Wuthering Waves may look and sound a lot like Genshin Impact, but it’s stronger than the long-running HoYoverse favourite in a number of areas. The character action combat, in our opinion, is vastly superior – and the release has a pretty cool system where you absorb animals from around the world and can integrate their abilities into your moves.
The title’s coming to the PS5 on 2nd January, alongside its absolutely enormous v2.0 update. And it feels like the perfect time to start playing: you’ll be able to jump directly to the new storyline and Italian-inspired location Rinascita if you like, and there’ll be tons of onboarding to help get you and your characters up to speed.
More importantly, developer Kuro Games is giving away a ton of free pulls just for logging in, and you can earn more by completing events and working through the story.
The new environment, which is made up of eight biomes total, looks brilliant: the bulk of it takes place during Carnevale, while tensions rise between warring factions in the background. Open world traversal is being completely transformed here, allowing you to fly and ride on boats. You can even soar up waterfalls, making movement fast and fulfilling.
If you haven’t already been playing on mobile then there will be quite a lot to catch up on, even if you do jump forward directly to the v2.0 storyline, but we reckon you’ll have a great time. Wuthering Waves’ production values are off the charts, and while it does rely a little too heavily on proper nouns like all of these Chinese games, it’s well worth adding to your daily rotation of titles to play.

Cannot wait to try this one! If anybody's not tried INFINITY NIKKI yet, I also highly recommend that - gorgeous graphics and big open world with lots of cool puzzles and platforming, not to mention the very cute stories and characters. Surprisingly it's not been reviewed here but I'd give it 9/10 and for me one of the best five games of 2024.
Not a fan of “urban” settings in my fantasy JRPG but this does have a nice FFXV festival feel. Just needed a chocobo race or two. Also reminded me a bit of the opening hour of Dark Cloud 2 but it’s been a decade since I played that so could be mistaken.
Really don’t have time for another “endless” time waster though. Took a month off from Fortnite and Disney Speedstorm to play ZZZ then dropped that for Infinity Nikki. Came back to Fortnite for the Japanese theme and Godzilla, and the Incredibles season in Speedstorm while still playing Nikki. So I would have to drop 1 for Waves, 3 is my most absolute max as this doesn’t even count games I play for real. Currently battling through Cuphead, getting GoW:R for Christmas tomorrow. And my kid is getting Sea of Stars for 3 player with my wife and I.
So this is tempting, but at what cost?🤷🏻♂️
@Silenos I've been on holiday but review is coming!
@get2sammyb Fab, really look forward to that, Sammy!
I don't know what any of this means but it looks nice.
I have it on my phone but have never played it. Waiting for the PS5 version.
At the perfect moment? Is yinlin getting a rerun when it drops? Didn't think so but I'll still give it a shot at least for zani at least xP
This seems too similar to ZZZ for me to get stuck into another action Gacha. I might possibly give it a try but I don't see myself sticking with this one.
"Kuro Games is giving away a ton of free pulls just for logging in,"
Told me all I needed to know about this game right there.
@get2sammyb oooh someone’s been on holiday 🍻
As somebody strictly on the outside looking in having never so much as downloaded one of these types of games nevermind played it, what sets them apart from one another? They all look like exactly the same game to my uneducated eye.
@Bluemoon2008
The presentation, music, and characters. They're constantly competing quality of life features among themselves that make it look like the same but eventually if you end up settle for only one, then one of them have essentially done their job~
@rjejr
At no cost ...
Because it's free-to-play! 😋
I play and enjoy both. My 2 cents. It's VERY similar to Genshin in terms of the general game design, exploring the world, building teams, time gating progression, questing, battel passes etc. albeit a little less polished all around. If you like Genshin you will almost certainly like this.
The main 4 differences for me are
But I like both, they each have pros and cons.
After 463 hours playing honkai star rail, a change of pace is in order, looks like Genshin Impact so unsure.
@Pushsquarian
Characters and presentation look indistinguishable to me.
I really want a non-gacha, single player with story version of these kinds of games.
@Silenos 30 fps and no inverted Y is a deal breaker at the moment.
@Silenos love Infinity Nikki! Put over 65 hours into it and only have two trophies left to pop, though the iridescent eureka one will be a right pain 🤣
@Silenos OK, old indian man 👍
@Pushsquarian The cost is giving up the time to play another game I'm already playing, in case you didn't already know that. 😁
I can't imagine playing something every single day, let alone having multiple dailies. I'll give this a try when it launches like I have with the others. Perhaps this is the one that grabs my interest.
@Realist yes, I'm totally with you on the lack of inverted Y, hopefully gets included soon because that should be standard in 2024 already - Sony's implementation of this feature at system level is also poor
