Update []: As we reported earlier, SEGA announced a VF Direct to follow its announcement of a new Virtua Fighter game. In truth, this didn’t have a whole lot of new information on the upcoming title, although it did demonstrate just how much investment the publisher is putting into the property.

Across a 30-minute video, it announced a whole host of updates and initiatives, including a greater emphasis on Virtua Fighter e-sports competitions around the world. The series will feature at EVO Japan 2025 next year.

A new update for Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown is available now on the PS4, which includes a laundry list of improvements, including returning moves, improved combos, balance updates, and even better hit effects. This will be used as the foundation for a new Steam release, too.

On the top of the new game, producer Riichiro Yamada didn’t share much, but he pointed out that he wants the new title to innovate just like the original, which was the first 3D fighting game of the time. He simply said he thinks the sequel will “exceed” the expectations of fans.

More information is expected in the near-future, but for now, all we can really ascertain is that SEGA is betting big on Virtua Fighter making a comeback in a big way. And it’s starting right now with major improvements to existing Virtua Fighter games, and investment into the competitive scene.

Original Story:

A new Virtua Fighter game is in-development now at Yakuza maker Ryu ga Gotoku Studio – and we’ll see more of the release in action during a VF Direct imminently.

We’ll update this article once the new information is shared, but for now all we have to go on is a new look for series star Akira in a clip where he’s battling fellow veteran Sarah Bryant.

No platforms have been confirmed, but we’d be shocked if this wasn’t available on the PS5. You can catch the VF Direct from 12AM EST, and as we mentioned, we’ll update this article once we know more.
