Path of Exile 2 seems to be giving Diablo IV a proper run in the action RPG arena, and a big patch promising a bunch of "positive changes" has been prepared for fans this week. It doesn't sound like the endgame is going to get any easier, however, with Grinding Gear Games maintaining that "the whole death actually mattering thing is actually important".
Observed by PC Gamer, in an interview with streamers, director Johnathon Rogers commented on the unforgiving nature of the endgame. If you didn't know, you get one chance at an endgame map in PoE2, kark it, and you'll be booted back to the Atlas, forfeiting XP and loot droops not hoovered up. You can try a gain, but you'll need another way stone, losing any modifiers it may have had.
According to invested players, it's a high-stakes, high-reward loot run and part of the fun. Rogers says: "We did discuss quite a lot about whether we wanted to go back on one portal or not. I think it comes down to the fact that it just wouldn't feel the same... you have to have some level of failure being possible."

I played Diablo 3 for 15 hours on Hard and died once. I don't get it.
Problem in POE2 is the current economy, needs rework and a reset, which will come in the next big patch.
But one should remember though, this game is currently in Early access - it's not finalized. A fact that for many out there tends to get lost/forgotten...
As it's well known, an RPG of this scale needs a lot of time to balance properly, be patient. GGG is not the current Blizzard, give them time, they'll get it right.
For now it's a very good and fun game, and offers a lot play hours for basically a beta stage release and for the sum of 30$. Not to mention it's gonna be free once it launches...
@LikelySatan your meant to constantly up the difficulty as your character gets stronger, you'll be rewarded with better gear and more XP, and an actual challenge.
@ThorsHammer yeah, I figured it was something like that, since there's so many difficulty levels. Just felt like I was pointing at what I wanted to die.
Regret paying for this to beta test. Should have just waited for the F2P version. It felt really stuttey on base PS5.
This is Elden Ring all over again.
"Get good". I'm sorry, but that is what it comes down to. Put in the effort to practice, build your character, absorb the meta if you need to. For some of us, that adrenaline spike from the struggle is the fun, not having the win handed to us on a plate. Plenty of low effort looter shooters out there for you if you want that.
@LifeGirl sure, sure. I'm also fairly certain a ton of Elden Ring (especially SotE players) "got good" because they used a guide. Probably one written by those despised games journalists.
Funny stuff.
I would love to engage in end game more but the sad reality right now on console (both on PS5 & Series X, yes I purchased two beta keys & yes I am an idiot.) is that due to the severe FPS drops it's virtually unplayable beyond really early mapping.
I am cool with the maps being one shot & done but when nine times out of ten it's an optimisation reason I fail them I get a little peeved.
Yup it's early access & I hope this stuff will be sorted eventually. However I can only judge what is in front of me now and right now it ain't that great in endgame on console.
@RiverGenie Guess this is one of the times where the Pro version makes a huge difference as it runs great on the Pro with all visual settings enabled.
It's absolutely OK for games to have difficult mechanics like this.
Personally, I know I won't be trying POE2 because I don't like my limited gaming time to be wasted by losing resources that I can't get back. But many people don't feel the same way and it's great that there are games to match their tastes.
Not every game needs to be for everyone, nobody can play every game after all.
@DennisReynolds what tier of maps are you able to do with on your pro with all visual settings enabled?
Buttery smooth on the PS5 Pro though...
@Kidfunkadelic83 The screen tearing is utterly abysmal and borderline unplayable. I'm playing it on the Pro and luckily the 120fps mode fixes that issue; but then you get the washed out colours so....
@JB_Whiting I found the 120hz mode made things a lot worse for me. Screen tearing has been pretty bad, regardless, but the 120hz introduced a ton of stuttering, which was mostly resolved when I put it back to 60hz. Hope they can get some good optimization patching in the near future.
@DennisReynolds you can tell it's heavy even on the Pro. Runs well with no DRS on the "balanced" PSSR option and VRR👍 I like that they left a frame rate counter in the menu too
@Kidfunkadelic83 I've had a couple of sessions where it was a bit stuttering but recently I've had no issues.
"git gud" is not an excuse.(execpt for fromsoftware games). I don't play games for challenge I play just to enjoy the story or to relax.
What i heard is that the game is too hard and punishing on some end game portals. Which makes glass canon builds the only viable builds and defense stat useless cause you want to kill the boss before it has a chance to do it's mechanics. Also, that these portals close if you die and you can't go try again. So, there is no progression in learning the bosses. You just have to kill them asap and wether you have full defense or not you will get one shot.
I personally found that to not be ideal and "git gud" will not make players stay if they are frustrated.
