Sony Pictures Seemingly Done with Terrible Spider-Man Spin-Off Flicks

The "SSU" does not seem long for this world

It looks like PlayStation's parent is done with Spider-Man spin-off films, which is probably for the best. We just learned that Sony's Spider-Man Universe is known as the "SSU" for short, comprising those almost universally-panned film and television spin-off projects, like Venom, Morbius, and the disastrous Madame Web. The upcoming Kraven the Hunter is seemingly set to plumb awful new depths.

Well, the good news is Sony is aware of the fact, and according to an anonymous talent agent speaking to The Wrap (thanks, IGN), the company has "developed what they want to develop for now". The firm will instead bet on a sure thing, focusing on the golden goose that is Tom Holland, the next proper Spider-Man film with Marvel Studios, and the inevitable sequel to its Uncharted adaptation, featuring Mark Wahlberg as Victor Sullivan.

Tom Holland was miscast in the Uncharted movie. He makes a fine Peter Parker, but he’s no Nathan Drake. Too young, too immature (in the context of what is supposed to be a worldly wise globetrotting adventurer) and not the right build. They didn’t even have to look far for a better pick, Marky Mark would have made a superior Drake.

The lack of competition in the comic book movie space kind of makes me sad. I wish there were better alternatives to the multiverse stuff marvel is doing right now. I kind of miss Fox having the X-men license tbh. They weren't always the greatest movies, but I truly do love some of them. So I'm hoping James Gunn can right the DCU ship.

Venom is such a cool character and IP to have, the fact that they cant do anything interesting with it shows a lack of creativity. How about something like the revived Xmen animated show? The fact that they havent put Spidey and Venom together in a movie again is such a waste. Be better, Sony.

They should have just picked up Nathan Fillion and everyone else from the fan film on YouTube for Uncharted. Perfect.

I hope the next spider man film keeps the story a bit more down to earth - figuratively and literally, as imo they have not benefited from fitting in with the wider stories.

Tom Holland is a very good actor, and it would be good to just see him do a proper Spider man story again, that 1 doesnt have to clean up the mess from a previous film, or 2 doesnt create a mess that needs sorting out in a future film!

For what its worth - I thought he was good as ND, and as a big draw, he will hopefully keep numbers up for films I dont necessarily see doing well otherwise.

Out of all the SSU Spider-Man movies they made recently, Venom was probably the best one.

Tbh I did enjoy the first 2 (didn't see the third movie) as I found the 2 movies fun and entertaining to watch for the most part.

@Balaam_ @Coffeeglitch Both Nathan Fillion and Mark Wahlberg are unfortunately too old to play Nathan Drake… Sony is too busy thinking about how they can turn this into a long term franchise. Give Tom Holland age and current popularity… He was the best choice if they plan to make 5, 6, or 7 of these movies.

I dont even think the spiderman films have been any good since the first two Toby Maguire ones

The primary reason behind Sony Pictures churning out mediocre Spiderman films is because of a little known contract between Sony Pictures and Marvel, which was signed when Marvel was still struggling to gain a foothold on the movie business. Sony got the Spiderman IP and could retain it as long as they made a movie every x years. So that's what Sony did. Quality didn't matter since over time, the value of the Spiderman IP, along with other Marvel IP grew tremendously over the years. The cost of making mediocre filma was worth it to retain the valuable IP. This is also the reason why you didn't see any crossover between Spiderman and other Marvel characters, which is very odd, unless you know about this contract. I think Sony and Marvel renegotiated this contract so there may be crossoversnin the future and Sony is "released" from having to churn out mediocre Spiderman movies to retain the IP.

Sony need to focus on original movies. Fund exciting new talent. Less of the IP slop. But of course they’ll churn out sh*te adaptations of games over the next 10 years, that’s what we’re in for.

@nessisonett JC Chandor is a great director actually. I'm happy that Sony have already signed him for a smaller movie. Margin Call is maybe the best Wall Street movie of the last two decades. Also more rom-coms like the Sydney Sweeney movie and more lower budget thrillers like Equaliser.

@pepsilover2008 agree, but all everyone is trying is the superhero fluff. I'd love to see more adaptations of former vertigo comics, dark horse, etc...
