If this never-ending Black Friday promotional period has proven anything, it’s that there’s still value in physical games. While the PS Store’s offered a meaty selection of discounts, the prices are unambitious – and bordering on uncompetitive really.
Shop around here in the UK, however, and you can get some top-notch titles for a song. One example this author noticed over the weekend was Final Fantasy 16, getting flogged on Blu-ray for £14.99. It currently costs £37.49 digitally – more than double the price.
The problem is, Sony doesn’t really want you to buy physical. It’s been less aggressive than its rivals at phasing out its retail presence, but make no mistake, it’d rather you shop on the PS Store. That’s one reason why the PS5 Pro comes without a disc drive.
Now we actually give the company some degree of credit for being flexible here. While we’ve complained about the overall cost of the PS5 Pro plenty, we do think there’s merit in allowing consumers to choose whether they’re interested in physical media or not.
The big problem is that the platform holder’s come completely unprepared. As we’ve reported previously, the optional PS5 Disc Drive accessory has been selling for an enormous mark-up on auction sites, and Sony’s done a terrible job replenishing stock.
At the time of writing, the add-on is still unavailable at PlayStation Direct in the UK and USA, and we’ve heard from various readers that the situation is similar across Europe as well. British chain Currys has had some stock in today, although it’s pushed the price up from £99.99 to £109.99 due to its scarcity, knowing it can profit from the overall lack of availability. It’s since sold out, too.
On sites like eBay, resellers are charging anywhere up to £149.99 for one of these, which isn’t quite as high as it was a couple of weeks ago, but is still extraordinary for an accessory that shouldn’t be hard to find. All in all, it’s leading to significant frustration within the fanbase.
Now if stores like Currys are beginning to get stock, then it means Sony is shipping out units and this issue should be resolved in due course. But it should never have come to this, and the company deserves criticism for putting consumers in this position.
We have our doubts, but let’s hope the stock situation is resolved come Christmas.

I am glad I ordered it the same time I preordered the pro
@JustCameHereToSay I’m guessing they didn’t anticipate that many drives being sold
This is why disk driveless consoles are a collasal joke
I did post this morning on a couple of threads on here about 6am Currys UK had stock £99.99 free next day delivery.
I got one of course to go with Pro.
I guess they sold out now.
but i though everyone loved digital games so why do people want a disc drive and why are most ps5 consoles sold the disc version
or maybe in fact people want the choice
It’s me. I’m one of the many.
Hence my early post about Currys UK stock this morning, that means we have stock coming in.
So keep an eye on PS Direct, Argos and Smyths Toys and you will probably get one this weekend.
Sony have handled this situation terribly, it's mind blowing they didn't even have Pro's available for sale with a disc drive included, like they do with the base console
Getting stick module replacements for the DualSense Egde has also been a nightmare. Argos stocked them this week for half a day. I'm ashamed to say I bought 4 of them to stock up knowing that skanks are buying them all to sell on eBay for £80 each.
A disc ps5 pro is the way to go.word up son
Fortunately, I had a PS5 Slim that I bought a year ago, so I transplanted the drive from that and swapped the lower plates, then I sold my old PS5 as a digital edition; I managed to recover nearly the full cost of the slim and got a disc drive out of it. Really worked out well.
I think one thing Sony really need to consider is that if they really go all digital and force it through, they are in danger of losing a huge chunk of their loyal fans to PC. Honestly, if there's no physical option for collectors like me, we will just get a PC and jump on the Steam train.
So many people complaining about something they're not even interested in buying 🙄
And no reports on the many people who have bought one. I don't know how articles like this are helpful. Everything is anecdotal and all is concentrated on people who are unhappy, many of whom are unhappy on behalf of others.
Sony may deserve criticism, but so do consumers for not doing their research before they buy a premium product, and so far there is none. I own a Pro, I knew disk drives were scarce before I bought it, they were sold out before the Pro was released, I'm not crying about it and playing the blame game.
It’s is frustrating but I know a lot of people who have managed to get one in the UK. I thought I was going to have to wait till next year, but it took less than two weeks. You just have to be on the ball.
This week alone at least PlayStation Direct, Currys and Argos have all had stock at some point. Currys had stock for over 4 hours today. I’d recommend both the alerts feature on HotUKdeals website and the free HotStock app. It’s also worth being logged into the stores on your phone/device so you check out quickly when stock alerts come in. Good luck
The sceptic in me believes theyve done it deliberately trying to steer people down the all digital route.
In reality they've probably just dramatically underestimated how many people still want to buy physical discs
@themightyant good advice. I'm just glad that I bought the disc drive before the Pro preorders went up
@themightyant thanks to you I've got mine today from Curry's. Now I just need to buy a Pro... The HotDeal app you recommended worked very well
@themightyant HUKD is dangerous! I spend too much money because of that app 😊
Did add one of the bundles from Currys to my basket, by the time I went to pay, it was soldout.
Still no disc drive, means still no Pro.
A problem Sony made. I'll wait until at least there is a "must play" Pro enhanced game. Haven't seen one yet.
I still haven't got one yet , however stock seems to be trickling out , currys, argos,ps direct and even sports direct have had stock over the last few days , i only get paid next week as I've spent far to much for black friday I can't wait a few more days, prices seems to have dropped on ebay drastically the average is £135 or best offer.
I had one on back order with shop to, and it finally arrived yesterday so maybe they have stock now?
I saw a Reddit post last week speculating that the UK would get stock on the 27th. I happened to check the PlayStation Direct website on Monday and bagged one, delivered the very next day too!
LTT did a thing recently(ish) about the cost of physical vs digital and they concluded that if you wait for PS/Xbox store sales it was about equal so going disc-less was the best option for cost conscious buyers, although my own scenario hasn't seen me pay a penny more for digital, even when the PS store has a sale (which, let's be honest, is a bit like DFS' perpetual sales cycle) typically I save 10-50% shopping around, even on pre-orders.
Gotta admit I've looked for one periodically on Argos/Currys/ShopTo and haven't seen stock. Although I don't really need one right now as I still have my original PS5. But it's mental that the base PS5 sales are 80/20 physical/digital yet no additional stock was made available for the Pro's launch, even if they'd shipped enough drives to cover 60% of the Pro pre-orders we'd be in a much better place than now (although, because my brain works like this, I'd have supplied 1 to 1 so as not to piss anyone off). I imagine it's one of those things that not very many were selling (because most people will go for the simpler in-box option) and suspect Sony hoped a lot of us would give up and start buying our games digitally, which is legally dubious.
@PopSmoke79 I heard that too, but was busy and didn't get around to checking til the afternoon, by which time they were clearly gone. There's a part of me that hopes there's another stock drop soon, and a big one at that, just to stab all the scalpers in the eye. Not that I'm bitter or anything. (seriously, I'm not. Just don't like scalpers)
@Tatarimokke dude..
Very have the pro and disc drive. £800 - if you can get someone to sign up as new customer you can get 20% off (£640) and get 12months interest free.
The 20% also works on games.
@Tatarimokke thanks for letting me know, glad I helped. Enjoy.
@riceNpea Ain’t that the truth. And I also didn’t factor into the cost of the PS5 Pro the fact I would go on a “pro” game spending spree. Alan Wake 2, Hogwarts Legacy, Final Fantasy XVI, Resident Evil 4, Lords of the Fallen all purchased… though discs made some of those a lot of those cheaper. FFXVI for £15, LotFallen £13 etc. Now to find time..
I bought one the day after the Pro was announced when I saw the first article here about sales of the drive exploding. I didn't want to be caught on the hop by scalper ******** again.
I regret nothing.
It was easier to install than expected too.
@Shepherd_Tallon
Shall be installing my disc drive to my Pro when arrives tomorrow from Currys UK.
What’s the issue.
The games that I wait for are the ones that I buy from the store. I usually save the space for the games in the PlayStation catalog or if it’s a discounted game I’d get digital.
Their excuse for not having one on the Pro was the expense. Saying that a lot of companies don’t make them anymore. I think it will be a mistake if they make the next console all digital with the disc drive sold separately.
I got mine from Very. Used the Hot Stock app and set up an alert. It pinged me when there was stock and went on and bought it. Have to be quick though. It does also provide data of when it was last in stock with various retailers so you get an idea. Worth a try for everyone still looking in UK.
It's overpriced at £100. It's easily a £40 part.
@davebaby i got my Pro and disc drive in a bundle from Very. As a new customer I signed up for the credit account and got 20% off.
So the whole bundle worked out at £635 instead of £800 and the best part was I paid cash and didn't use the Very (pun intended) expensive credit account.
I'm glad I decided to order a disc drive back in September when the PS5 Pro was announced.
I finally got my Pro yesterday, so I'm all set.
Although I'm pretty sure it's easier to find a disc drive here in the US for retail. Hopefully, everyone who's looking for one finds it soon without paying scalpers.
Ended up buying a Slim with a discount, remove the drive and selling it for cheaper, and surprisingly it costed me less than buying the drive separately.
Im sure your local scalper has some in stock
I’m a physical media guy and always have been. I wouldn’t even consider buying a product without the option for physical media until physical media itself goes the way of the Dodo. Thus part of the reason I don’t own a PS5 Pro, even if you can get the drive as an add-on.
@MattBoothDev That's a great deal! Unfortunately I'd used Very for other things in the past so couldnt take advantage of the offer. And agree its a totally overpriced add on.
I see a lot of people saying they were able to get the drive in the UK. I also known there was a point this month when you could "easily" (as long as you were actively looking for one) get one in the US.
Meanwhile EU got nothing for weeks. What the hell.
I'm slowly embracing digital and seeing some convenience there for me. However, I'm still not really ready to drop physical since I still own a lot of disc games that I'd rather not have to buy again.
In addition, I could embrace digital even more if Sony didn't charge more for digital games. Any game I'm shopping a deal for and don't want physically, the PSN store often charges more than other retailers for the physical edition, which just seems backwards.
For example, Armored Core 6, a game I'm interested in but in zero rush to play, and I also do not care one iota about owning the disc for has never ever been lower than $34.99 in the PSN store. Meanwhile both Walmart and Best Buy were just selling the physical copies for $19.99. You'd think for a digital copy with no case, no disc, Sony could match that, but no. And that's a pretty common theme with a lot of games.
So in short, I'm in the minority by slowly warming up to digital, but I still see a lot of issues and Sony isn't really making the transition easy for pretty much anyone with this nonsense.
I'd recommend having a look in your local Smyths. I went into one to pick up a few games and saw one on the back shelf. Website said there was none in stock, so you never know!
I don't have problems, I don't have PS5 PRO.
Sony has given their hardcore fans a LOT of excuses not to buy this thing
Yeah it’s pretty tragic really. But maybe it’s what Sony wanted as I ended up buying Rebirth again on digital just to continue it. Annoyed
I’ve gone all digital and have no idea where placed my detached drive a few months ago.
(got a white aftermarket cover plate for the more sleek / symmetrical look on my Slim)
Wouldn’t be an issue if it came permanently attached to all consoles without question
They should have made half the amount of pro consoles they made.
I got scalped from eBay had to pay double for a disc drive but makes the pro look much better.
Everyone knew this was going to happen when the disc less PS5 Pro was announced.
The scalpers will purchase all available stock for there payday
It took me 3 days of constantly responding as fast as possible to in-stock notifications using the Hot Stock app to finally land a drive for my Pro through GameStop. Such a headache.
It’s definitely a privileged problem, but it’s straight up ridiculous that the stock on drives is so low. It absolutely feels intentional on Sony’s part so that those that want a drive get complacent and buy a few digital games in the meantime. They’re conditioning us.
Didn’t work on me though. 90% of games I will always buy discs. For about $200 through GameStop I landed Alan Wake 2, Jedi Survivor, Spider-Man 2, Sekiro, Lies Of P, Star Wars Outlaws, and Hogwarts. It would have cost me twice as much, if not more, had I bought digital. And I will trade in all of these games for about half as much as I paid for them. In the end, it will have costed me a quarter of the price of buying digital, and I will have saved hundreds if not thousands over several years gaming.
Discs are a no brainer for me.
Maybe if people looked around instead of eBay, Amazon and some random asking hundreds for one. People are so stupid
it's not that sony was unprepared... the shortage is by DESIGN. sony prevented a heated backlash had it not released a disc drive at all, yet it purposely limited supply so that people would either lose interest in getting one, thereby being "forced" into a digital future, or at the very least, discouraged millions of people from paying for the upgrade at all seeing as how overpriced the drive is, even when it is not being scalped. sony will NOT manufacture enough drives to meet the demand in order to coerse people to play games the way SONY wants them to. it's time to stop finding excuses and see this for what it is. when the ps6 launches, the main SKU will NOT include a disc drive. perhaps sony will pull the same stunt by offering an optional drive that is severely in short supply if only to avoid a PR disaster by not doing so. by the time the ps6 pro comes around, no drive will be offered. the ps7 will simply not have a drive period. by then, it is likely that backwards compatibility will be thrown out the window anyways and they will be selling people the same remasteres from 3 console gens ago at full price exclusively on PSN :S. my advice: embrace retro gaming and indie games... the grass is so much greener on this side
Your following sentence makes absolutely no sense. If Sony wanted to do what you’re suggesting, they would have done it with the much more popular PS5 Slim, not the Pro.
"The problem is, Sony doesn’t really want you to buy physical. It’s been less aggressive than its rivals at phasing out its retail presence, but make no mistake, it’d rather you shop on the PS Store. That’s one reason why the PS5 Pro comes without a disc drive."
@trev666 nice sarcasm
@Veritas7Ax it's even more pronounced in the UK, as Sony don't allow digital codes to be sold in retailers, so they're the only place to buy digital games. They have a monopoly.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is £40-£50 on Amazon pro m pretty much all the time. When not on sale, that's £70 on PSN.
This could be a corporate manipulated shortage so don't expect prices to drop any time soon.
It is almost like they're doing it on purpose......
I was browsing the ps store black Friday sale a few mornings ago and the prices weren't even half decent, went on ps direct and the drive happened to be in stock so picked it up, sometimes you win.
I've got an interesting way of fixing this why not ship a disc drive with the console
@Porco What format are these retro and indie games available on that we should embrace?
CEX has pushed the price up to £170 for pre owned. It's not really surprising they have jumped on this bandwagon. Good trade in price though.... shame I traded mine in before the sell out as I'd never use it and now regretting not keeping it >
Ordered when pro announced, still no sign of it out for delivery.
I managed to get a currys bundle late last night. No disc drives on their own if you want just that
Here's me thinking I was the only one who wanted the PS5 Pro 😂
@MattBoothDev
Late reply from me but thanks for letting me know about that. Yeah definitely a monopoly kind of practice like you said. So Sony can do a tiny bit of gouging and that really stinks UK gamers get an even shorter end of the stick as a result.
Consumers often get screwed over one way or another. Only thing that changes usually is the “how”.
