Watch your back, Geoff; the mysterious developer of 2024's breakout pokerlike, Balatro, is getting in on the award show game. Opting for a more cost-effective Tweet thread instead of Keighley's whole song and dance, Localthunk used their newfound fame to highlight a series of promising indies, bestowing upon the excellent Animal Well the prestigious Golden Thunk award for Game of the Year 2024.
Considering Balatro's complete takeover last year, Localthunk's praise for the similarly lone-wolf developer is probably worth its weight in gold: "Animal Well was an engrossing experience. Dripping with style and secrets and making me feel like an imposter in this industry as a developer, Billy Basso created a true masterpiece."
Localthunk also recommends some very promising runners-up, none of which have been announced for PS5 and PS4, and thus, their names shall not be uttered here (that said, we could see the universally acclaimed fever dream that is Mouthwashing coming at some stage).
What do you think of Localthunk's Golden Thunk pick? Have you had a chance to play Animal Well, or Balatro for that matter? Record your admiration for everything Balatro in the comments section below.

I don't have a twitter account, anyone happy to share those runners up?
Totally agree Animal Well was incredible.
@ThomasHL I got you. Runners up were
The first he specifically said got accused of being a Balatro clone but was actually announced well before it. Rsspect!
An excellent idea by Localthunk - making use of the Indy fame! Indy games have really taken off the last few years, in terms of reaching the mainstream.
Loved Animal Well, this actually makes me want to check out Balatro, they seem like good folks
I've heard nothing but praise for Animal well but have yet to try it. Maybe it's finally time
Finally some respect.
Not a real award.
@TruthClaire1 seems real to me. Don't think I'm imagining any of this.
“Masterpiece” is the right word ☑️ 🏆
@DrVenture69 Is it relaxing or taxing? I'm looking for my next indie, more on the chilled side.
@GirlVersusGame , its a while since i played it but i remember it being pretty chill. It’s not Blasphemous/Super Meatboy levels of nonsense, but if you want to 100% there are some very tricky jumping parts. I think it’s the kind of game you can enjoy and finish without 100%-ing. I really want to replay it now!😄
@DrVenture69 Thanks, I do love my 100%'s though so I'll just have to get those jumps down.
@GirlVersusGame I might be a bit braver on my second playthough and go for it 😄. There are some great secrets it it!
Animal Well is a true gem for fans of mysteries and atmospheric indie games. With its stylish visuals, intriguing world, and hands-off gameplay, every discovery is rewarding. The game strikes the perfect balance between relaxation and challenge—exploring is enjoyable, and uncovering secrets is deeply satisfying. No wonder Localthunk called it a 'masterpiece'—I completely agree! It reminds me of that feeling you get in an online casino https://kasynomalina.com/, when you stumble upon something unexpected—a hidden bonus in a game and then an unexpected win. It’s that same rush of excitement, the thrill of discovery, that makes both experiences so captivating.
