The update bringing a challenge mode, in-game maps, and new armour pieces revealed for Black Myth: Wukong earlier in the week has not actually gone live yet, but it's now received a patch itself to include PS5 Pro support. We now know the update goes live tomorrow, 14th December 2024, and works to improve the Quality and Balanced Modes in the title.
On PS5 Pro, you can expect the following once the patch has been downloaded:
- PS5 Pro now supports PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). By enabling it, you can achieve a high-definition visual experience by selecting either Quality or Balanced Mode in Settings.
- The system supports 120 Hz Output. When enabled in Balanced Mode, it maintains a stable 40 FPS output. If you encounter any visual anomalies, you can turn it off in PS5 Settings.
- Various scenes and boss fights have been optimized for better game performance.
- The stability of frame rates and visual clarity in both Balanced Mode and Quality Mode have been enhanced.
- The input response has been improved in Performance Mode.
The patch notes make note of how you can "enable" PSSR, which suggests the feature is a toggle rather than something that's mandated. With other titles like Silent Hill 2 and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora suffering from issues when PSSR is activated, this is a good sign that if Black Myth: Wukong has those problems too, you can turn it off straight away. Then, the framerate for both the Quality and Balanced Modes should be more stable while 120fps is supported for 4K TVs.
Will you test Black Myth: Wukong on PS5 Pro now it officially supports the console's features? Let us know in the comments below.

Yeeeeees! Literally was waiting for it to start playing, hopefully it isn’t a broken patch like some other games.
I have been playing it on PC. I should really see how well it plays now as the most recent patch supposedly improved Full RT performance.
I actually was getting really good performance thanks to playing in DLSS Balanced and utilizing Frame Generation (input latency with a controller felt great), but any extra native frames are always welcome!
I hope this PS5 Pro patch is a good one! I know there have been a few "duds" along the way, but time should hopefully iron things out as Sony trains PSSR to be more effective.
I called it Blacksmith WorkLong because those boss fight are like bashing chunks of wrought iron. I still go back for more scraps now and again.
Giving the poor native res i don't have hope for PSSR being good on this so i'm glad its a toggle rather then forced.
Oooh game changer. Ok I'm buying it on the next discount
What about 60fps mode upgrades - I only see a little bit of optimisation noted?
Changes to Quality/balanced modes are all well and good but a complete waste of time if it cant render a decent image at locked 60fps in a game like this.
@Atreus97 might not have to wait long, after Xmas sales etc, also the physical edition just got it's release today
It doesn't sound like much of a difference? No fidelity mode at 60fps?
@Danloki that Wo Long I finally beat Taotie late last night 😅 just put it on before bed out of the blue and got him the second go. Looked to me in YT vids they patched his 2nd phase to rush you faster but I can dust it back off now 🤙
@Danloki
@Danloki
Definitely not as hard as Elden Ring. There’s around 100 bosses and “maybe” 3 of em’ are up there in difficulty with the likes of Elden Rings toughest bosses.
Haven’t played Wo Long so I’m unable to give you an informed answer on that one.
I stopped playing it a couple of months ago to wait for the inevitable Pro patch... I did not stop playing it because I found it too hard, honest!
This game was the sole reason I wanted to get a pro. Was first game ever I thought was unplayable to me. It made me sick to play it. Ff7 rebirth was close and this game put me over the top with getting a pro. Glad it finnaly is getting a pro patch
@Rich33 At first, I had the same thought. But note how they worded it:
"The input response has been improved in Performance Mode."
The performance mode is really bad on the base PS5 because it uses FSR3's frame generation, which adds a lot of input latency. Maybe they leveraged the extra GPU power on the Pro by simply removing frame gen, which could actually be pretty great considering what kind of game this is.
It remains to be seen how well it performs, though.
@Art_Vandelay
Good point - and if I remember, led to a lot of the visual 'mess'.
Guess we will have to wait for analysis.
I didnt buy because of the problems on base PS5 - it looked from videos and framerate analysis to be a real low effort mess on base PS5, and the article did not give me much hope, but maybe they will leverage the significant extra GPU for something meaningful!

Disclaimer: I have never played BMW, or the DLC for ER as neither fitted what was acceptable for me in terms of performance.
But in regards to Elden Ring - most bosses have exploitable weaknesses.
Even Malenia - I worked this one out myself and you dont see it online very much even now, but she seems to have real problems if you spam Ancient death rancor (I think thats the right one - the improved version of the black flaming skulls). It has a minor stun locking effect on her which is very useful, and distance to help avoid WfD. I consider myself pretty good on these games having beaten Nioh 2 including all dlc on NG+ and Lies of P, but no where near the level of some and I beat her in less than 10 attempts on NG+.
Does BMW have the same ability to exploit weaknesses if you get a boss thats really tricky for you?
@Rich33
I found Elden Ring to be by far the easiest FromSoft Soulslike game. I only really struggled with Malenia and the final boss in the DLC. But I got em both eventually lol. Some take longer than others of course due to just memorizing their movesets and finding the best strategy for em.
Black Myth Wukong is significantly easier than Elden Ring IMO. Had some of the best boss battles I’ve ever experienced gaming too. Loved it. Performance issues definitely need to be adequately patched though.
Yeah, Wukong definitely allows you to exploit powerful Bosses weaknesses.
@Rich33 Yep, performance mode is pretty bad on the base console. Anyway, the 40 fps mode at 120 Hz looks promising if you have a TV that supports it. Might be the sweet spot, potentially offering a more stable framerate and image quality. Also hoping the PSSR implementation is a good one, but I'm not holding my breath.
@Ricketyrascal87
Quite agree its the easiest overall, but there were some interesting difficulty spikes in it!
I was just a little surprised (and again please bear in mind I havent played it so I am not disagreeing), by how comparatively easy you made BMW sound, based purely on the large number of cases of 'too difficult to finish' I read.
@Rich33
There’s no blocking in BMW, so you’ve gotta become a dodge master. That makes for some serious “adrenaline rush go boom” boss encounters lol. I can see why some find it too hard though. Combat is lightning fast in a lot of the boss fights. Some are so intense you almost shake from the thrill of it afterward. I didn’t know what to expect from that game but man…it is a good time.
@Art_Vandelay
My TV can do 120hz for a 40fps mode, but I cannot...
Anything much less than 60fps (literally) gives me a headache and can make me feel sick (particularly if fast moving like this game), so im holding out hope for that performance mode!
@Ricketyrascal87
Sounds good - then I will hope they get that 60fps mode fixed on Pro!
@Rich33 True, this is very much a 60fps game.
My physical showing up tomorrow; perfect timing! I’ll be going for performance over graphics, so skipping the PSSR and hoping that the Pro delivers a solid >30fps framerate🤞🏼
Good news as long as they took their time and actually tested this sh*t. Can't believe so many game devs put in the "effort" to do a pro patch when the result was worse than base PS5 performance. I'm glad I never personally bought a pro but it still sucks for the hardcore fans who wanted a premium experience are kinda getting shafted
Robbie Williams monkey biopic clear
I have it on PC and it's a great game from what I've played, but it's too difficult for somebody who's as impatient and time pressed as me, I retired about two hours in. It's slick as hell on a decent PC aswell, hopefully the pro patch taps into some of that good stuff.
I think it’s a huge improvement in balanced mode, much sharper image and stable performance (granted, I am lucky enough to have VRR)
@Rich33
Exactly! Sigh!
Ffs.. In a game like this, the one mode where a Pro mode would really be of use is in the 60fps mode. You can obviously complete the game in 30 or 40 fps, if you like self torture or the extra challenge. But in a game like this every fps makes it all the sweeter. But instead they focus on the worse-fps modes?? 🫠 I want a big nice boost to performance mode..
@RamboMike
Yeah - looking online, early opinions of the performance mode are not fantastic - but I will wait for a proper, more professional analysis, before I make my mind up not to buy.
If they cant get a decent 60fps mode on Pro there is something seriously wrong here whether it be poor talent, poor decisions, poor engine, or a combination of these. I think its UE5, so thats already 1 problem, but I think LoF got a patch that fixes its 60fps mode, and thats UE5, so theres got to be something else. They know that 75% of people dont play at <60fps, so this is such a wasted opportunity.
Playing for the first time on a Pro with 120hz TV in performance mode, and the game plays super smooth, no input lag that I can detect, and looks fantastic. The balanced mode looks nice, but plays like stop-motion animation. So… performance all the way!
Strange they dropped the 60fps-stable mode at all. Wonder why, and I guess thats what majority would prefer aswell. Guess just gotta keep on waiting then.
