We’ve mentioned on multiple occasions how brilliant it is publishers are preserving their back catalogues on PS5, and Super Technos World: River City & Technos Arcade Classics may be one of our favourite compilations thus far.
This pack features 12 games, some of which never released outside of Japan. That means they haven’t even been localised in some instances, although you shouldn’t have too much trouble figuring out how to play.
We’re going to rattle off the full list of releases, with full descriptions courtesy of the press release, below:

- River City Renegade (Super Famicom): Kunio’s coming to Osaka! Kunio and his friends come to the city of Osaka for a school trip–only to find themselves embroiled in a web of shady schemes. Unravel the truth as you follow this story with a more realistic taste than the usual River City style. Take a stroll down the streets of Osaka: get caught up in some scrambles, buy a refreshing drink from the vending machines, and hop on the train to move locations. Stock up on experience points to level up and increase your stats or learn new special moves in this action RPG.
- Kunio’s Dodgeball Time, C’mon Guys! (Super Famicom): The return of a dodgeball classic! Our beloved dodgeball-slinging delinquent is back in town! This game features special shots, with the ability to purchase special moves and combine them with others to create your own, unique shot. There’s a whole range of options to explore, from forming a tower with a teammate to shoot from up high to rearranging your team formation! The stages span across the world, with some tilting and others sinking to keep you on your toes. Dive in for an all-new River City dodgeball experience!
- Downtown River City Baseball Story ~Play Ball, Kunio!~ (Super Famicom): Kunio’s underclassman Sugata takes center stage! Follow our new hero, Sugata, as he stands up to the task of rebuilding the baseball team after a devastating loss–searching for success in both love and baseball. The rules follow the baseball standards we all know… until the characters step in with special moves that can send their opponents packing! Formulate a strategy to gain the upper hand, making use of special items along the way. Progress the story far enough, and you just might see the famous delinquent Kunio stepping onto the ballfield!
- Kunio’s Oden (Super Famicom): The one and only River City falling puzzle game! This unique River City puzzle game themed after the dish Oden will have you feeling hungry. Place the ingredients carefully as they fall from the top of the screen to line up the same ingredients to clear them away. You lose the game if you cannot clear the ingredients and they fill up to the top of the screen. Choose your favorite flavor from the two rule options, “Connect” or “Line-up,” and chow down!
- THE COMBATRIBES (Super Famicom): Take control of military vets to eliminate evil in this action game! The three protagonists are shrouded in mystery, aside from their shared past as veterans of the American military. They take down gangs and all sorts of organized crime during their travels. Word spreads, and people start to call them the “Combatribes.” Choose one from the uniquely specialized protagonists to tear down the evil festering in New York with their iron fists. Engage in a variety of actions, from grabbing and tossing the opponent to all-out beatdowns as you clear stages in this action game.
- SugoroQuest++ –DICENICS- (Super Famicom): Wacky board game antics await at the roll of the dice! Step into the fantasy kingdom of Siland and let the roll of the dice guide your journey throughout the lands. You’ll go shopping, watch events unfold, and engage in battles as you aim to complete your quest in this party game. Stopping on the same spot as another player starts a battle, with the losing player missing out on a turn… There are events and items scattered across the kingdom to aid in your quest, so try and surpass the other players to claim the top score!
- DunQuest (Super Famicom): A rare Technos action RPG! Defeat enemies from a top-down view in this action RPG. Stay on your toes, because there’s no time for careful strategizing in this real-time dungeon. Strike before the enemy can to neutralize their attacks. You can sell items picked up in the dungeon to obtain better equipment. Defeat the bosses lurking deep in the dungeon to bring peace back to the kingdom! Delve into the story, complete with a wealth of side events!
- Super Dodge Ball (Arcade / NEOGEO): The dodgeball game spoken of in legend!
This legendary dodgeball game is finally making its worldwide debut! Enjoy a powered-up version of this arcade title, primed to be enjoyed versus style. Input commands to perform special moves and take down the opponent team of three to seize victory. You can recruit one member from the opponent team upon victory, so form your own dream team as you aim for the championship! At the finish line, you’ll uncover the true goal behind the demon of dodgeball organizing the tournament… - XAIN’D SLEENA: SOLDIER OF LIGHT (Arcade): Fight your way through the air and skies in this classic Technos shooting game! This Technos Japan shooting game features stages divided into two phases: a grounded action shooting phase, with aerial battles between space ships waiting after. Make use of movement options from double jumps to crouching shots to clear the total of 6 stages. Experience the epic backstory as you take the role of the soldier of light Xain standing against the evil empire.
- CHINA GATE (Arcade): Make your way west in this stage-based action game! Choose your character between Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing to travel through the stages in this action game. A powerful boss awaits at the end of each stage to thwart the player’s progress. The characters wield spells in addition to standard attacks, which can be activated by using the gems obtained when defeating enemies. Unleash powerful spells to see your journey through and recover the stolen scrolls.
- THE COMBATRIBES (Arcade): Take control of military vets to eliminate evil in this action game!
- SHADOW FORCE (Arcade): Face off against evil as a cyborg ninja in this belt-scroll action game! In a not-so-distant future, the evil organization Teaser has taken control of the world–but four cyborg ninjas stand up against them. Take control of the different characters to conquer the enemy-ridden stages ahead of you. The unique “Snatch” mechanic lets you take control of certain enemies. Switch over to make use of powerful enemies to overcome the trials of each stage.
A fantastic mix of games here, then, many of which we’ve personally never played. Most importantly, the bundle comes with a variety of contemporary features, such as save states and online play.
The press release even mentions that “critical issues” with the originals have been addressed, “leaving no unintended obstacles to completing the games”.
The bundle’s due out on 24th April.

Every company should be doing this. Bring all of their games forward. I'm looking at you bandia namco and digimon world 1-3.
Great news for retro fans, a couple of these games came to the Evercade and I can vouch for Combatribes, that was fun!
@Americansamurai1 I'm like that with the Tekken games.
@AdamNovice yeah should be easy money for them
@Americansamurai1 Tecmo should do this for Ninja Gaiden's 30th anniversary this year.
This is awesome. Can't wait to play these!
This looks cool but man I hope the trophy list is more forgiving than Double Dragon/Kunio Kun Retro Brawler Bundle.
I've been wanting Super Dodge ball forever, used to fill the machine with quarters, pure nostalgia.
Since the only reference to a "River City Renegade" game predating this announcement that I could find is a Youtube video of a Kunio fangame, might be worth pointing out that (going on the plot description) River City Renegade in this compilation is a localisation of Shodai Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun, the first Kunio game on the Super Famicom (so released before, but set after, Kunio-tachi no Banka which was localised as River City Girls Zero).
Wow I really L O V E stuff like this. And the baseball and dice game looks awesome.
I am ready for a few cozy session with this.
