Empire of the Ants is a real-time strategy game aiming for photorealism, and it’s one we had mixed thoughts about in our PS5 review.
“The presentation is gorgeous and it's enjoyable thinking about the smaller creatures in our world differently, but [the game] tries to be too much at once,” we wrote. “The multiplayer is fun for a time, but lacks the depth seasoned strategy players want. A focus on either the story or RTS would have helped a lot.”
Nevertheless, it’ll play best on Sony’s supercharged PS5 Pro system, as an interview with Gaming Bolt reveals the release will run at 60fps. On the standard PS5 console, the title will be 30fps. Both versions will upscale to native 4K from a lower internal resolution, although it’s probably safe to assume PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) will provide better image quality on the upgraded console.
As a strategy game, this isn’t an experience that necessarily needs high frame rates, but 60fps will always look and feel better than 30fps, so it’s a nice upgrade to have. Are you ant-icipating this game on Sony’s new hardware at all? Crawl into the comments section below and let us know.

Not sure if has been stated before, but will Dragon's Dogma 2 run at 60FPS on Pro?
Ant fans will eat this up. Me? I play Earth Defense Force to blow up ants 🐜🫡🐜
@Oram77 There was an article earlier in the week about this. Early indications are it's a lot better on PS5 Pro.
I see no reason not to offer a 60 fps mode on the base machine.
The minimal lower CPU clocks? This can’t be the reason!
The 36% lower GPU clocks? Then reduce the rendering resolution on both axis by 20%, i.e. if the base resolution for Pro is 1080p (from which it then upscales to 4k with PSSR ), then choose 864p and upscale it from there with FSR3 to e.g. 1440p.
This generation is such a transitional mess. Next gen, everything should run at 60fps or higher and AI upscaling technology should do away with all these ridiculous settings based on your platform of choice, TV, monitor etc
Ahh now the „Sorry you‘re only getting 30fps from now on because we want you to buy the pro eeehhh because the base ps5 is too slow now : (“ times begin
@Cerny That would drive me away from Playstation and closer to PC next gen.
@Cerny ah yes as Sony are definitely forcing devs to release 30fps games….
@16BitHero 60fps will never be standard on console.
@Cerny You think Sony went to this random studio and told them to not make their mostly unknown game 60fps on the base PS5 to help sell the Pro?
Why doesn't Sony just have their first party studios (who they actually control) make their games 60fps exclusive to the Pro? If what you say is true Wolverine should only run at 30!
I was interested, but after finding out it is 30fps only on non-professional consoles I’ve decided to add it to my Steam wish list instead and I’ll get it on sale for PC at some point. It’s no longer worth buying day 1 if they aren’t going to take the time to add in a 60fps mode.
I don't know, maybe it's just a very strange coincidence. EotA is a PS5 Pro launch title and this strangely only runs on the Pro with 60fps. If Alan Wake 2 on the base PS5 packs 60fps then probably also an ant simulator I would guess. Just as it was probably also a coincidence that as soon as the first got his hands on a pro, Sony has announced that the plates no longer fit. Strange coincidences lately, right?
It just sounds so lazy if there isn't a 60fps on base ps5.
The pro is just a way for developers to become lazy about optimization.
If first party can get the quality and performance as they do on the base ps5, plus all the different types of options.
I.e spidermans performance/raytracing mode then why shouldn't we expect a flawless performance mode at least on a base.
People are acting like we all sit in photo mode and check all the details. When we don't.
@DennisReynolds I would have believed that previously but just look at where technology is heading, it's always making strides forward and with all the toxicity and complaining this generation, you'd think that's the minimum manufacturers and developers would aim for. I guess we'll find out in a few years...
@Max_the_German my thoughts exactly, the pro has the same outdated cpu from the standard ps5 so there's no reason to not have a 60fps mode on the base ps5
I have no interest in this game having read the review, but 30fps should be consigned to history, and Sony could really help make sure it is, with a concerted effort.
Part of this would need Sony to never include or show images or videos of games that are not running in 60fps modes (with set spec for framerate drops) on anything they control, including store fronts, SoPs, advertising etc - this would ensure that 60fps modes are targetted during development, then devs can add 30fps modes via scaling if they want to (and I still think they should).
However in reality I fear this may happen far more - 60fps only for pro - and as a 60fps only gamer (NO exceptions) Pro may well give me more choice in what games i buy.
@Randinator123
Very, very few games should be CPU limited really, but on the GPU front it depends on how low the devs are willing to drop the resolution, LOD's and graphics effects etc when using resource hungry engines like UE5 (i think thats an understatement when it comes to UE5 tbh).
Im not saying its right but as the game engine is likely very heavy on the GPU, it will be much easier to acheive 60fps on Pro, particularly if PSSR allows better images from much lower resolutions.
@DennisReynolds 60 fps was standard on my first console, the SNES. The switch to 3D games (starting with Star Fox etc. on the SNES) with their 30 fps (and less!) was a big backlash.
PS5 finally achieved for 3D games what the SNES achieved back then for 2D games: 60 fps, great games, no loading times.
@Max_the_German yeah I’m happy with the base PS5 performance for its price. The last time I played this many 60fps games I had a PS2.
@16BitHero I mean you kinda said it yourself tech is involving meaning better visuals, better AI, better RT, bigger more dense worlds, bigger crowds and so on and with that comes a big cost. Look at GTA 6 that's going to be the biggest game ever, visually it will be unmatched and it will be doing things no other game has done since RDR2 and because of that it will no doubt be 30fps even on Pro. As long as visuals keep improving 60fps can never be standard on console.
Wait, so it doesn't have a performance mode? Is this going to be a new trend once the PS5 Pro releases? I expected this from GTA6 but not anything else.
@DennisReynolds you are likely right but I hope you're wrong! 😁
