What good is a railway sim without Thomas and Friends? Well, to be fair, we’d never actually considered the Mattel franchise coming to Train Sim World 5, but that’s exactly what developer Dovetail is plotting for the new year.
This slightly different add-on pack will be a narrative-based experience featuring Thomas, Diesel, and the Troublesome Trucks. So, while it’ll still unfold on-rails, you can look forward to a slightly different escapade should you decide to snap this up.
In the interview video below, Mattel’s senior creative executive producer Ian McCue shares a little about his role working on Thomas and Friends, while Train Sim World executive producer Matt Peddlesden digs into a few details about what we can expect from the update:
Has this convinced you to give Train Sim World 5 a spin at all? Will you choo-choo-choose this expansion pack? Let us know in the comments section below.

I'm not by any means going to play it as I'm not interested in trains really in the slightest. However, as a kid who grew up watching Thomas the Tank Engine, this is a really cool update and it's good to see Thomas & Friends still getting love these days.
Classic Thomas the Tank Engine means a great deal to me, so this is really cool to see. It's so odd to see him in a video game not as a fan-made mod.
The holiday sale price and my contractual obligation to buy train related things as a toddler dad has finally pushed this out of my wishlist and into my cart.
@Amnesiac Glad I'm not the only one! Since a Santa express the other weekend my toddler has been absolutely train crazy
I wonder if you’ll hear his mate screaming from within the walled up tunnel as you rattle past.
I have no interest in train simulation games, however i just wanted to say I loved Thomas the tank engine as a Child and remember having Thomas the Tank engine bedding lol. Has nothing to do with having the same name though 🤔 😂
This will be a bit too tame after his 'cameo' in skyrim!
Can't wait to see someone mod Thomas the Tank Engine into this game 🤣
How has there never been a biggish budet Thomas game????? How!?
Is this now my life's obsession to bring it about?
Maybe!
The header phrasing briefly sent my mind towards Choo Choo Charles instead.😅
@TurboTom I too, had Thomas the Tank Engine bedding. A duvet cover and pillow case. I can picture it in my mind. Good times.
@PorkChopExpress
That's cool, thinking about it now I loved Postman Pat too. I would actually play that If a Postman pat game was made 🤔 could be more fun than Death Stranding too 😂
@TurboTom Heck, I'd play both. Provided they remained true to the original style and writing. Bit of trivia, Greendale where Postman Pat is set, is based on Longsleddale, only about 20 minutes from where I grew up.
It might well be more fun than DS. I like Kojima because he's one of a kind, but he needs Konami as much as they need him. He has no idea how to edit himself.
Indeed, if you do actually like the idea of being a postie, there's a game called Lake which actually isn't too bad. There's a little story and it's not too long, but it's essentially delivering things around a village. Alternatively on the delivery scale, there's Snowrunner which I've put more hours into than I'd like to admit. It's more a physics simulator than anything with no story, but I just enjoy delivering giant things across wild terrain with big trucks.
@PorkChopExpress
Yeah i think it could definitely work as indie type of game, and with today's graphics it would probably look the the original series too.
Yeah joking aside I really like Kojima games too. Metal Gear solid 3 was my favourite, and I'm looking forward to the remake. I did like playing DS, just couldn't be bothered to finish it to be honest. Might try it again with the ps5 upgrade before playing the sequel, just hope it's not too wierd though lol
Cheers for the recommendations, will keep a look out for them.
I am so hyped for this one, I'm a big Train Sim and Thomas fan so this feels like it was made for me.
