Steins;Gate, the long-running visual novel series from MAGES, is getting a reboot in 2025. While no platforms have been announced, this franchise was extremely popular on PSP, PS3, PS Vita, and PS4, so we’d be shocked if it skipped PlayStation systems entirely. It’s true, however, that the primary audience for visual novels has largely shifted to Nintendo Switch these days.
Nevertheless, the game will be a complete reboot of the 2009 original, with new graphics and story elements. The artwork that’s been released as part of this announcement trailer looks lovely.

There’s no other information at this stage, but some fans are curious what this is actually going to add to the experience. Steins;Gate was technically already re-released once as Steins;Gate Elite, which included animated cutscenes from the anime adaptation on top of the original game. That version launched in 2019 on the PS4, so this project does feel a little superfluous at first glance.

I love this game, don't get me wrong, but how many times they gonna remake and/or re-release it? lol
Okay, I’m kinda hyped. I wanted to try Steins Gate but I wanted the 2009 original on Switch. Hopefully this reboot comes to Switch (which it likely will unless.. certain things happen) along with PS and PC.
@Ralizah until we can figure out how to travel back in time to change the past.
I know I'm part of the problem because I'm gonna buy this, but this is so unnecessary. The original version is still fine today. The later version with the anime cut-scenes added in is still fine today. How many times do we need this game, unless they're gonna pull a Final Fantasy VII and it's actually not a remake but something weird, which unlike Final Fantasy VII might actually work with Steins;Gate.
I’m on board for this, simply because Elite didn’t have all the content from the original game and (to my knowledge) the original never got a PS4 release.
I treasure my Vita copies of the original and S;G 0, and I like Elite for what it is, but I hope this new version ONLY adds and doesn’t subtract from the original.
Wish they'd make this into a 3D adventure game instead of remaking the visual novel yet again.
Why not fully rework the game into something completely different that also could reach a larger audience as well?
I'd love to play that.
My question would be, are there changes substantive enough to warrant a re-buy?
Are they rehauling the entire story?
What are these plot changes, and are they that much different from the original?
@johncalmc The original isn't on modern consoles, though.
Kinda hated it when they changed the art style from the original to 0, and still used the sprites from the original, it really threw me off.
I had the original on Vita, never finished it. Got Elite on the Switch, never finished it. Maybe, if it does come to PS5, the third time will be the charm.
I've been meaning to play the original for quite a while now. Guess I'll wait and see whether this remake is a better place to start.
Great anime loved it growing up
looks the same, aside from Mayuri's dress, which I'd guess is significant if this is a FF7 Remake type situtation.
After buying "Steins;Gate", "Steins;Gate 0" [Vita/PSTV], and "Steins;Gate My Darling's Embrace" [PS4]?
There's no need to ever consider another purchase of this title - short of an entirely new game.
I have it on Vita, but never got around to playing it. Maybe I should give it a go
Yeah, this is pointless. Do they even remember they were making Steins;Gate 0 Elite?
NICE NICE NICE.
Everytime I end up going past the Radio Kaikan in Akihabara I always make a Steins:Gate reference of some sort as a video haha.
It already got Elite? Was that not enough it getting anime segments with it.
Besides the spin offs fans got the original, Zero and Elite as of the main series and the rest spin offs on occassion, fair manga and so on other stuff.
Pulling a Nep here or other series with very few entries with another remake/rebirth kind of thing like why?
Or a Tactics Ogre where the 2nd game got a PSP port/multiplat remake because why so many times like that. It's weird seeing low entry series just rebooting all the time.
Being in news articles is one thing but other game genre approaches maybe, or just making a sequel/another spin off why another reboot what was so bad about it. It not clinical enough or something in the dialogue or did Elite not cut enough out for modern audiences? XD What are they going for here with this is all I have to question.
Do they think it just doesn't work for audiences (gameplay wise sure but I mean that's why other approaches can be attempted or stick to what works) or something? They out of ideas?
What new lens do they want to do with this is all I have to ask.
Make it a sequel or spin off and get people interested, those that are, are, those that aren't aren't.
Unless they want a Danganronpa Ultra Despair Girls or something else like Utawarerumono Zan type approach then visual novel ones (even if Danganronpa has VN moments besides the exploration or Phoenix Wright the detective stuff or whatever else and yes I have no played them I just remember the DS games had that in some of it's missions or something and heard about it).
This article has given me a new perspective on the topic. Thank you for the insights
