While we do have an appreciation for some classic sports games, like Everybody’s Tennis on PSP and NFL Street on PS2, it’s a genre that generally doesn’t age well. That’s not stopping QUByte from partnering with Atari to bring back a selection of Accolade outings on PS5 and PS4.
For those of you who just want to know what’s included, here’s the lineup:
- HardBall II
- HardBall!
- Hoops Shut Up and Jam! (Originally named Barkley Shut Up and Jam!)
- Summer Challenge
- Winter Challenge
As you’d expect from a modern compilation, all games will be updated with upscaled visuals, save states, filters, and more. There’s no release date attached.
To quote a classic from former PlayStation boss Jim Ryan, “Why would anyone play these?” Well, to be totally fair, we’ll try each one for a total of 15 seconds and move on. No one said game preservation had to include the cream of the crop!

It was insanely satisfying to throw a successful curveball in Hardball on the C64, so I might play these…for the aforementioned 15 seconds.
And now the negativity spreads to the articles.
@Papa_Emeritus I think it's great that compilations like this are being made, and I will certainly buy it. But let's be real: these are not great games in 2024.
These games will benefit the most from PlayStation Super Spectral Resolution enhancement
I will buy this because of Summer Challenge and Winter Challenge.
I had Summer Challenge back then and played it a fair bit, it was fun, though I'm not sure I'd play it much today.
I'd much rather see a PS1 era summer games brought forward if there are any, the Saturn had Athlete King's which is still great to play today
@CVCubbington I see your 15secs and i'll raise you to...20secs.
is it ps5 pro enhanced?
Maybe not these multi sport titles but the Epyx range (Winter, Summer, California and World Games) remain very playable. Perhaps Sammy would prefer more micro transactions and loot boxes?
I have a lot of fond memories of the hardball games. Accolade sports titles were a part of my childhood, and yet, I think its better they remain there.
Id be afraid to destroy my childhood memories by revisiting hardball.
Should’ve added John Elway: Quarterback. That is certifiably <i>the</> worst sports game ever made! I managed to complete a pass once and my brother and I cheered so loudly! And never managed to ever complete a pass ever again lol.
I think its cool with any of these classics are being brought back.
Good on Atari for contributing to game preservation.
That's about all I will say about this one.
Should really include Barkley Shut Up And Jam Gaiden
Not for me. I'm waiting patiently for Thunder force IV. One of my favourite games when I was young. Really pushed the mega drive.
That is a wild release. I wish we would get more of this stuff. No matter how obscure.
I do appreciate it when even subpar games get preserved. Even many bad games do not deserve to be lost to time, in my opinion. Like that Bubsy collection that's coming out: there is not a single Bubsy game I've played that I've enjoyed (opinions may vary on that, but that's just my experience), but I was SO hyped when that was announced haha, just to hear that my boy Bubsy, The King of Bad, is preserved for the foreseeable future. So while I am not going to pretend these are all-time classics that everyone has been waiting so long to come back, I still appreciate seeing stuff like this.
I actually really enjoy playing all of these games to this day. 100%ed a few on this list just last year on original hardware. This is a day 2 purchase for me 😺
Fond memories of Hardball on C64 and Amiga. However, as a young NFL fan in the 80s I put many hours into another Accolade game... 4th & Inches. It had no official licenses so surprised and disappointed that it's not included.
Barkley Shut Up and Jam! is one of the greatest games ever made.
"Crummy"?
They weren't that bad, some of them were good in parts.
Hardball!, or as I know it:
"As made famous in The Princess Bride!"
@Topov81 oh wow it's been decades since I've thought about that game. You are absolutely correct it needs to be in this package.
Wow, I remember playing a fair amount of Hardball! on the Amiga 500 back in the day. The catcher’s mitt moved independent of his body when placing pitches and singles down the line all animated the same way. Not exactly The Show type sim we have these days but jolly good fun 40 years ago. I don’t remember the sequel. Now, EA needs to bring back One on One: Dr. J vs. Larry Bird!
