In a welcome reminder that we aren't alone in the world, it appears the PlayStation faithful are evenly divided on the subject of Rest Mode. About 50% opt to power down partially after each gaming session, with the rest choosing to cut the connection completely.
Getting lost in the weeds during a recent conversation with Game File (thanks, IGN), ostensibly about PS5's Welcome Hub feature, Sony Interactive Entertainment's VP of game, product, and player experience, Cory Gasaway, revealed the divide that exists within our community. Gasaway is speaking about U.S. PS5 owners specifically, but we imagine the same behaviours are bound to occur wherever PlayStation fans congregate:
"We gained a lot of insights about how players interact with their PS5 system between play sessions. A small example is we had an internal hypothesis that far more people would put their console into Rest Mode than fully shut it down each time between their play sessions. It turned out it was about 50/50 between the two options for all our players. So, what that meant was for about 50% of our users, when they booted up, if they were in the US, they were landing on our Explore page. Those outside the U.S. would land on the page for the last game that they have played."
Moderate in all things, this scribe is just as likely to shut down the PS5 as put it into Rest Mode, giving our faithful companion a bit of variety. Do you shut your PlayStation down fully or put it into Rest Mode? Let us know in the comments section below.
Do you mostly put your PS5 in Rest Mode or shut it down? (5,931 votes)
- I largely leave my system in Rest Mode
- I tend to fully shut down my console
- It really depends on the situation

I always shut mine down when I'm done unless I plan to come back later in the day.
always shut down even if i am coming back like in 20 mins time just habit
Always in rest mode.
I don't think I've ever used rest mode.
Shutdown before going to sleep
Rest mode during the day or while out and about with the PS Portal packed in
Always shut down, I imagine it saves energy. The only time I use rest mode is if I’m downloading a large update or new game overnight on my glacial internet connection.
I always use Rest Mode as I have two USB-C cables connected to my PS5 Pro to charge my iPhone and/or iPad.
Probably 80/20 I put it in rest mode, especially since I bought a Portal. I've also had my PS5 stood in it's upright position since day one with no issues.
I power down, my kids use rest mode.
If it took longer to boot I'd probably rest mode too, but as it's quicker than my tv, never felt in a rush to get going.
Always shut down - I mean its so fast, its only a few extra seconds to load back up from full shut down.
Rest mode mainly. Don’t really see much reason not to, it’s just faster to get back into a game, especially if it’s in suspend mode. Plus I might sometimes want a quick session on the portal.
Both.
Rest mode if I’m charging controller or gaming again later.
Power off over night or longer periods.
Always shut down, save your pennies people!
Rest mode... for the Portal
Always shut down unless I'm downloading an update etc.
Shut down but I also tend to leave the PlayStation on if I’m home
Shut down unless im dloading.
Always rest mode, unless I am going on holiday or something or know I won't be using it for a few days at least
99% of the time I put it in rest mode.
I always switch it off. Rest mode just never made sense to me. Only on for pre-downloads/downloads of new games. If a game needs a big update? I'll just catch up on a movie for the night instead.
Rest mode, since I have a ps portal
@Reform wait, what’s the issue with the PS5 being upright?
Mines been standing tall on my living room floor since I got it as it doesn’t fit in the TV cabinet. Are people experiencing problems?
I always shut down my PS5. Never used rest mode.
Judging by these comments I guess no one has their PS5 set up to where it automatically goes into rest mode after a certain amount of time has pass. That’s the only time I use rest mode is when i unknowingly fall asleep and it automatically goes into rest mode eventually 😴💤💤💤💤💤💤💤💤💤
For me it depends. Rest mode is very useful if I want to download something overnight or charge controllers, but if there's no real need for the PS5 to be in that state, I'll shut it down. I suppose it's just a holdover from habitually shutting down computers and older consoles when I was younger; leaving it in Rest mode unnecessarily feels wrong
It’s a mixture of both for me.
Rest mode during the day. Off at night.
However, sometimes I don’t manage to get back into the console and I forget to turn it off so it will be on rest mode for a couple days.
It would be nice if there were some more advanced settings.
For example:
Things like that might be helpful?
I don't use rest/sleep mode on any appliance whatsoever, not my Mac M4, my PC , my PS5, TV etc etc
I'm good waiting 10 seconds for them to start up from off thanks
Depends if I plan to play on my PS5 again in the foreseeable future or not
I put it into rest of I'll be back relatively soon, like less than an hour. Otherwise it's off! It doesn't use too much energy but it all adds up, gotta keep them bills down
Fully off unless I'm charging the controllers or downloading a game.
It's less power used and the PS5 is lightning quick to boot.
It's funny; I was just thinking about why I put my PS on rest mode all the time.😀
It all started when I added an extra SSD and downloaded a bunch of games in rest mode.
It's not like I can save a lot of loading/booting time like on a PC.
@Kienda There were some reports of the liquid metal pooling or even leaking from it's seal from PS5's stood upright for too long, it's hard to know what's true and what isn't though. As I said I've had mine upright since day one and I haven't had a problem.
Mine goes into rest mode if I’m away from it for 10 minutes, but I always shut it down. Not a big fan of paying for something I’m not using.
For me at least, it seems to take longer to come out of rest mode that to boot up and start a game from scratch (both the Pro and my old one)
If im taking a break for an hour or two it’s in rest mode, otherwise I shut it down yo
I put my console in rest mode for 2 reasons. 1) in middle of a gaming session and have to stop and don't want to lose progress so enter rest mode so can resume and find save point when I have time.
2) and it's most common reason is to download games etc ready for next time I get to go on PS5
Riddle me this: why has every console since the PS3 required a lengthy shutdown process whilst you can just turn off the mains on an Xbox and it’s fine?
Always rest mode, just like my TV in stand by mode.
Rest mode because I need to charge my astro headset
Shut down mostly, but Rest Mode if the game has awful save points like Atlus games and don't want to lose progress.
Rest mode only. My steam deck is ps portal.
Depends on the situation but most of the time rest mode as I play everyday. I also remote play from bed on Steam Deck which required rest mode. But if i'm going away for the weekend or longer will shut it down.
Rest mode unless I'm away for a week or so. Simply to get back to exactly where I was in the game I was playing, saving those precious seconds of life.. and then losing them again by having to work more to pay the bills for it 🥲
I'd only use rest mode if I was downloading something large while going out - which is rarely the case as most things download rather quick.
I imagine it's crucial for those using any kind of remote play though.
Rest mode 100% of the time.
Always shut it off unless my TV turns off whilst something is installing or updating that takes a few hours or when I’m downstairs watching something with family then it’s in rest mode.
Don’t like the idea of having to leave it on especially since my previous PS4 I had died in rest mode and had to buy a new one
Always rest mode, unless I'm going away and won't be playing for a while. Otherwise I always like to get games downloaded while not using, and I use the Portal a lot.
@Reform thanks for the info.
I’m going to just leave mine as it is as I’m assuming that is very rare.
I mostly put it in rest mode as it will still allow my controller to charge.
It does however depend on what game I'm playing, if I'm playing something that's connected to a server (IE black ops 6), the game will have timed out when you fire it back up so in that situation I'd probably just completely power it down.
If its a game where I can literally pick up and carry on from where I left it then it's rest mode all the way
Rest mode 4 life.
I ALWAYS turned Off and plugged OUT my PS5 machine and every video game machines from electricity after playing.
Save the electricity, take care of your gaming machines.
I've never used rest mode on any device, I'm too cautious of wasting energy. And just like Anti-Matter said right as I was typing this, I'd prefer not to overwork the console.
The link to the YT video below shows a repair technician working on a faulty ps5 who said it's not easy to prove the liquid metal dry spots on CPU/heatsink was causing the shut down of that console. My take on this is millions of electronic items are produced and so there will always be some manufacturing issues I suppose. Not sure about the slim edition?
This video shows the original ps5 teardown and liquid metal dry spots
https://youtu.be/OiUBA6a_Ah8?feature=shared
Depends if I'm downloading otherwise switch off
Power off everything man, help save the planet.
I always leave most of my stuff on standby. I'm not fussed by the little bit of power it uses
Rest mode all day, all night.
If you are a monster and shut it down...... no auto updates or picking up where you left off right?
Rest mode all day every day u never know when a update for a game comes out
@Reform that does not happen my ps been standing up every since I had it that was launched day
If I understand https://www.playstation.com/en-se/legal/ecodesign/ rest mode costs Ps5 users in the US around $4/year. That’s not nothing when we think of all the Ps5s but it’s a fraction of a 60w-equivalent LED lightbulb. I wish the article did something to inform people vice just polling for engagement.
MATH
Rest mode always. If it had quick resume like Xbox maybe I'd do a full shut down, but some games still take a while to load in and make us look at logos of the companies. Not many show the cards to jump back in quicker that we were sold on in 2020.
Also I can then use the app to tell it to download new games, and it will keep recently played updated.
@koffing more like 3w in rest, and about 45w when doing things in rest mode, downloading game updates and such.
I've been using Rest Mode ever since it was invented (PS4), with
no major issues on either of my consoles, PS4 Pro or PS5.
Mostly because I can resume the game exactly where I left it.
Also, if I find a promotion on PS Store, I usually buy it from PC (I have to buy top-up cards to add wallet funds, and this process is much faster on PC). Then I remotely start the game download on the console without having turn it on (I can do this from work and have the game ready to play when I get home).
Fully shutdown after im done with each session. Unless im paused and have to do something else for like 10-15 minutes. Never leave you console on sleep mode frequently guys. Save the earth, save your electricity bill and prolonged you ps5 life
Why waste energy for something that takes less then seconds to boot up.
I almost always have a game running, sometimes unsaved, so 100 % Rest Mode for me.
I’ve had nothing but problems when using rest mode since I got my PS5 on launch day. I thought it bricked itself multiple times, and this would occur immediatelg after using rest mode. Eventually it wasn’t worth the hassle of holding the power button to enter Rebuilding Database mode and I was leery of losing saves and such, so I only ever turn the system off completely now. Never had this issue with any other console before.
@Flaming_Kaiser @Arkz @koffing
As someone who ALWAYS leaves their console in “Rest mode” I really wish the article went into at least some explanation of the differences between the 2 modes. I mean I understand the difference between rest and off, but things like cost, and the amount of time it takes to boot either way.
I always used to turn off my PC on the power strip but have gotten too lazy to even do that, I just let it go to sleep now. I like my PS5 downloading and installing my frequent Fortnite and Disney Speedstorm updates while I’m asleep. It’s funny b/c I never “suspend” games, I make sure I always close them, but I just always leave it in rest mode anyway.
Maybe it’s time to find out for myself. I’m on the launch disc PS5, probably wasting more power than the Slim. 🤑
Since i got my portal - restmode it is~ before i used to shut it down.
Rest mode always. Same with my Xbox. In case I want a remote session and I like them always read and for the most part not be bothered by updates.
@Balaam_ if you’re talking about the green screen if death, that was indeed a defect. It happened to me all the time, eventually Sony replaced my console and never had the problem again.
Full shut down beccause 1) I'm not wasting the money on the power for no reason 2) Environment
I put it in Rest Mode when I am actively playing through games just to ensure that any game patches are downloaded and installed overnight.
If I know I won't be playing the console for a while, I will put it in Shut Down mode.
At the moment, it's shut down and will be for the foreseeable future.
The only time I leave my PS5 in rest mode is when I legitimately forget to turn it off or when there's an update I know isn't gonna be done when I'm actually playing on it.
Shut it down & turn off at socket when it's not in use. Same with every console / appliances I have.
Never had a valid reason to keep them on even in sleep mode.
@koffing never did the math but concluded long ago it had to be negligible. pretty much why I just always put it in rest mode. I already know my footprint is pretty small so let this one quality of life thing slide.
Rest mode portal crew assemble
I actually cant believe its so even, i presumed 99% of people used rest mode? your game starts exactly in the same place after rest mode, from a pause screen etc, don't need to think about saving or anything.
I once left it in rest mode over night as i was downloading something, i had my ps5 in my bedroom at that time and the console was making some noise that was bothering me all night (normally you wouldnt hear anything during the day) so i keep mine always switched off after finishing gaming
I always turn mine off. I barely ever used rest mode on my consoles.
If I'll be back on within a few hours, rest mode. If I'm stepping away for a bit longer, power down. I've seen that PS5 shut down incorrectly screen too many times over the years from power outages and whatnot lol
I usually turn my consoles off, but with PS5 I pretty much always use rest mode as it is just convenient to then play later in remote play, including from other networks.
I always leave it in rest mode ,because I like starting up a game where I left it paused.
Rest mode. Can’t use Remote Play if it’s shut down.
@djhegzy yeah its the reason I use rest mode , with all these comments stating they always shut down, im kind of wondering whether people know, they can actually do this.
I always shut down. Any updates don’t take long anyway, and I’m just old school in terms of “if you’re not using it, turn it off”.
I only shut it down if I'm going on holiday or something. Rest mode allows the system to apply updates, download any digital purchases, and lets you get straight back to where you paused your game. Why would you shut it down?
I leave in rest mode if there are few updates to download otherwise usually shut down.
@lazarus11 they must not know? its great for RPGs, like metaphor etc, where you cant just save anywhere, what if you are mid dungeon and have to go do something? easy, rest mode and come back tomorrow
@Luminous117 That's actually something I should do.
I put my console in rest mode.
The only times I’ve used rest mode were when I did it on accident.
@Shinnok789 This.
I do the same way, always been a rest mode for both my PS4 Pro and PS5 ever since it was introduced and have had no issues whatsoever. The remote download command when I bought my games online was more useful to me and that can't be done when my console is fully turned off.
When writings articles like this please consider adding wattage information.
@PegasusActual93 I notice games stop downloading in rest mode. Any way to fix that?
I always turn mine off because I live in a place with frequent power outages. I only used to put it on rest mode during downloads, but I stopped doing that and now download while playing. People say that slows down the download speed a lot but it seems pretty fast to me, I guess my connection is pretty good.
I mostly keep my PS5 in rest mode cause I use my Portal around the house a lot. But I do like to shut it down here and there. It's like a well earned rest.
Power it down every time.
It's in a 4-way extension socket, along with the TV and the PS4 Pro, and that extension has a power on off switch that gets turned off every night.
Save and Shut down — as handy as Rest Mode is, I don't trust it fully enough to lose progress for the sake of the minute or so it takes to launch a PS5 game from scratch
I almost never fully shut my PS5 down, but I do fully close games when I’m done.
@PegasusActual93 No, my internet is great. It seems as soon as I put on rest mode, I come back to "this cannot download" everytime for three years since I got PS5. Never had the issue with PS4
I shut down it completely almost all times. My country is really hot for most of the year, so I prefer to leave the PS5 more cool while I'm not playing. Normally I only play at night anyways, so, if I'm not downloading a big install file, it's turn off.
I always prefer to shut my systems down, don't like them on standby. Always remember borrowing my Snes to a friend. I found out he just paused the system & the system was on for days!! Let's just say I was pissed & took my Snes back soon as.
Rest mode during the day but its fully off when i go to sleep at night or at work all day.
Question for people here, I assume none of you experience power outages? It's rare in my case, but at least 3-4 times a year. I don't want to fry my electronics, no matter how small the chances are
I let it rest so it can charge my controller, download updates, and because I still don't really know when it backs up cloud saves (is it as soon as you close the game or at some later point?) I still close out my games and apps first though because letting a game standby seems to guarantee the power will go out overnight.
Prior to owning a Portal, I would always shut my console down fully. However, that has shifted since getting one. The only time I shut down now is if inclement weather is likely to cause an outage. I'm tired of being scolded for not shutting down properly. 😂
I put it in rest mode when I take a break from playing it and then go back to it, and shut it down if I want to play another console or before bedtime.
I did rest mode once and I couldn't get my picture back...I had to unplug and replug the HDMI to fix it. I always turn it off.
Even the poll is split 😆
Wow our poll pretty much is consistent with what they said!
Modern electronics are designed to linger in a low-power state when not in use. It's 2025, not 2005.
I don’t use remote play, so I always fully shut down the console unless I’m pausing mid-game to get back to in a couple hours.
Before I got 1Gbps FTTP it was always in rest mode so any updates were downloaded overnight, and to charge controllers, headsets etc. Now though any updates take seconds so i mostly use it if I'm in the middle of a game and can't save.
Rest mode is very Energy efficient even on the older console revisions so that need not be a concern either way.
Always shut it down when it's not in use.
Controllers are charged from a wall outlet beside my couch, so I stick them on that whenever it occurs to me (and I'm home - never leave stuff charging unattended).
@rjejr I play mostly singleplayer and i try to finish a game before i move on so for its really not that usefull for me personally and a waste of power. Plus it takes so little time to boot up.
But everyone has a different way they use their console and play different genre of games.
I turn ps5 off unless I'm not using it and want to dowoad update when I'm not there
I use rest mode to charge controllers after a session.
I think I'd like to have the option of "charge for 3 hours then switch off"
In rest mode my TV didn't turn on quick enough to hear the old skool start up sound. I have to turn my PlayStation fully off so the TV starts in time for the boot up sound. The 30 year anniversary screen is saving the planet. Keep the feature for the sake of the future!
Pretty much restmode all the time. Starts up faster with the Portal.
Always shut down, the boot time is so negligible rest mode just doesn't pay off
Rest Mode all the time. The only time I shut it down is when I'm going on vacation or something.
I actually NEVER shut it down. Always in rest mode and when something doesn't work, I try restarting the console.
The first time I turned off my PS5 was when I was selling it after I bought PS5 Pro
Rest mode, 24/7. It is plugged into a APC UPS power strip for any kind of power blip. Never have to update anything as it happens while I am not using it.
My wife's parents were of a generation that always used to fully turn off and unplug their TV, video etc. at night - I'm talking up until 5-10 years ago - which I always found hilariously old-fashioned. So who are these crazy people who fully shut down a games console in 2025 - time travellers from the 1950s? I can't even remember the last time I fully switched off my PS5.
It depends. Will I play again in a few hours? Rest mode. If not? Shut down.
Mostly because we tend to lose power on occasion where I live.
Rest Mode was the enemy of the Vita's memory cards, and based on my own observations, sped up the likelihood of it corrupting. While I cannot state this as absolute fact (my budget for 32gb & 64gb cards was limited), I can say it seemed more than likely!
Therefore, all Sony consoles moving forward will be put into "off" mode.
rest mode on my days off shut down when I'm at work or vising fam.
If I am at home, rest mode...if I am away or going to bed, off.
I only shut down if there's a storm coming that's somewhat likely to knock out power, or if we're going to be gone for a few days. Otherwise, rest mode always.
I very rarely use Rest Mode. Most often, my PS5 is turned off, outright.
I will only ever use Rest Mode if something is actually downloading at the time.
Rest mode all the way!
Will always power it off unless I'm part level of a game then ill put on standby
I'm shocked by how many people leave it in rest mode all the time. I only ever leave it in rest mode if I'm downloading something or I stop for half hour to eat my dinner.
