The announcement of Elden Ring: Nightreign will have caught many FromSoftware fans, especially as the studio wasn't really expected to have any news to share having put out Shadow of the Erdtree earlier this year. It did, however: a co-op game for up to three players that uses the frameworks of Elden Ring for a different kind of experience. Over on IGN, the outlet was able to play the game ahead of the reveal and interview game director Junya Ishizaki.
What FromSoftware is trying to do with Nightreign is take all of those elements you associate with Elden Ring and try to condense them into a "shorter, tighter play session". It's like playing Elden Ring in co-op at a much quicker pace. Here is how IGN puts it:
"You squad up with two other players at the start of each round, get dropped into a densely-packed alternate reality chunk of Limgrave that has both its enemy types and the placements of its castles and forts randomly shuffled around at the beginning of each session, and it's up to you and your squadmates to build up from your lowly level-one character status as fast as possible by harvesting runes and weapons as you slash and dash through every enemy-filled camp and castle that you come across."
Here's how a play session in Elden Ring: Nightreign goes:
- Nightreign is structured around a three-day cycle, with each day lasting 15 minutes
- During the daytime of the first day, you can choose to go wherever you like
- As night approaches, where you can go becomes restricted as acid rain closes in on you like a Battle Royale circle
- When the circle is at its smallest, you enter a random boss fight, including both old and new foes
- This process repeats for the second and third day
- There are 8 distinct characters to play as that all have clear strengths and weaknesses
- Each character has a unique skill and ultimate attack that operate on cooldown meters
- If you die, your teammates can revive you by attacking you
- In between rounds, you go to the Roundtable Hold
- In the Roundtable Hold, you can spend a currency called Murk on emotes and skins
- Relics offer permanent upgrades to your characters, and you slot up to three in your loadout
Those last few bullet points may make Elden Ring: Nightreign sound like a live-service effort, but it's explained that just buying the game gets you access to the "complete package". There aren't any Battle Passes or microtransactions, and you can actually play the game in single player and offline.

Glad to hear you can play it single player and offline. Though if it's specifically designed around co-op it will be interesting to see how well this pans out.
"There aren't any battle passes or microtransactions" that right there is a huge W.
This is a cool idea but not really something for me. Probably the first From game I will be skipping in a long time
As someone who's been playing Souls since Demon's Souls, this sounds awful.
Its a novel idea, but I am not sold on it yet. I want to see way more info on how it plays for single player with scaling, ai summons as I cba with the multiplayer aspect.
It will also be interesting to see the price as I feel this should be in the £30 - £40 region but I reckon it will be higher.
I give FromSoft credit for making it a standalone package. I would absolutely loathe the idea of FromSoft shoehorning this predominantly multiplayer affair (and whatever terrible trophies it may have) into the main Elden Ring trophy list. This (Nightreign) is not what I signed up for, and now I can try it on an alt account without the onus of a butchered trophy percentage hanging over my head.
I really liked Elden Ring but this absolutely does not sound like my type of game sadly
Fairplay for trying something different, there's the makings of an interesting idea there for sure and they seem to be going about it the right way In not trying to monetise every aspect of it but doesn't sound too appealing to me right now. Not completely out just yet purely because it's fromsoft but will need convincing and expecting to skip this.
Sounds like an interesting idea. Should be great fun with the right team.
I don’t know if it’s for me, but sounds like an objectively unique take on the souls formula. Hopefully it pans out for them.
Sounds like the best way to do something like this, however that said, it's just not something I'm into. Probably the first FromSoftware title I'll be passing on.
Day one buy for me.
The concept is interesting, but I’m afraid it will become repetitive over time. It sounds more like a casual mobile game than a PS5 experience. But at least, From Software is trying to innovate and they still respect players by not falling in the micro transactions stuff and GaaS. Note that this game is not made by Miyazaki, so I guess he let another designer to explore ideas based on his creation, which is also a great move.
I'll be skipping this one.
Cool for those who want the "Best of Souls" co-op boss battle experience, but I prefer the grand adventures over lather, rinse, repeat gameplay loops.
The more I read about it the less interested I got.
A bunch of reused assets? 45 min gameplay on repeat with just some enemy variation?
Where's the exploration and discovery and adventure that makes Souls games unique and enjoyable??
I'm sure it'll be fun but I don't have it in me to go back to elden ring anymore. Would have preferred a Sekiro or AC dlc.
The concept has me curious and there's a good chance I'd give it a try, but my gut reaction is similar to most that I've seen so far. This isn't really the gameplay experience I'm looking for from FromSoft.
This is such an odd left turn for Fromsoft...but I kinda dig it! Consider me intrigued.
This sounds like a half assed cash in
Sounds like a desperate attempt from Bandai Namco to a ring a little more money out of FromSoftware before they're owned by Sony.
That said, the mobility options in the trailer do have my attention.
I'm probably going to skip this and wait for Dark Souls IV, BloodBorne II or whatever souls is next
I don’t often play online multiplayer games because I’m not a huge fan of shooting games. The exception being Helldivers 2 which I played a ton of with friends and loved for the first couple of months it was out.
This sounds like the perfect game for me - I love from software games so putting that world and game mechanics into something I can play with friends sounds amazing.
I'm skeptical but I'll give it a go
As much of a souls fan I am this one's not for me. A live service elden ring? No thanks and I have warhammer 40k darktide and helldivers 2 to scratch my co-op itch..I hope those that buy it enjoy the heck out of it.
@MrPeanutbutterz As someone who's been playing Souls since Demon's Souls, this sounds pretty neat! A change in gameplay structure in a sort of roguelite fashion without the need for mods or new profiles. I'll be keeping an eye on it 😎
Sounds like the single player is in for a Remnant 2 experience, where enemy groups still attack en masse, bosses are still made for 3 players and there isn’t enough time to gain power as a single player.
Eh this doesn't sound like a good enough game on its own unless it's packed with content. I know it says in a randomly shuffled limgrave but hopefully that's not the only area. And hope there's a good balance of new mobs and what I already fought thousands of time in elder ring and its dlc
If there was ever a need for an open beta, it's for this
A small project in an existing game world... sounds like the idea proving ground for newer developers and devs trying out new roles. I'll be all over it, wonder if we'll finally find out who the gloam eyed queen is!
That sounds terrible
Can we just get Dark Souls 4? Bloodborne 2? Or Demon's Souls 2?
Big fan, I think this sounds great. If it's $40-50 and included EVERY souls boss then I will camp outside of GameStop for a month to buy this. Roguelite co op souls battle royale sounds dope as hell, and I never play battle royale.
@Stragen8 Well when you consider that's not was this game is trying to be, that's not really a valid criticism is it? If it was billed as the next main entry in From Soulslikes then I'd agree. This is clearly an experimental side game.spin off which has been pitched by a younger director, it's not Miyazakis next game. FROM are working on multiple games. Not all of their game have to be like that.
Sounds great to me, the usual dooming and glooming from some folk in here. Fair enough if you don't like the concept, but it's not meant to be a soulslike, it's a different type of game with The Elden Ring branding. One to be judged on it's own merits on release, not to cry about cos it doesn't align with your tastes. FROM are working on their next big game and we won't be seeing that for a long time.
@breakneck Why is that even a problem? Most companies are 5 years between games these days, and if the game is good, who cares? Honestly with the 'fanboi' chat as well. People can like things without being criticised because you don't.
Honestly man, kneejerk reactions like this is gonna be FROMS only game for years and years. Fair enough to everyone who say it doesn't sound like its for them btw, that's fair, unfair to criticise FROM in my opinion though. Judge things on what they try to be, not what you think they should
It's not a live service game, you can play it offline, and single player. OMG! What are people going to complain about?!? Oh yeah, they'll just make up some dumb mindless drivel like "I'll be sitting this one out." or "This looks terrible." and and offer no explanation as to their reasoning because they just need to complain.
Not a game for me, but I applaud them for trying something different.
So, it's like a souls like rogue like. Not sure if I like it.
So... this is going to be F2P? I mean, it would have to be right? Also, what is the purpose in playing?... what do the permanent upgrades give you - if you're playing the same random sequences - is there some form of squad-leveling being done?
I think for me Elden Ring isn't a mad-dash-for-cash loot game; so I don't know how engaging it would be. I mean, some of the most annoying parts of the game are when you have to grind for runes; and that seems to be pretty well the entirety of Nightreign - barring a random boss-fight at the end.
Then again - they mixed up the formula with Elden Ring, so perhaps it will work?
I love it, I wish we would see more smaller games from big studios in between their bigger titles
It sounds like a rouge-like. I'll definitely be getting it playing solo.
Just feels like they are milking it at this point. Almost a disservice to elden ring merely to further capitalize off of its fame.
As has been the case with nearly all Fromsoft fair post dark souls; it will get rave reviews despite its shortcomings that often are criticized in other games. Even so I doubt I will jump into a fortnite style time sensitivity mechanic within Co-op focused rogue like spinoff of this IP and it's very aged hand me down engine.
I really wish from soft would take the boatloads of money they made from Elden ring and Shadow of their tree likely and actually invest in upgrading the technical front of their operation and perhaps the development process as a whole.
Hard pass on this one, but I appreciate what they’re trying to do here, in terms of taking the co-op experience to its logical conclusion. But this is clearly about the combat, and missing the exploration and mystery that I look to From to experience. I really hope that we get a new IP or something a bit more innovative for the next release. Elden Ring was great, but I’m ready for something new that’s not Souls 2.0.
No invasions? Not interested.
Sounds interesting, might be worth looking at if Consort Radahn didn't make you want to never touch a souls game again lol.
I'm certainly not going to write this off until we understand more... but initially I'm a little disappointed that From is going down this route, as it reeks a little bit of 'trend chasing'.
IMO, From have always been a great example of an 'identity-based' studio - very confident in their output, which has a distinct feel and a core audience.
With Elden Ring (base game) I thought they did a brilliant job in walking a tough line - managing to appease the hardcore fans, whilst onboarding newcomers to the genre.
However - Nightreign seems like they are wanting to ride the wave of recent successes like Helldivers/SpaceMarine etc (with even a bit of a MH flavour...).
I appreciate that Miyazaki has farmed this one out to a protege, assumedly whilst the former works on the next 'mainline' From game, but nonetheless this just doesn't feel right to me.
I honestly hope I am pleasantly surprised, but this to me is not From's wheelhouse.... and my expectations are well and truly tempered.
NB. - What I would have loved to have seen instead = FromSoft working to patch in their own native/official version of the 'seamless co-op' online mod, allowing for cross-play also if possible. I think that would have landed spectacularly with audiences, especially considering how popular the mod is with PC players.
This kind of sounds like Elden Ring and the Tower of Sisyphus from Returnal mashed up to me. Hmm.... 🤔
Well that's one way to crush my excitement oh well. Hopefully those that'll be playing it have fun
If a secondary team at From Software was in charge of this "spinoff", i've got nothing against it.
But if this is what they (as a studio) are mainly concentrating on for the next year or so... it's very disappointing.
I get that they're trying to adapt the Souls formula to various game genre, but they should stop milking Elden Ring already... The main game was already the IP's peak, and it's DLC started pushing it slowly on a downward path. Any other iteration will only drag it further down...
Whilst this sounds like a fun idea, i just get the feeling it isn't going to be up there with Froms usual output. Nor will it be remembered as such.
But it does sound different, and different can be groundbreaking. We will see.
Really wish they'd just remaster Bloodborne as aren't interested in this nor the previous expansion. Or a new IP entirely?
