A publisher as big as Ubisoft always has a lot on the go at once, much of which is known, so it's always interesting to hear about something we weren't expecting. In a new report from Insider Gaming, it seems the company is hard at work on a game called Alterra.
Citing anonymous sources, the site claims the game shares much in common with Nintendo's Animal Crossing — each player has a home island inhabited by critters called Matterlings. You'll be able to visit other islands; each will be in a different biome and feature different Matterlings, resources, enemies, and so on.
In a Minecraft-like twist, you'll also be able to mould your island to your liking using the materials you gather from various islands. "For example, if a player would like to create something out of snow and ice, they’d have to travel (by means unknown) to an ice world inhabited by snow-ice Matterlings," the report states.
The Matterlings are described as similarly proportioned to Funko figures, and take the form of various real and mythical animals.
Sources also tell that the game has been in production for about 18 months, led by creative director Patrick Redding at Ubisoft Montreal.
By the sound of it, and if we presume this is all accurate, Alterra could still be several years away, depending on the scope of the game. In principle, though, it seems like a neat idea, but obviously much will depend on how it plays and how it looks.

This will either never happen or won’t take off. Just zero chance.
Oh, Ubisoft. Five years ago we would have all been thrilled to see you try to make this game. Today, not so much. How about you try not to implode for now and deliver an AC game in February that won't cause a meltdown on the internet?
Of course they are 🤨
Ok but WHY though?
This is gonna bomb so hard.
No one:
Ubisoft: Everyone wants Splinter Cell, so let's make literally anything else.
AC/Stardew type game - check
Minecraft type building - check
Could do well....
But not with people here. Target audience should be 8 year olds.
Everyone want to build a forever game that costs very little to update and gets kids addicted to paying money for cosmetics. Gaming is headed in an absolutely dreadful direction
My son loves Minecraft and my daughter loves animal crossing. They would go nuts like N64kid if this ever happens.
OMGOMGOMG Tom Clancy's Animal Crossing is real! It's happening!!!1
I really hate the word Matterlings.
Of course they are... god I miss the days when they weren't a shambolic mess and following the pack with unreleased (and released) genre-cashing in flops.
Spark a bit of creativity people, you have about 3000 studios.
It's sad to see Ubisoft at this low. They're not just creatively bankrupt but a lot of their games are unpolished fill up with nasty MTX.
Replace the CEO and management could fix the situation. But there's still no update about the investor / shareholders who wants a new CEO...
I remember when Animal Crossing was about moving into and learning to integrate with a new community. It didn't need crafting or endless customization features.
The more I played the new one, the more disenchanted I became. I never even engaged with most of the seasonal events.
Soooo, Disney Dreamlight Valley? Although, I guess there’s no fighting in DDV, like Minecraft. I always forget about that…
Man Ubisoft is so lost.
@Ralizah My hatred of AnimalCraft is extreme. They literally destroyed the game's genre and made it a generic mobile-esque resource grinding game with daily cooldowns to support a hideous, pointless crafting game. Easily my biggest disappointment of the generation. I have more fondness for launch day CP2077 than for the complete nuclear obliteration of Animal Crossing.
I'll be shocked if the next AC isn't steeped in MTX. NH felt like the test run for mobile-ifying the series to milk it's massive casual player base.
