In what is essentially an update on previous reports, Sony has now confirmed that it's interested in acquiring fellow Japanese giant Kadokawa — the parent company of FromSoftware.
This is a story that's been rumbling on for weeks now, with Kadokawa itself revealing that Sony had sent an "initial letter of intent" back in November. At the time, Sony had nothing to say on the matter, and didn't release any kind of public statement.
However, Sony has just come out and admitted to its perceived plans for the first time. According to Yahoo! Japan, the most recent issue of Weekly Bunshun — a longstanding Japanese magazine — features a quote from a Sony representative.
It reads: "It is true that we have expressed our initial intentions [of acquiring Kadokawa]. We would appreciate it if we could refrain from commenting further."
With confirmation of the potential buyout now coming from both sides, it's possible that the deal has progressed behind the scenes — but until we get official word on what's going down, all we can do is speculate.
What do you think of this whole saga? Is the buyout inevitable? Wonder how things will play out in the comments section below.

It’s 90% sure it will happen as both companies want the deal done but they’re still setting the price.
I’m still not sure what to expect, we’ve seen nearly all gaming acquisitions gone wrong in some way, including some of Sony’s and this would be the biggest acquisition they’ve ever done for the entire group, not only gaming wise.
Sony has been trying to buy them for years, piece by piece, and are only now offering to buy all of it, so I feel like the “intention” has been known for a while now.

@Rodimusprime1313 what? It's nothing like that at all.
Oh yay... another billion souls clones to look forward to 🙄😄
@JustCameHereToSay what are you on about?
@ironcrow86 yeah because that's all that's going to happen isn't it? Ffs 🙄
Only thing i dont understand, arent these things supposed to be private? Why did Kadokawa announce Sony’s intent to buy? Doesn’t that potentially affect the acquisition negatively? Like shares increasing in value, thereby potentially jacking up the price too high for Sony?
Or is this just how these things go? Or are the talks much further along than we think, so it doesnt matter if they announce these things? Sorry for all the questions…
Alright, well unless some force majure topples this over, it's a done deal. Kadokawa wants to be bought exclusively by Sony, Sony has confirmed it wants to buy them.
Do it already big bad Sony. Ms got away with almost having a monopoly on games. Ninty is apparently getting away with having a monopoly on monster catching ball mechanics. Go get your oh so scary anime monopoly
Now we wait until the merger is accomplished. It will happen, since as mentioned in a previous comment, both companies are interested in the merger.
Huge move by Sony that I'm sure will pay dividends.
@Northern_munkey Ok - this last 15yrs we've had Demons Souls, Dark Souls Trilogy, Bloodborne and Elden Ring....All more or less the same game!! The only exception was Armoured Core 🙂
@LogicStrikesAgain your spot on, it should be private, but they didn't announce it, Bloomberg leaked that both parties were in discussion, it effected Kadokawa's stock prices, so they were obliged to be transperent about it to joe public.
People will flip over this, yet when MS did it, nobody batted an eye
@LogicStrikesAgain Kadokawa want to be bought so they wouldn't intentionally try to push Sony away.
It might be that they want to force their hand into making the buy sooner rather than later. Letting everyone know it's on the cards would definitely light a fire under Sony.
I'm just guessing btw.
Edit: Answer above from ThorsHammer is better than mine. I was under the impression that Kadokawa had leaked it.
@ironcrow86 they're not really souls clones if they're made by the inventor of souls games? You also forgot Sekiro which while it's still a difficult game, isn't really a traditional souls game
Twitter is full of tears right now about this deal. I don’t understand the same people crying about this deal had no problem with Microsoft buying up third party publishers left and right now that the rabbit got the gun they crying.
@JustCameHereToSay ok
@JustCameHereToSay I'll pass thanks.
I really don't want this acquisition to happen. It's bad news for everyone.
Sony just popped a rune arc and is currently buffing outside Kadokawa’s fog door
@ThorsHammer Oh yeah, that makes sense. But is that even allowed though? Can journalists just publicly announce or leak information about merger and acquisition talks? Doesnt that create an unfair advantage for people to buy Kadokawa stocks? It almost seems like crossing into insider trading territory.
They wouldn't have said anything if it wasn't practically done.
Elden ring tv show here we go
@JustCameHereToSay you have to admit they all look and play quite similar though?? I will credit Sekiro and Bloodborne - The gothic and samurai look respectively, make them stand out a bit more 🙂
@MidnightDragonDX Really??? No-one batted an eye???
Sony's monopoly of animé is worrying.
@__jamiie
It's not even close to having a monopoly. People throw that word around with not knowing what it means I think.
@__jamiie Let the regulatory bodies worry about that. If it really has a negative effect on competition we’ll likely hear from companies like Toei Animation. Just like companies like Sony, Google and Nvidia raised concern about the MS/Activision deal.
If this really ends up creating a monopoly, Japan’s strict anti trust laws will step in, and they will have to alter the deal, just like with Microsoft.
@MidnightDragonDX
You're either being sarcastic or were living on another planet for a while.
@Anthony_Daniels I know what a monopoly is. And Sony own the world's largest (by far) animé streaming service in Crunchyroll.
With everything that falls under that umbrella, everything from Funimation and with this potential buyout, it will leave Sony in a monopolistic position.
Just because there are other search engines doesn't mean Google doesn't have a monopoly in that market.
A LOT more negative talk went around about ms buying Activision (rightly so) I don't see this purchase overwhelmingly affecting the gaming world.
As for the anime world well 80% of crunchy roll anime are mid and of the remaining 20% lately the 'better' anime have been releasing elsewhere as well. Some of the biggest rated anime lately even being exclusive elsewhere. I.e. Oshi no KO.
@__jamiie I dont think you fully understand what a monopoly is. Maybe you’re thinking of having a dominant position in a market, but thats not a monopoly. A monipoly is when they exclusively hold all control of the industry, which is obviously not the case with so many different big players in the anime industry.
Now if they would create an anti competitive environment with this acquisition, then it will be faced with strict regulation.
Bloodborne remaster - then a remaster of the remaster five years later - confirmed.
@LogicStrikesAgain Monopoly - Market structure with a single firm dominating the market.
That's literally the dictionary definition.
@LogicStrikesAgain it falls under journalism, I mean if they had pure evidence that Kadokawa employee leaked the merger on purpose to drive stock up to increase sale, it could be insider trading...but considering both parties have been very delicutely assembling the deal for years, and Kadokawa has been the one pushing for Sony to buy everything instead of just %, the repercussions of the leak are that Sony might get priced out, or other buyers force a hostile takeover (which is the rumored reason for their deisire to sell out in the first place) neither of which Kadokawa wants at all, so it's not to their advantage it leaked either.
I hope the deal goes through so the company can remain Japanese.
It’s crazy that Microsoft of all people were interested in buying them out. I’m sure they wanted their greasy hands on FromSoftware. I think Sony is a good buyer. They tend to do better not gutting the company. With Bungie they had a billion dollars just to retain the developers. Even though they laid off it wasn’t near as bad as Microsoft’s layoff with Bethesda and Activision employees.
Kadokawa had already stated they received a proposal, so yeah... it would be difficult to not be interested while making a proposal.
@ThorsHammer Yeah you’re right. I didnt mean to imply it was insider trading. I meant it in more of a public sort of way, where people are now trading because of knowledge they shouldnt have had prior. But yeah i get ya, it falls under journalism, which is a bit crazy to me. But it is what it is.
@GeeForce No comment.
@__jamiie From The Oxford English Dictionary: “The exclusive possession or control of the trade in a commodity, product, or service; the condition of having no competitor in one's trade or business”
A single firm with exclusive control of the industry, not just a dominant position. In this case there are plenty of big players competing in the anime industry, so its not a true monopoly.
So they can shutter great studios but push for this. Lovely.
Hopefully it doesn't happen
@ironcrow86 And you arrived at that conclusion how, exactly?
@nessisonett Ah, you mean like the studio behind the biggest flop in gaming of all time? It's definitely frustrating when studios are shut down, but new acquisitions have nothing to do with looking backward. Many of the studios they have acquired have flourished. You cant fault them for making business decisions, especially when the studio they closed was unsuccesfull.
Most of the studios they bought, havent been shuttered, so I dont see how that ties into all of this.
@__jamiie
So no Sony don't have a monopoly on anime at all
What you actually mean is Sony have a monopoly on Western distribution of anime. Very big difference between distribution and ownership.
Which they've had ever since purchasing CR
Sony own very few anime ip and even less studios
After this take over it will jump to around 30 percent of anime and manga ownership
Hardly a monopoly is it? Kadokawa hardly the only big anime and book publisher in Japan.
Toei, Kodansha, Shogakukan - those are giants that own the the likes of my hero academia, attack on Titan, demon slayer
Let's also not forget Amazon and Netflix that are investing huge in the industry for their services
Neon Genesis, and Gundam probably the biggest manga ip Sony get out of this, or maybe delicious in dungeon which decent . The rest u probably never heard of
People keep coming out with that monopoly nonsense probably because some YouTuber said it without knowing very little about that industry.
In western layman's terms it's more like Sony pictures buying universal studios. No one would be screaming monopoly because they Own fast and furious, Jurassic Park and a bunch of lesser ip.
The more you know!
@MrPeanutbutterz paying attention to things did a lot of heavy lifting there
@__jamiie
Sony does not own a monopoly because the anime industry in Japan is basically composed of joint ventures.
A committee is responsible for making an anime and members of said committee can't do more than one task.
If Sony buys Kadokawa means that they could act as either the IP holder, music producer, distributor in Japan or distributor overseas, but they have to chose one of those.
@LogicStrikesAgain Literally what are you talking about. FlopStrikesAgain.
@nessisonett Literally you cant figure it out?
And uh… Good one!? 😆
@__jamiie "Market structure with a single firm dominating the market"
Sony clearly doesn't fit with that description and currently no one dominating anime market.
I mean, Sony doesn't own Sunrise, Madhouse, Toei, Production I.G., Mappa, J.C Staff, Studio Ghibli, Studio Pierrot, etc etc. Anime that came out from those studios are published / aired pretty much everywhere.
What Sony own is Aniplex with A-1 pictures and Crunchyroll under their subsidiary. Even if Sony acquired Kodansha, their position in anime market will not change much considering Netflix, Amazon, and Disney+ have bigger subs than Crunchyroll.
@Anthony_Daniels "Neon Genesis, and Gundam probably the biggest manga ip Sony get out of this, or maybe delicious in dungeon which decen"
I believe Evangelion and Gundam mangas are published by Shogakukan and Kadokawa in Japan and VIZ Media in the west.
Some of Kodansha well known manga are Hajime no Ippo, Blue Lock, Vinland Saga, Rent A Girlfriend, The Seven Deadly Sins, Tokyo Revengers, A Silent Voice, Fairy Tail, The Quintessential Quintuplets, Air Gear, or School Rumble.
i feel like its going to happen , and its going to happen soon. what does this mean for fromsoftware , i guess we'll find out. maybe they can revisit demon souls or lets say the word , bloodborne.
@ironcrow86 Yeah sorry bud, I'm not perpetually online or following gaming news. So tell me - how did you arrive at that conclusion?
