Koei Tecmo has released more details about Venus Vacation Prism: Dead or Alive Xtreme, the so-called romance release due out in Japan and Asia from 6th March. Remember, there are no plans to release this in the West right now, but the Asian version will feature English subtitles.
In truth, this is a far cry from the volleyball games of yore. It’s effectively an extremely well animated dating game, where you’ll chat with the featured girls and make dialogue decisions. Depending on the choices you select, you’ll reach different endings and outcomes.
A big feature of the gameplay loop here appears to be the photography aspect, which has Gran Turismo 7 levels of depth. You’ll have access to a full suite of DSLR-esque functions, including depth or field, contrast, and more. It also seems like you can temporarily pause time to capture intimate moments, like when a girl takes a sip of coffee.
One thing we noticed, despite the high quality character models, is that clothing still clips depending on your subject’s pose. This feels like a little bit of an oversight considering the emphasis on photography and realistic character models.
Of course, the game is unfinished, so maybe that’ll be fixed prior to release.
To be honest, we think we would have preferred the minigames of the previous Dead or Alive Xtreme games to what’s on offer here. Dating sims can be fun, but this seems like it’ll run out of steam quite fast. You can unlock new outfits by taking great pictures, but it doesn’t seem like there’s much more to the game beyond that.
Is there enough on offer here to convince you to give it a go? Practice your chat-up lines in the comments section below.

i wonder if it has 4 pages worth of dlc to buy for a 2 hour game
The DLC is gonna keep Tecmo alive for the next 10 years lmao.
I find it sooooooooooo ironic that when they finally made a DOA dating sim literally NONE of the iconic popular DOA girls are actually in it 😅. This is genuinely bizarre decision making lol
@Anguspuss Please, let’s not toss around such slanderous comments like 4 pages of dlc.
…it’ll be EIGHT pages of dlc. At launch. Can’t speak for two weeks after release, though.
So the clothing clips through the character models? I think I might have a solution for that…
Let them cook, is all I'm going to say....
@Keyblade-Dan I'm shocked myself. Ayane and Kasumi bare minimum unless they're still under 18 in the japanese version. But then Christie, Helena, Kokoro are still there lol. I hate how each game seems to have less characters. Maybe DLC?
Can’t wait to absolutely w*** myself silly to this - roll on March 2025.
>Visual novels can be fun, but this seems like it’ll run out of steam quite fast
Is Sammy getting "dating sim" and "visual novel" mixed up? Visual novels are, well, novels - but on a computer and with pictures and sometimes choices. This doesn't look like that.
I saw a YouTube video about the creator of this game not doing DLC or something like that. I didn’t watch the whole thing. Still odd that the main girls in DOA are not in this and I think I would prefer the mini games as well.
@Matroska Very similar sort of thing, though, right? You're just picking dialogue and influencing the outcome.
I would have have preferred dead or alive 7
@Keyblade-Dan Honoka is insanely popular
Already pre-ordered from Play Asia
@AndyKazama Yeah just Honoka (who to be honest I'm getting really tired of them pushing like crazy) Kasumi, Ayane, Momiji, Leifang, Kokoro, Tina, Hitomi, Rachel like where are they?
I'd buy a DLC of Homer Simpson saying "D'oh" as the camera shutter noise. 😂
A Photography simulator...., yes that's it, it's a photography simulator.
That's what I'll tell the misses if she catches me 'playing' it.
Cant get the image out of my head of incels playing this whilst listening to Nick Cave's Red Right Hand on Spotify.
@get2sammyb Dating sims tend to not have much of a story, if any, you just do daily stuff and basically level up affection. Usually pretty sandboxy. Visual novels are typically massive stories, again just a novel with pics of who's talking, like Fate/stay night (it's twice the length of Lord of the Rings, amazingly) that may have branching paths. I can see why there a crossover in some people's minds because a lot of VNs also have romance stuff.and waifus.
Awsome cant wait to sit down with the wife and kids and get stuck in to this one....
@Matroska Touche! I changed the language as you're right, I guess visual novels usually don't have animated characters quite like this.
@Keyblade-Dan Looked it up, this one's surprisingly a sequel to ANOTHER Asia exclusive DoA dating sim. The original had 9 initial characters which included most of the DoA mainstays, then DLC added an additional 20 so I wouldn't be surprised if the same happens here. Prepare to shell out extra for Kasumi I guess.
@Keyblade-Dan the issues for most comes from the fact we didn’t get the original Venus Vacation on Steam because we cannot easily. I’m sure if we did, people would be happier with the picks.
TBH I’m okay with them. Honoka is my favourite DOA fighter. Some of the rest I’m familiar with too.
In terms of OG cast. I’d want Ayane.
@AndyKazama
Both of them!
@rjejr or his infamous unedited "sweet, sweet can" clip from the news broadcast 🤣
Doing more research, the original Venus Vacation is free (Koei Tecmo free aka riddled with additional purchases) and has native English supported as well. If you're willing to jump through some VPN hoops to get past Steam's region lock you can play it no problem.
Please sell enough to bankroll another NG game.
