Helldivers 2 was the big winner at the 2024 TIGA Awards, scooping Game of the Year, Best Visual Design, and Best Technical Innovation.
The chaotic co-op shooter set the world on fire when it launched back in February (god, that feels like so long ago), but its popularity steadily declined as the months wore on, to the point where it's now all but buried when it comes to Game of the Year conversations.
So in that sense, it's nice to see Helldivers 2 get some recognition. TIGA's Game of the Year award was decided by attendees of the actual ceremony, which took place on the 28th November.
For those wondering, TIGA is a trade association that works to bolster the UK's video game industry. It has enough backing to launch government-facing campaigns, and loads of high profile developers and publishers are counted as members.
It's also worth mentioning that Sony grabbed a couple of other awards, which were decided by judges. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 claimed Best Use of a License (we assume its October 2023 release date makes the cut), and The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered won Best Narrative in Games. We guess Naughty Dog's story has simply never been bettered over the last four years!

I love managed democracy!
A great game that was/ is a blast to play with friends, but just quickly got left in the wake of further great games released soon after. To be fair, despite an apparent lack of first party titles (as people say), this has been a solid year for games, and it's not (quite) over yet!
People go on about Helldivers 2's decline in popularity like it's a dead game, but the reality is that most live-service/multiplayer games lose the majority of their initial players very early on. Plus those launch period numbers were an anomaly; very few games peak that high that early on, or ever.
Go into the game right now and you'll have no problem finding a team to join. Or start an operation and you'll have three other players join your team almost immediately. Helldivers 2 is still going strong and any nominations or awards it receives are well deserved.
FOR DEMOCRACY!!!
Well deserved as its a cracker of a game.
I think that's two goty got helldivers 2 so far. It really did deserved to be nominated for the tga game awards, but they chose dlc instead.
@Markatron84 I think the player base will jump back up when it gets the next enemy faction (maybe announcement next month?) also once this gets added to plus probably next year, it's going to bring in tons of new players.
It always looked interesting to me, and I'm glad it's been getting some recognition, but for some reason I just wasn't in the mood for a multiplayer live service game when it was released, and so I didn't get it.
I noticed though that it's on sale in the PS Store as part of the Black Friday promotion. I admit I am tempted to buy it now, but I'm already invested in the latest Call of Duty (on Xbox, via GamePass), and will certainly continue playing that live service game, so I dunno ...
@MadCaptain2207 i don't play multiplayer games often, but this game really got its hooks in me. I have over 250 hours in it.
@Americansamurai1 yeah, I imagine the numbers will spike when the third faction drops, just like they did with the "buff everything" patches.
I didn't get it until late August/early September; I'm at 104 hours so far 😁
Hell yeah! Well deserved! The fact Helldivers 2 was not nominated by The Video Game Awards for game of the year is a travesty.
This dull, repetitive and generic game won an award?! It’s a free to play game that somehow makes you pay money to play it
It’s alright game
@Mattock1987 I'm not a fan of the game, but you pay for it because it has no F2P mechanics. Everything is unlockable by playing the game, battlepasses don't expire, and they're constantly adding to it.
It also launched at €40, so even the modest Black Friday discount nets you it for little more than the price of lunch.
It's also a witty, satirical piss-take of jingoism, I'm not too sure there's many other games that do that, let alone do it successfully.
@Mattock1987 are you bored?
For Democracy!
@Markatron84 could definitely see the announcement trailer at the tga or state of play.
not had a PS5 that long, moved over from Xbox and this game was a big reason for that. 3 of us have been playing this non stop all week, it's so much fun, and a really positive, healthy vibe playing with randoms too, probably a benefit of it NOT being free to play...
