Update []:
Fans of anime underwear will be relieved to know HoYoverse has reinstated Zenless Zone Zeroβs upskirts in under 24 hours. A new hotfix, available now, tones down the βfading effectβ detailed in the original article below, meaning you can still get a good glance at your favourite characterβs backside before the model disappears.
In an update message, the studio said the original fading effect βdidnβt display correctlyβ and so itβs corrected that. Itβs also giving all players 300 Polychromes β the titleβs gacha currency β to compensate for the mistake.
Original Story: A big new Zenless Zone Zero update is available today, but discussion is not being dominated by the free S-Rank agent or new storyline structure. Reddit is instead overrun by complaints that you can no longer peek at panties.
The official patch notes point out that βwhen viewed from specific angles, the agent will appear fadedβ. As demonstrated in the X (or Twitter) video below, this effectively means that the character models disappear when you attempt to pan the camera beneath their skirt.
While weβre being somewhat facetious in our approach to this story, there are legitimately people angry about this. βImposing censorship is a spit in the face to all loyal players,β one user wrote. Another pointed out that theyβd spent money on the gacha to unlock these characters, and thus will be complaining about the alteration.
Itβs true that Zenless Zone Zero has a more βadultβ vibe than Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail, and it has been known to indulge in fanservice. We assume this change could be due to age ratings issues, although thatβs purely speculation on our part.
To be fair, the dev team has been immensely responsive to feedback thus far, so we canβt imagine itβll take these complaints lightly. Itβll be interesting to see how it responds.

The director of FF7 Rebirth would be proud
The gooners are coming, and not in the way they want to be.
The second hand embarrassment continues.
@mariomaster96 Not quite. Theyβd need to make the platinum for Genshin Impact or ZZZ unattainable for the average gamer or disabled gamer. Theyβd need to add overly difficult, utterly unnecessary trophies based on tedious, awful VR battles that are as fun as chewing tinfoil. Theyβd need to add trophies based on forced replays on ridiculous difficulties for a game that already is far too long as it is. Only after driving the trophy list into the ground and pissing off trophy hunters the world over (and subsequently publicly apologizing for it, but lazily not fixing their admitted mistakes) would they make the director of FF7Rebirth proud.
Any form of censorship is bad.
Taking away my view of nice bumsβ¦. Damn you censorship!!!!

Iβd be irate too to be honest. Especially if Iβd spent money on skins with the expectation they wouldnβt be censored. Is this just on PS5? Sony have form in this area, or has their puritanism spread?
Such a weird world we have
On one hand, I hate censorship. On the other, this is embarrassing
Imagine taking to Twitter to proclaim you want more upskirting.
The times we live in. π€¦ββοΈ

It doesn't just have a more adult vibe, I'm pretty sure it has a higher age rating than the other 2 so ofc people are angry. They had already toned down the jiggle (mostly for nicole cause holy Ceasar lol), what's the point of going even further this far out at launch?
That being said I honestly didn't notice at all until people were complaining. Probably cause the fanservice for my favorite is in the legs lmao
I wonder why? It wasn't hurting anybody. Did this team think no one would do this when they designed these female characters?
These people gotta understand they can go to a strip club and see this kinda thing for a lot less than there spending already π
Do player characters disappear when wearing pants? Can your wear pants? And by pants, I mean the North American definition of pants not whatever the silly British call them⦠probably leg mittens.
@Nepp67 I'm generally with you that censorship is bad, but peeking a look at ladies privates - some of which are minors - in a game is just such a weird thing to defend. The fact it's a real problem in real life only makes it more weird that you want to defend that so publicly.
It reminds me of the game "defend the indefensible" where players take turns to jokingly defend something abhorrent like Jimmy Saville or Epstein's black book. Off you go.
@Drago201
I donβt think they let you take a games console into a strip club though?
Eh, if it were something that already existed in the game and it really wasn't hurting anyone, seems silly to take the time to develop a means of censorship. Mind you, this type of stuff isn't my cup of tea but I've never understood these games with overly sexualized characters where the devs turnaround and make you seem like the perv. Bro it's your game.
Censorship == being able to peek up womenβs skirts, interesting take.
sony censoring again
These are the same fans who proclaimed Stellar Blade to be their game of the year, I assume? And have likewise been playing with 1 hand all year...
I joke, but really... there's more to life than complaining about pixilated pants- or their subsequent lack of visibility.
Hentai exists people just saying.
These are the same people who are complaining about how the MC of intergalactic looks...
@DennisReynolds
Yes, I say that to people who complain about a gameβs poor storyline - books exist; poor music? Why complain when concerts exist? Poor physics? The real world exists. I mean, these people clearly need to just think things through logically, like us.
So... This person checks those panties every day and makes screens of it so it seems.
Guess they need to get out more..
@themightyant They're not real people. No one is being harmed, no laws are being broken. The fact that "it is a problem in real life" is meaningless. So is car crime, drug dealing, murder; and yet I take it that you do not agree with Jack Thompson regarding GTA?
Jimmy Savile harmed real people. Epstein harmed real people. These "victims" on the other hand are nothing more than a collection of one's and zeros being held upon a hard drive.
@LifeGirl Still mighty weird to spend your days peeking up womenβs skirts, in real life or in a game, and when you go to the internet to complain about no longer being able to do such thing, you either lack shame, or a functioning brain.
@LifeGirl I can understand your point, but we don't make games about going around peeping up girls skirts, especially minors, we do make games about shooting people, and more rarely, drug dealing. One is deemed acceptable the other isn't. Jack Thompson on GTA is a false equivalency.
@LifeGirl @themightyant Pretty much this, it's not real life unless we want to make it a thing now that video games cause gun violence and school shootings.
@thefourfoldroot1 Dude if you're getting upset a gacha game has decided to cover up its questionable aged girls then maybe the issue isn't the "censorship". Reminds me of when certain people cried and shouted censorship when Square patched FF7 Remake to cover up a 15 year old Tifa who was previously showing a bit too much giving her age in that part of the game. ZZZ is honestly rather iffy in this regard so i'm not shocked they're now "censoring".
I dislike Censorship as much as the next person but people that spend time doing this in games are just weird, creepy even.
Complaining that not having the ability to see up the skirts of questionably aged girls in a video game as βcensorshipβ is justβ¦ I donβt even know. Grown ass men, upset about this. Itβs not the best look, is it.
This is why βgamersβ have the associated reputation that they do. This is the kind of stuff that gives second hand embarrassment. Beyond mortifying.
The game is... it's unplayable now...
Lol this is lame but not unexpected. Mihoyo has the CCP to answer to, I'm actually shocked by how much they've been able to get away with this far.
@DennisReynolds
Whoβs upset? I donβt even play these type of gatcha games. I just found your lazy argument humorous, so made a joke out of it.
Wait people still acting like horny teens and claiming tastefulness is censorship? They need help.
I always find these funny. Like you have whole team craft it and have it designed just to hold players hand in the end and hide the details?
If you don't want it to be this way, don't make it in the first place. Stupid
No one saw the sarcasm in my comment π₯² I honestly donβt care about the new camera thing π€£
Lol that takes away the whole point of these games, to ogle your collectable anime waifus. Seems counterintuitive when someone could just go play a real video game anytime smh
This just reinforces my belief that the majority of gamers are lonely ass nerds who would have a heart attack taking to a real woman no to mention free porn is available everywhere why the hell are you worried about being able to peek up video game characters skirts thatβs just weird
My god the only gacha articles that ever get engagement here. Where people that don't even play the game come to complain about the people that are well within their rights to complain about censorship whilst completely ignoring all the other cool stuff the game has to offer
Scream censorship at favourite game but also knows the internet is awash with Rule34 content and beyond.
I mean, if you want a Barclays, just use Google, you'll be here today, Goon tomorrow
Well this is a bit strange isn't it ,you know what else I find strange ,some of these Internet weirdos are up in arms about female protagonists in games, but then always play as a woman when they have a choice ,in a recent online forum I won't mention , one players reason for this was because and I quote , "I don't want to spend dozens of hours staring at a guys butt". Ahh gamers aren't they great ππ
@lazarus11 You say that but I know girls who are quite in love with Solid Snake's butt.
Human beings of both sexes are very much a visual species and that is not changing.
They say one of the hardest things about fighting [censorship] is that you find yourself defending people you find reprehensible. I donβt think the issue here is what they changed, but that they decided to alter something after purchase. Fixing bugs or adding new content is one thing, but altering something or taking away something a certain number of people enjoy is something I think we should all oppose.
@lazarus11
For these people the problem isn't that the character is a female the problem is when that character is not a hot, feminine, jiggly, lingerie model. Eve is good, but Kay Vess is not good.
@LifeGirl hmm ,a man was recently jailed in the uk for 18 years for making AI images of underage girls and selling them online , they weren't real either, the girls in this game look about 13-14 years of age , anyone complaining that they now can't look at their underwear is highly questionable , and then they use the excuse that censorship is bad , which it is, i agree, unless your looking at kids knickers , that's just scummy.
@LifeGirl would these girls get angry, if they made snake wear less tight fitting pants though , and he isn't 14
@Smackosynthesis
I thought you were going to say "on the other hand... busy". π
Well from a country that has Burusera shops, I'm surprised by such a conservative take.
Burusera in case you don't know
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burusera
@MikeOrator kay vess was ok i thought ,she just had a terrible haircut,like a female pat sharp, reminds me what they did to that doctor woman off the tv show FROM , they gave her a kay vess haircut , now she looks terrible.
To PC we goooooooo!
I just wonder why the devs decided implement this now, half a year after game's release. Someone from chinese government saw panties and had a heart attack?
@LifeGirl First guy ai waifus will take revenge on in the machine uprising... just saying π (please don't take this serious)
@lazarus11 I'm sure that some will disagree with me but i think making photorealistic children to sell to pedos is a very different discussion to anime girls in videogames. The former is clearly much further down the slippery slope than the latter.
@lazarus11
I agree that Kay Vess was ok. Her character design fits the themes of the game. I was only making the point that these outspoken gamers like female characters just fine as long as said female characters can be objectified.
I wonder if they changed how the camera works or how character models are rendered on screen to save memory and this is just an unintended result.
Now that's an interesting take. They usually just add more virtual cloth, replace a g-string w/ running shorts, or yoga shorts, or skorts, whatever, but having the character fade from view, that's an interesting take. I'm not even sure I'd even call that "censorship" as much as game mechanic.
I do suppose if I paid real money for a skin I'd be annoyed but at least they didn't change what you paid for, just how up close you can view it. I think you can get close enough, this isn't a dating sim, it's a fighting game. I've played 98% of the base game. No money though.
Next on the list Michelangelo's statue of David
@themightyant
While I get your point and I am not trying to quibble, calling a bunch of polygons representing a cartoon character a "minor" is really weird.
Lel the outrage reminds me of people who complaint and cry about censorship just because they can't take a peek at Ashley panties in RE4 remake compare to the original.
Anyway. I didn't played this game nor care about this censorship. But my guess the reason for this is some parents in China or somewhere, they caught their kids playing this game. As usual the parents complaint to Mihoyo and demand for censorship.
I'm not surprised that Burnice is the one people are complaining about lol. She does look amazing but if your complaining about not seeing her panties that's a bit much. Just look at someone cosplaying as her online.
I'm not surprised they changed her outfit a bit. When I first saw her I assumed that would be happening eventually, don't think Sony had anything to do with it. She is fun to use.
I did unlock Miyabi this morning so I'm excited to use her finally, and Harumasa.
@J2theEzzo
I hate this mentality, though I understand it. Both ZZZ and Stellar Blade are actually phenomenal games with very well designed combat mechanics, which is why I bothered playing them. But of course they have good looking female characters, so I'm a pervert by association.
I mean I am a pervert, but that's not at all why I play these games. I've got other outlets.
This is why I never took the Sony censorship stories seriously in the first place because it was mostly crass sex appeal.
@lazarus11 excellent point. The comparison doesn't really work.
@symmetrian So you are trying to quibble
I can understand your argument that it's "just polygons" but by that same argument underage hentai would be fine, it's "just pixels". That angle doesn't wash. It's what they represent that is important.
BTW I put over 250 hours into ZZZ and never noticed this didn't already happen. I know it does in Genshin as the character fades everytime you climb a ladder or wall, and pretty sure the same is true in HSR. This is just in line with their other games on PlayStation.
@themightyant
Alright, so it was a quibble. I just think the "it's what it represents" concept can be a little tricky. If a draw a stick figure and label it "naked teenager", it fits the same criteria. Blanket statements are easy to disprove.
I only ever noticed this was possible on iOS, because to close the game you have to swipe up from the bottom which, if done incorrectly, tilts the camera.
I also noticed that they very rarely aren't wearing biker shorts or have used some other method to prevent the upskirting from being an issue. The only one that I think actually is a problem is Burnice, and even then they tried to make her underwear look like a cheerleader's uniform, which I guess they figured was more modest.
Removed - inappropriate
Incels. Incels everywhere.
@rjejr
They have already done this with most character designs. Only the character Burnice could be considered problematic, AFAIK. Most have biker shorts or more modest things on.
Removed - discussing moderation
Ah, itβs that time of the month again when people will be only too happy to out themselves as a deplorable on the internet.
@symmetrian I agree there is nuance and there are usually edge cases that don't fit under blanket rules. But I think most people would agree that a stick figure called "naked teenager" would be fine, it doesn't REALLY show a representation of a naked teenager. But a highly accurate 3D model of one teenager wouldn't be ok. Right?
As someone posted above a guy was recently jailed in the uk for 18 years for making AI images of underage girls and selling them online.
Of course there will be somewhere in the middle that will be more subjective. But I think to most this ain't that.
Removed - inappropriate
@Toot1st who says Sony behind it the game company could take it upon themselves and did it that is how false rumors spend and misinformation spreads if any of u live in USA censorship going to get so much more worse next year
why not make it an option in the menu? People who want that new "feature" can turn it on, problem and all controversy solved.
It wasn't just on PS5
Also it seems they'll revert the change because it wasn't intentional and it broke something else.
@CielloArc
Apparently they already have. The stupid ZZZ reddit forum is losing their gross minds.
@themightyant
I dislike poorly defined limits, that's all. I also dislike laws or rules that restrict anything that is harmless to a human being (I am not trying to say that fake/rendered pornography of certain types cannot be harmful to human beings).
Just to be clear, I'm not disagreeing, just having a conversation.
@symmetrian I don't like well defined limits either. And I like that you are brining nuance to the conversation. But I think it's often hard to have strictly defined limits because things are always changing and people are always trying to find loop holes and workarounds.
@Lup I wanted to but couldn't come up with a good enough joke for it
Gooner weebs BTFO yet again. Their tears empower me.
Oh i see Push Square its inappropriate to state that peeping up minors skirts is wrong? In this country (The UK that is, i know you dont acknowledge the place now) you can go on a sex offenders register and are likely to be beaten up in prison for being a beast.
Who remembers that incredible Nikke trailer that the devs apologized for? Yeah?
Right say it with me, UPSKIRTING IS A CRIME. All these incels that think the East is a wonderful Nirvana of anti-woke, why donβt they ask why all cameras in Japan are required to make a loud shutter noise? Allowing you to perv on fictional children with zero consequences is just mad, this being defended while Pixar censoring their new show for depicting a transgender person is welcomed, is insane.
What's all this talk about calling people a "gooner"?
I'm an Arsenal fan and taking offence to this π
@Jrs1
What about the characters that are clearly not minors?
@thefourfoldroot1 Cmon now i thought we all knew that up until recently the age of consent in Japan was 13, i think devs know who they're targeting (nonces) Its certainly worse on the pc market, stuff that would make jimmy saville blush.
Seems they already fixed it as the fade is really light rather than the character completely disappearing in that one video, and you need to get to a really low angle to activate it. That already addresses my concern that the camera could be a hassle when using the 3D models as an art reference. It's very workable.
@Jrs1
Iβm just saying that I looked at the characters after all this pedo talk, and they are split between looking like children (4 or 5), and the quite obviously buxom sexpots. Have no problem censoring the childlike ones (although I suspect they are covered anyway), but why do the same for those who are clearly adults? Laziness?
Twitter strikes again. Or is it Bluesky now?
Also I keep noticing people bringing up Japan? This game was made in China. Talk about complete ignorance of the subject.
@nessisonett Maybe if there was a larger collective of people with staunch anti-censorship ideals rather than two sides being picky about what deserves to be censored and what doesn't, then this sort of thing wouldn't happen when the pendulum inevitably swings and the things that appeal to you start being censored.
But who needs principles when you can get your snipes in on the incels, right?
@Drago201 But that requires actually going outside and interacting with other human beings, and that's a bit scary for them.
@UltimateOtaku91 Haha, I was going to make this point. We have had that term locked down for decades.
@Kingy Youβre drawing parallels between fictionalised child abuse and the existence of transgender people.
Always the same handful of people talking a load of sh*te. I am so exhausted with modern outrage culture. It saddens me that these are the articles which get the most engagement.
I feel like that character in Mean Girls that just wants everyone to go back to how they were in kindergarten and just get along. Can we focus on the games guys? Not the political discourse around them.
More games should take the Omega Quintet approach. Instead of disappearing like this, the girls turn around holding down their skirts and scold you. Makes things more interesting rather than outright censoring anything.
@nessisonett I'm upholding a standard to defend both despite not having strong feelings about the subjects of either, because censorship is abhorrent as a practice.
By all means though, continue with the moral grandstanding.
Welp got to finally try it for myself and the reaction is overblown. You can't pan the camera all the way down without it fading. But if you move it mere centimeters the character is back in full view and you are literally still looking under burnices skirt. What a nothing burger man...
@Kingy While I agree with your sentiment about censorship, and Iβm sure @nessionett does too, this specific situation is related to whatβs essentially digital upskirting, which is weird and shouldnβt be a part of games or any culture full stop. Itβs not censorship to stop people being creepy.
Weebs at it again, this is the 2nd time innthe last week because their basement depravity gets denied sad *****
That is so weird. Why are dudes trying to look up skirts? Video Game or otherwise. Creepo behavior.
Removed - flaming/arguing
I love this. But really though. Ideally this kind of stuff shouldnβt be news. Leave the trolls under the bridge and out of sight where they belong. They keep getting fed attention. It will never stop.
Any form of censorship is bad, and some people seems can't make the difference between real life and not (gaming is not real life).
Some mischief in gaming is fine, if the people want to censor p*rn, start with real life problem like p*onhub and onlyfans, not made up problem like gaming.
Removed - inappropriate
Sounds like it was a glitch. That is a strange glitch. I try to not look at ladies in such ways, but sometimes it happens.
Well at least thereβs a fix instead of outright censoring it entirely. Iβve never played this and am not a fan of Genshin, is this any different?
@wiiware Exactly right, itβs just harmless fun in a fictional setting. Itβs not hurting anyone if things get a bit racy.
@MikeOrator Key Vess was awesome and fit in perfectly in the star wars universe. Some outspoken gamers just being morons as usual.
Why does it have to fade at all?
@Icey664 I THINK it's because they don't want you to put the camera in a position where you can't see anything at all. A lot of games do this.
Do they call them gooners because they like a bit of Arse(nal)?
@symmetrian No, for sure. I didn't play ZZZ, but I played the SB demo, and can see that it's actually a decent game at the core. It's precisely the people who want to seemingly use these games as an outlet for their fantasies, and then complain about not being able to see pants that I find a bit... dubious.
As you say- if that's what you want, there are plenty of other (free) ways to get it. But people paying for costumes, just to look at pixel pants, and then getting upset that you can't perv on the character anymore... I'd say it's time to turn that camera inwards, and reflect on some things, haha.
An actual hot fix
And all was right in the world π
Gaming has gotten very weird. I stopped playing online games because the lines were blurring for too many people. I don't like censorship in games but if the character is a minor then I get it. There's the age old argument of violent games causing violence in developing minds, which I don't agree with. However when it comes to sexuality I have seen the effects of a person who thought that kind of behavior was normal. I'm not a psychologist but the word groomer fits the behavior I saw. I'd be worried that the industry isn't considering what happens if a person (not community) decides one day they need more than the game offers.
The topic starts to veer off into some very dark places where that kind of content is readily available. I can only go by experience and that situation could have been a lot worse. There was another involving the same game which involved a sentencing outside of my home country, they seized consoles to comb chat logs.
That was the moment I stopped playing online games, you hear about that kind of thing happening but you never expect to run into it yourself until you do. I'd had a group I'd been playing with for eight years, we splintered and went our own way after that.
They still don't know the full story, other than a local press article that was published online. I still feel sick when I think about it because actual children were involved and I'd talked them often on headset without knowing what was really going on. It opened my eyes to something I didn't want to believe actually happens.
On the one hand it's just a game and 'not real' but all kinds of media and entertainment can amplify a persons behavior not just games. It might not make them 'bad' but it can sometimes be a reflection of something just beneath the surface that could do with being addressed before it does become something more serious.
Meh let gooners goon. Frankly being offended by this makes you weirder than the βupskirtersβ.
Does the game update itself when it's a really small change? I don't remember ever downloading it
Anyway, it had to have been a bug. When does hoyo ever uncensor their games lol. What an even bigger nothing burger. Welp back to grinding polys for Astra and Evelyn. I just got Miyabis engine too
Training people to be upskirters, virtual or not is pathetic. What has the world become....
@GirlVersusGame Well written post - more eloquent than I could manage! You raise many good questions.
@Titntin Thanks I've been lurking on the site for years but never joined. There was an article a year or two ago that made me want to but I never did. One of the staffers wrote about the evolution of technology and peripherals in gaming that helped people with sight issues and blindness. I'd recently met someone in a game who was blind, their partner was helping them play. It was something I'd never given much thought to and that article was really informative and helped understand that persons position better. I don't know of any other gaming sites that do that.
Removed - flaming/arguing
@MikeOrator " I wonder if they changed how the camera works "
I think this update means we were right yesterday. OK well you said it better than I did when you ninja'd my comment (59/60) but I think we were on the same page. π
The developers could have gone the 2B route and given out achievements for discovering their Agentβs secret.
Yuck. If this made you angry, PLEASE go talk to a trained professional.
So quick, I'm proud of them π
@J2theEzzo
100% this. I'm an older fellow. I grew up on Atari, Colecovision, etc where representation might be a square. If you were lucky it was a square with some other squares attached. Games were played and enjoyed for their gameplay elements almost exclusively because the graphics were just past functional.
The world has changed a great deal, and people growing up with PS2s and PS3s, with high quality cell phones in their pockets since they were five years-old have an entirely different set of priorities and attachments to games. I can't say that I understand it.
I'd like to imagine most of the people having fits were younger and either inexperienced or otherwise disappointed in their social lives. I can understand forming sexual, emotional and mental attachments to something that panders directly to the player.
@armondo36 If this makes anyone feel angry then sit down and have a word with yourself.
People saying this is training people to upskirt must also believe that call of duty trains mass shooters.
@Titntin I know right, it's super pathetic to also train people on using guns and committing fatalities in a fighting game. Lmao
And that was the sound of the last pearl in the world being clutched. We're out of pearls.
@Yukairi Why do you assume they're men?
ππππππ Is the gameplay that mediocre they only play to perv on these mostly underage looking character models? I played Genshin for a while but it was fun at first, until it became work and I dropped it like a pack of mouldy potatoes. This debacle is not enticing me to give hoyo another goyo.
@Jayofmaya
The gameplay is honestly fantastic. Fans/players on the forums, though, were happy to suggest that fanservice was the number 1 reason to play the game, which is absolutely ridiculous. There are only 2 playable female characters that aren't wearing pants, tights, bloomers or biker shorts. The advertising has certainly been risque at times, but nothing like Dead or Alive, or anime like High School of the Dead.
@symmetrian I see. How many characters are there now? I joined Genshin fairly late and it felt really tough to get C6 characters, so I only ever made it for Fischl.
@Jayofmaya
There are quite a bit, actually. We've had two new characters every month or so since launch.
Though trying to get C6 on any character other than an A rank seems like it would be pure folly.
