PlatinumGame's once cult-hit NieR: Automata has, since releasing in 2017, become a commercial success, in any way you cut it. Still fondly remembered and with no sequel or successor in sight, publisher Square Enix has revealed that the philosophical action game has passed the impressive 9 million copies sold mark.
Considering it took around 10 months to move the first million (and that across PS4, Xbox One, and PC), constant praise and admiration for auteur creator Yoko Taro on social media and forums ever since have allowed for an impressive number of lifetime sales (thanks, Gematsu). A Game of the YoRHa Edition followed in 2019, and with the release of a Switch version in 2022, the series had shipped over 7 million physical and digital copies. A collaboration with Stellar Blade in 2024 kept the franchise in the public conscience and undoubtedly accounted for some additional Automata sales.
How many times have you purchased NieR: Automata across platforms in the past seven years? In the comments section below, reflect on the fact that some games are growers and not immediate showers.

A game that redefined what a video game could be. Modern art. This game is always in my conscience. Nier is life.
Now... time for the next game to make an appearance 🥹
My fellow gooners never disappoint.
The game Stellar Blade wishes it was but never will be. Automata is easily one of the best games ever made and the 3rd act is still one hell of a gutpunch.
Good game. Played it. Finished it. OVERRATED!!!
SE president will come out say this game missed out the 100 mill target sales 🤭
Joke aside. I bought the PS4 steelcase edition on day 1 and i don't have any regret. Definitely one of the best RPG i ever played.
I want more Nier which i hope next year Yoko Taro will announce a new one.
Amazing game, well deserved sucess! One of those experiences I wish I could forget so that I could do it all over again.
Loved it but Replicant is still the better game and it hits harder if you played Replicant first too. Please remaster the Drakengard games and make a new Nier already
I liked Nier Replicant way more than Automata. For some reason Automata just bored me, and I couldn’t bring myself to play it past the first ending.
I just started playing this a week ago as it was on the PS sale and can't believe I missed it the first time around. It's incredible.
@AhmadSumadi yes i thought it was massively overrated. fine but honestly dont know what the fuss was about
and to this day the PS version runs like dog *****. like pretty much all SE games.
Still a completely absurd game in concept, a game that doesn’t really get going story-wise until you complete the 40-ish hour prologue twice and opens with an hour long boss rush without a save point.
But that third playthrough puts everything into focus, and then pummels you relentlessly with spellbinding drama, tragedy and existential ideas.
Plus you get to run around as a maid and a bishi twink in a great fun action RPG in between, and occasionally a mech suit
I love it, still listen to the music regulary~
Three times. PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch prolly PC at some point in the future. I will ‘overly’ support games close to my heart. Call Nier Automata what it is… an Epic Masterpiece. I knew from playing thru the PS4 demo three times after it dropped that I’d love the game and it far exceeded the level of greatness I thought it’d have achieved. Plus the soundtrack is phenomenal as well and I still listen to it frequently and IMHO is the greatest game soundtrack of all time.
@PuppetMaster
'Not Call of Duty numbers, this is a fail.' Seems to be what the suits at SE say every time.
So...uh...has this finally met Square Enix sales expectations?
Asking for a friend.
Just shows, if you make a good single player game, it will sell, sell and sell some more.
Much better then the flash in a pan multiplayer, GaaS etc half baked rubbish that again seems to still be the focus of many a marketing board.
I would not say that Replicant is better than Automata, but for sure the story of Automata is barely understandable without knowing the events in Replicant. My first play through was just “wtf is going on?”, but replaying the game after completing Replicant, then everything makes sense, even why it ends like that.
@Futureshark nah. Plenty of good single player games that didn't sell, sell and sell some more.
Off the top of my head: Hi-Fi Rush.
@naruball weird argument to make. Almost as if your for single player games failing.
@RatmCky I think the point was just because it's a good single player game doesn't mean it will sell sell sell, hence the example. I didn't see anything that even remotely suggested they want single player games to fail 🤔
Also, 7 million copies over 7 years is good for what it is but in this day and age, nope pretty bad. You've got games selling a couple of mill in a week and these suits want the pennies...like...NOW!! not a decade later which is fair but on the flip, gaming gets stale.
Played it, not impressed, killing robots will always be boring in any game plus the game has pretty much been put on a pedestal by mainstreamers purely because of the character who looks like an adult doll or a character from the movie "eyes wide shut"
I bought it 3 times. The disc copy I have made my PS4 Pro sound like a jet engine so bought it digitally on Xbox. I then caved when I saw it dirt cheap on Switch. I think it was £10.
@meistergeister I completely agree with all of your points. The game is a work of art.
@Stale-Bread uh yea I think you misread. Try to stay positive bro. Too many negative people out here in the game space.
@Gamer83 Yeah. I had enough of SE suits and their unrealistic target sales.
I kinda wish Square didn't merge with Enix because this stupid not reaching 10 million target sales on day 1 was started when they merged with Enix.
With this game I had no idea what to expect having never been part of the fanbase of the previous games. It had the additional challenge of the hype....a wonderful game and holds a special place in my heart
Well good. It's a creative game. Didn't think it was a mind blowing masterpiece, but as an action rpg with some odd ideas here and there I had a good time with it and I'm glad a lot of other people gave it a chance.
@naruball it was trapped on xbox AND was a day 1 release on GamePass. Poor Hi-Fi Rush never stood a chance.
@arsmolinarc which goes to show that there are other factors that influence a game's success
