Widely regarded as one of the greatest Final Fantasy games, talk of a Final Fantasy 6 remake has been floating around for years. In particular, the epic RPG is an obvious candidate for Square Enix's trademark 'HD-2D' overhaul, given its 16-bit origins.
And guess what? Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake producer Masaaki Hayasaka completely agrees. Speaking to Inverse, he's asked if there are any other 2D RPGs that he'd love to see be remade in the HD-2D style.
"It’s not that we have concrete plans for this, but personally I would have to say Final Fantasy 6," Hayasaka admits. He goes on to reveal that 2018's Octopath Traveler was greatly influenced by the Squaresoft classic in terms of "the highest quality pixel art" — and that he'd "love" to see Final Fantasy 6 recreated in a similar way.
To be frank, we'd love to see it as well. While Final Fantasy 7 is the game that rocketed the franchise to global stardom, its predecessor is a masterpiece; one of the best 2D RPGs ever made, and its recent Pixel Remaster is a stark reminder of that.
As for how it would look in the HD-2D style, well... just gawk at the aforementioned Dragon Quest 3 remake. Square Enix already has Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake in the works, so it's clearly ready to push ahead with old-school revivals — we just need to hope that its plans extend beyond Dragon Quest.

I would prefer a full modern 3D remake, but I wouldn't turn my nose up at a HD-2D remake
@Mintie So would I... but I think it's a more likely to be HD-2D or nothing, so i'll take HD-2D. Similar with Chrono Trigger. HD-2D is probably easier to not mess it up too.
I just do not like the HD 2D style. Even if it's better implemented in DQ3 and Star Ocean 2. I'm so ready for them to move on from it and try different styles. And I too would prefer a full 3d remake regardless of how long they think it would take them
It's the best Final Fantasy game but I'd only be okay with a real remake of it and not whatever FF7 "Remake" was.
This would be GotY for me in whatever year it arrived, the whole ‘Sgould remakes/remasters/dlc even be included?’ discussion be darned.
Greatest FF of all time (for me). Would love to see a remake that does this game justice.
Status check on the rumored FF9 remake?
The game is fine as is. I really don't want another FF7 Remake/Rebirth souring my memories of a great game.
@charbtronic Rumour is that it'll be announced relatively soon. By all accounts the project is real — just depends on what it actually is in terms of scope.
The great part about FF6's art is that it still looks great today, and has a lot of nostalgia to boot. I'd appreciate a patch or DLC that lets me play the additional content that was released (I think) on GBA. FF6 is not known for its difficulty so it would be nice to have a challenge.
I find it overhyped myself. It was good for it's time, but i don't think it delivers something that would make it stand out today.
But you know... why not? Just cause i don't care for it very much, i know there are many that do.
I would prefer to see Chrono trigger and Xenogears.
I so wished FFVI and FFVII had swapped places in people's mind and instead of getting endless Nomura stuff, we would have had premium dream remake/rebirth of FFVI
Thought there were rumours on a FF9 remake too...
@Mintie Why a 2D one is way more cost effective won't take three generations to release.
@MichaelNau I wish they just upgraded the graphics and controls with FF7R then I could have finished the game 5 years ago.
@Flaming_Kaiser because my girl Terra deserves The Best... I say that but what I ACTUALLY want is something less graphically intense than VIIRilogy, maybe somewhere between XIV and XVI if that makes sense? oh oh or more like the graphical intensity of World of FF but with XIVs character proportions!
I’m not usually one to want more remakes but I think this is one of those legendary game exceptions. I’d be very happy to see it.
Unpopular opinion: Full 3D works better for Final Fantasy so I'd rather see 6 in that style. Not saying this would be a bad choice, but I'd see it more as a remaster than anything.
It's only my 8th favourite mainline Final Fantasy, but I wouldn't be opposed to a Remake, even though I would prefer a 3D Remake instead of HD-2D.
We just got the pixel remaster like a year ago. The game is still playable and holds up great today. There's really no need for them to do a remake, just cherish the memories folks.
I like 2D-HD but when comes to mainline FF, the remake should be full 3D.
I’d rather they make more weird stuff or smaller FF titles than remakes.
It’s my favorite game of all time, would pay full $69.99 for it. I would definitely take a full 3D remake as well.
@Mintie
I would too but they already said a while ago that would take them 20 years to do
@charbtronic
Still waiting on that to be confirmed.
There’s also the rumours about a FF Tactics remaster and FFXIII remake
I'd rather see a game like FFVI redone in the style of FFIX, or the DS III/IV remakes — I really think the cartoony stylised look is the perfect middle ground between pixel art (I was never really a huge fan of HD-2D) and the hyper-realistic FFVIIR games.
@Mintie I find some of the latest 2D looking fantastic and have more souls then the 3D stuff.
And the other thing Square-Enix can't make stuff cost-effective. I think FF7R is good looking but they somehow can't make games run good and without big issues.
