PlayStation Tournaments: XP has just been announced. It'll be the first-ever PlayStation Tournaments live event, and it's taking place in London on the 18th January.
Naturally, you'll have to win some online competitions to actually get there. Qualifiers begin today on PS5, with Tekken 8 and FC 25 tournaments. Then, starting from the 6th December, there'll be qualifiers for both Astro Bot and Fortnite.
For the full rundown on all of this qualification business, you can visit the official PlayStation Tournaments: XP website (good luck if you're actually thinking about participating).
Sony's been promoting its PlayStation Tournaments initiative for a while now, and plenty of third-party publishers have been keen to join in — if only to get their games some additional reach.
And to be fair, these online competitions do tend to attract an audience. PlayStation often livestreams specific tournaments on YouTube and Twitch, so it'll be interesting to see how hard it pushes this big live event in London.
"Qualifying players from across the globe and the competitive gaming community on PS5 will represent teams Triangle, Circle, Cross, and Square to earn points during the competition and vie for the title of champion, in addition to winning exclusive prizes," reads the PlayStation Blog.
Dare we ask if you'll take part in any of this? Have you tried any PlayStation Tournaments before? Book a trip to London in the comments section below.

Wish they would push a showcase lol
Am I just too old fashioned to understand the appeal of these things? Why do people care about who is good at a video game? Can’t we just play a game and enjoy it for ourselves? But that’s my take on all this new age junk.
@LavenderShroud E sports have caused a lot of damage to casual gaming. Everyone wants to make the next big tournament game just as everyone wants to make the next big live service.
Problem is, very, very few ever make it so that you end up with this pile of garbage that effectively pleases no one.
@LavenderShroud Most of us that will comment on this article are disconnected from this, but I think the demographic that plays Fortnite likes this.
I’m betting Pushsquare is getting more engagement and clicks from us complaining about current gaming trends than they do from us celebrating what we like these days!
They should have a tournament to see how long they can go without having a showcase.
@LavenderShroud why do you care so much about what other people enjoy that doesn't concern you? you criticize people for watching streams, & now you criticize people for playing video games with others online (basically). age has nothing to do with it, you're just being arrogant and conforming to the grumpy old man shtick.
just let people live, and do you.
I dunno, I’d rather they put effort into cultivating the grassroots than set up another big showy affair. Nintendo seemingly hate the scene so Sony have the opportunity to step in.
@LavenderShroud for the same reason people watch sports, movies and play videogames, because is part of our humanity to be fascinated with what we can't do in real life.
The fact that you can't do it doesn't mean that YOU can't or shouldn't enjoy stuff. You can play football with your friends and have the best time of your life. The fact that you will never play in the world cup can't take that from you.
I hope to god this über competitive spirit is not reflected in any forthcoming games’ trophy lists. The day I see ‘Place among the top 10 players globally in a level speedrun’ is when I drop this platform like it’s diseased and migrate permanently to PC.
" if only to get their games some additional reach". Sony makes these events to give the ps5 reach, everyone wins lol.
I'm surprised Sony didn't include SF6 considering the top popularity in Japan even surpass Fortnite and Apex. Or maybe they just don't want to mixed up with Capcom Pro Tour. I personaly would participate if they include SF6.
@LavenderShroud It's called competition and there's a prize (money) for the winners to give additional motivation. This is the same as sports tournament that already existed for centuries. Age has nothing to do with it and no one forced you to participate.
@somnambulance when do people in this site ever celebrate what they like?! Articles about a new, anticipated release get roughly 50+ comments. Articles about an upcoming (or failed/or successful) live service games get plastered with comments amazing 150+. Bitter a** bunch!
Edit: As I read what I wrote I realize I complain too much about complainers lol. This will be my final time doing so.
@nessisonett Cultivating the grassroots? I'm not sure what are you talking about here.
But Sony always been supportive for games with multiplayer that can be more popular with a competitive scenes. Like they've been held tournament for Gran Turismo called GT World Series since 2018 and the winners received certificate from FIA.
So it's nothing to do with Sony stepping in because Nintendo hating the scene. But it's more like Sony providing for their playerbase who loves competitive games.
@AhmadSumadi We’re a special community! Lol
To be frank, on the topic at hand, I do get the esports high. After all, I was the number one player in world for a game at one point in my life. Undisputed for probably a whole 20 minutes or so, knowing how these things work. On Hamster Arcade’s port of Yie Ar Kung Fu, I briefly topped the rankings. It doesn’t matter if I was like one or a dozen players, it felt great! I didn’t even need the Game Genie to get there like I did as a kid!
@PuppetMaster Yeah. But sports are sports and games are games. There’s a huge difference. I just play games for myself or with my brother. It’s not anybody’s business how good or awful we are at fighting or FPS games. We just have fun and I really don’t understand why there’s a need to make them into tournaments or anything. But maybe I’m just too old to understand. Whatever, I’ll stick with my JRPGs, Pokémon, and mobile games.
@LavenderShroud There's no rules that said games can't be competitive like sports. It's the same as there's no rules that said games can't be an art piece like painting or sculpture.
And games always has competitive side for decades. Example: there's a leaderboards of how fast you are in a racing game or your highest scores in shmup / beat em up. Heck, there's a speedrun competition of how fast people can finish a game.
For you, games is only for fun and relieve from stress. But for some gamers, games can also be competitive and a medium to test their skills against the others.
I play Splatoon competitively, so I’m not exactly the target audience for this, but GLHF and GGs to anyone from the site who may participate!
I've entered Guilty Gear -Strive- PlayStation tournaments before. Most PlayStation users still do not even know about this and even the ones that has heard about it, a lot don't know how to enter them. PlayStation needs to continue to find ways to make these known to everyone. Perhaps announce and show things more at game awards or on State of Plays more will help some. Heck use that twitter account that generates lots of views(and now on bluesky too) at least once a week. I know they just made a post about it on those but make it almost a routine thing.
Even though Street Fighter 6 technically has an in-game tournament you can participate in, I definitely feel like it should be added to this also.
I’ll never play in one but I don’t see the downside here. It gives games like Astrobot more of a shelf life which is awesome. As long as tourneys don’t become a staple in trophy lists, I say go for it a x have fun
What is this? How you you do these tournaments?
@LavenderShroud competition for the best players has always been a part of gaming. Look at the pac-man or Tetris championships in the 80s. As soon as online games appeared we competed against other players. It’s a bit like saying, why do people watch Premier League football? I just enjoy playing with my friends.
If you play Pokémon, JRPGs and mobile games, then it sounds like you’re not the target audience. For some gaming and competition is exciting.
I’m an older gamer myself, and can’t understand the appeal of mobile games or Pokémon.
A lot of people on this site play single player games and look down on competition.
@Saucymonk I’m not totally sure either but I’ve seen in EA FC an option to join a PlayStation tournament in-game, which is like a 16 player knockout that starts at regular intervals throughout the day. It might be connected to that.
