS6 (from its launch to PS7's) I will still consider them next gen games.
@TrickyDicky99 Think of it as Alan wake 2 for PC. Its a current gen game right? But you can play it on older hardware, like a GTX 1070. It’ll be the same current gen game, you wouldn't call it last gen all of a sudden even though you’re playing with lower quality.
Thats the same with these PS5 games, they're current gen games, which you can play with older hardware and lower quality. But they remain current gen games.
Older than the console generations you just mentioned.
Do you mean they are not technically possible?
Cause there are many games that are technically possible on older generations. Many games can be designed for PS5 that can technically be made possible for older hardware. Again, look at my previous post for the PC example. In the PC space its very usual for a current gen game to be playable on a very wide range of hardware, including very weak hardware.
Nope, the PS5 version of Miles Morales wasnt made for PS4, it has ray tracing and ssd loading which isnt possible on that system.
Take Starfield, a current gen game. Technically its not a generational leap over last gen. It has last gen mechanics, last gen loading, outdated graphics and facial animations. Definitely a game that would be feasible on last gen, albeit with less graphical fidelity. But still considered a current gen game.
Games can be intentionally made smaller like indie games, AA games or retro inspired games like TMNT. All current gen, but because of their game design, all tecnically possible to be played on last gen.
Games like Returnal and Demon Souls could definitely be feasible on last gen. They just didnt happen to make a PS4 version. But just like you said about Miles Morales, those worlds would be perfectly suitable for weak 2013 hardware. However even though those games have game designs that make it suitable for weak 2013 hardware, doesnt make them last gen games.
Last gen game designs and mechanics dont make a game last gen. Many current gen games use last gen game designs.
You think Dave the diver would be possible on last gen? If you think it would, do you also consider that a last gen game? And if not, what if they ported it to last gen? Would it then become last gen?
End of the day, you dont have to listen to me. I just think its easiest to define games by their console generation. You dont. We’ll just have to agree to disagree.
@TrickyDicky99
We both obviously have different opinions on this, GOWR to me is a clear PS5 game (made all the more so due to running at 80-90fps most of the time), and I agree with @LogicStrikesAgain about MM with its Ray Tracing being a proper PS5 game.
Its also probably wrong to say all the games mentioned could NOT be run on a PS3 - as PS3 could cope with open worlds eg Skyrim - you would just have extremely cut back visuals / framerates / less enemies on screen etc. I mean Street Fighter 2 did have a speccy+2 version - it was horrifically dumbed down (with serious reductions including in what moves could be performed), but it did exist!
Im sure this question will be hotly debated as we pass into the PS6 generation - we may even have the odd game released on PS4 after PS6 releases (maybe), and most PS6 games throughout its entire lifetime will also be released on PS5 to get as bigger market as possible, but Im happy with generation classification based on release date (providing native version is launched).
Right, off to more exited about Pro arriving in 3 days.
