Hogwarts Legacy was the best-selling game last year, and is one of the most successful releases of all time. It stands to reason, then, as Warner Bros looks to create a new wave of content based on the seminal series of novels, a sequel is on the way.
And yes, according to Variety, a successor to the open world role-playing game is a “very big priority” for the firm. We’ve known for a little time that developer Avalanche Software has been working on a sequel, and its importance has been made clear in the past.
One new detail, however, is that the game will intertwine with HBO’s upcoming television series adaptation, slated to release in 2026.
“The games team has been coordinating some of the big-picture storytelling elements in the Hogwarts Legacy sequel with the storylines that will play out in the Harry Potter HBO series,” the site reports.
That suggests to us that Warner Bros is probably eyeing a 2026 release date for Hogwarts Legacy 2, as it goes on a huge Harry Potter offensive. While it’s a tight deadline, it has been reported that Suicide Squad maker Rocksteady has been roped in to support Avalanche’s work, so we imagine it’s all hands on deck.
There are also reports that a major expansion is in development for Hogwarts Legacy, which could add as much as 15 hours to the main game. This will be part of some kind of Definitive Edition of the original, which is currently unannounced.
We imagine a Hogwarts Legacy sequel would build upon the existing game’s open world. To be honest, we’d be satisfied with a sequel that expands on the existing foundations and simply adds more activities to the open world.

Hopefully its remaining single player or are WB going to go with the live service route that was previously rumoured. Id like to say they learned from Suicide Squad but this is the games industry and it doesn't learn anything tee hee hee
This is one of the first games I have lined up for my Pro.
I didn't play a tonne of it before but was enjoying what I did play before I got distracted by some other shiny bauble, so looking forward to giving it another go!
Really hope those reports of an expansion are true - I thought this game was fantastic (1 of the best of this gen), and its high on my list for a Pro replay.
Super hyped about all of this. I loved everything about the base game and enjoyed every minute in it. Very much more than the sum of its parts. The expansion, and the sequel are going to be absolute must haves for me. The only factor i don't understand is how they're going to connect the 19th century Legacy into the HBO series, as, if I recall what JKR said about the series, its' just a TV adaptation of the books that is supposed to stick more to the direct events of the books than the film adaptations that deviated and went their own way a bit. So how will Legacy 2 connect directly to Potter's story a century later? I don't mind trying to connect it, but I also enjoyed Legacy existing outside the Potter-Voldem--err, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named story.
If this one is live service it's DOA. It won't sell nearly as well as the first.
Oh no... don't make it cannon! The story and characters are awful!
Well, the TV show is based on the books and is casting Harry Potter et al. So I wonder what exactly the game will be 🤔
It'd maybe interesting if the game focused on older students or teachers in the past rather than the young HP crew or anything like that, my personal preference would be a more detective based storyline away from all that is HP, but heavily featuring Hogwarts as a location and using a former student/students as the player characters.
This IP is made for a private investigator/detective duo noir spin off.
The wife is a huge HP fan and enjoyed the game immensely, can't wait for this to release as it would make the perfect gift. 😁
Of course they are, they need to recover those millions of dollars lost from that flop suicide squad
@NEStalgia
I suspect the layout/features of hogwarts and the wider area from the game may be used in the series - the game world and layout was based both on the books and films, but they also had to create a lot of things (and resolve inconsistencies between films etc). Maybe the series will use some of this. Just an idea - I dont know.
Imagine if WB make this like SSKTJL....
I am suddenly massively worried for the tv series. I was under the impression that the series was meant to be making up for the extreme liberties that the films took by being a more accurate adaptation.
But now they are going to be linking this wholly original content to it? What a soul crushing disappointment this news is. And I bet that I am not the only Harry Potter fan who thinks this.
not sure a sequel of this game would catch me quite like the first, all the discovery and revelio was what i liked. if it is the same location it will feel a bit too samey.
Don't care at all about TV show and definitive edition, but would love a sequel with more interactive school and time management.
@Rich33 Maybe, it sounded more like they meant tying the narrative, but it just doesn't make sense tying the game's era to the actual Potter narrative. Maybe you're right, it's about the castle.
I feel like the game took more from the films than the games in terms of the castle (basing it off the 2 real castles it was filmed in), but did allow it to be much bigger which was great, as the real castles are quite small. I assume the TV show will use all CG/greenscreen because I doubt they have the budget to rent and rennovate real castles as the films did.
@LifeGirl I agree, but I'm not sure we're sure they're going to be changing the direction of the TV show. The info that it was to be a strict adaptation of the books came from JKR, and I'm pretty sure she's an executive producer of it, so I doubt they can change the script without her approval. Yeah WB is WB, and they have the film rights, but I'm not sure they'd change the whole premise like that.
Not that I'd mind a TV show set in the WoW that was original and separate from Harry, too.
If the next game is pro enhanced, that might be enough to get me on board to buy a pro.
Got about halfway through the game before i got bored of it. It was great at the start but i just got bored, got too repetative and characters were a bit bland. Might give it another go sometime but nit sure.
I completed the game with a character from each house. I just loved that the stiry and outcomes of some situations changed because of that. I was really happy it did so well especially because of the faux outrage, and feeble attempt to get it cancelled, during its launch
The title doesn’t make sense, huge priority for PS5 or huge hit for PS5 and sequel high priority for WB?

I think Push Square are missing the word ‘sequel’ from the headline.
I loved the first one so I'll be there day one for the sequel assuming WB doesn't live service it. To their credit they showed surprising restraint with the Quiddich game so here's hoping Legacy 2 turns out great!
So your saying that the developer had complete free reign and made it the success it is and now warner bros have got involved and are making them intertwine it with the series which sounds like they are going to kill the sequel already.
To me hogwartd legacy was great because of the freedom and grounded take of going to lessons and exploring, the story itself was sort of secondary to the world.
All I want them to do is create a new story within that world and open it up more and more interactions.
I don't need it to have to follow a path along side a tv series story.
It's like the freedom fighter being free and then having chains put on them.
Could warner bros just let them be.
Just like they should of rocksteady
@NEStalgia
From what I am remembering (and I may be getting it all wrong as its ages since i read all the books last) the game used the film designs for the individual rooms/corridors/areas etc, but tried to tie the locations of said rooms/corridors/areas together to better fit where the books describe them, but also to fit them all into the castle exterior - which ended up being a squatter, slightly simpler and more boxy version of flim 3 - in order to fit it all in!
Though they did end up with 1 major inconsistency in that im sure hagrids hut / CofMC were right next to the forbidden forest in both the films and books, but really werent close at all in the game.
The game also featured a number of rooms/areas not featured in the films.
I wonder if its this layout / extra rooms they are planning on using, but also the surrounding area (eg locations of hogsmeade and the hamlets / regions) they will use for the various flying scenes.
Quite agree RE the plot / script - if the idea is for the series to be closer to the books, you cant retcon in a story set nearly a century beforehand, much as I do like Legacy!
@NorrinRadd
Hogwarts Legacy will be pro enhanced.
So, Defiance 2.0.
@cuttlefishjones
The outrage was silly in my view as the game designers clearly added certain characters / plot points in direct contrast to the authors views, and the devs should have been supported for doing so.
What was funny imo was that whilst you can say the use of the 3 curses by good guys/girls is thoroughly covered in the books (Harry uses 2, including Crucio repeatededly, with others perhaps urging him to use AK in 1 scene), the devs allowed you to convert the 'ultimate good guy/girl' spell Expelliarmus into a curse...
I'm not a HP fan. HL is fine? I'm more interested in seeing how WB starts fleecing fans after HL blew up. I can't bring myself to believe they'll have the integrity to resist exploiting fans as much as possible.
@Ken_Kaniff Doubtful. HP is one of those brands that can transcend things like discernment, lol.
@LikelySatan Well i bought the first one and can say definitively that if the second one is live service I'll never purchase it. Not to say people won't buy it, but it definitively won't sell 25 million like the first.
I presume that Hogwarts Legacy 2 will be using many of Hogwarts Legacy 2 assets with a few updates, which will greatly decrease development time.
@Rich33 Great details, that does make sense, I think (and why does the interior need to fit into the exterior? This is Hogwarts! )
Yeah, I could see them using the physical designs, but it still sounded more like they wanted to connect plots or something, which sounds so "big publisher." Doesn't mean it'll be bad I suppose though, I suppose it could sort of indirectly connect, like earlier eras of the families (19th century Malfoys and the like, we already have a Weaseley headmistress), early work of Riddle's ancestors paving the way, or something like that.
@NEStalgia
Actually, I forgot about the room of requirement - that doesnt fit anywhere...ever!
You may be right on characters.
In addition to those you mention, I think based on the info in the game, dumbledore is due to start Hogwarts in your characters 6th or 7th year (ie your year 2 or 3).
This would be interesting because based on your characters abilities/exploits, he/she is either as powerful or more powerful than dumbledore at school age (although that sort of suggests your character dies, or moves away from public life maybe to protect the repository, before grindelwald rises to power).
Also Ominis is likely to be a fairly close relative of Voldermort, and will be aged very close to 50 when VM is born, therefore grandfather or uncle / great uncle etc.
Much as i love the game - I just hope they dont go too far - we dont need any more time turner uses!
Edit: (Im being forgetful) Ominis cant be VMs grandfather, as we already know his grandfather, on the gaunt side of the family, is Marvolo Gaunt, but we could be looking at great uncle etc.
@Rich33 Very belated, but that's actually great catches of the Gaunt family connection to Voldemort, I somehow never connected the Gaunt references an Marvolo!
@NEStalgia
The parselmouth section on the way to the scriptorium was added to show how closely he is related to VM I believe.
We could even see Marvolo gaunt at Hogwarts in your characters next year - the age fits about right I think.
