Wow, from plucky PS4 and PS Vita isometric shooter to one of the biggest games in the world to the big screen, huh? Someone will need to write a case study on the success of Helldivers 2 one day.
While very few details were announced, PS Productions bigwig Asad Qizilbash took to the stage at CES 2025 today to announce that Sony is working on a big screen adaptation of its fastest-selling first-party game ever.
Helldivers is obviously hugely inspired by campy sci-fi horror, so we’re curious how this film will set itself apart from its evident inspiration, like Starship Troopers. There’s no word on who will write, direct, or star in the movie just yet.
This one’s probably quite a way out, although if Helldivers 2 retains its popularity and becomes the long-term live service success Sony hopes it’ll be, then the game should still be very relevant when the film eventually drops.

If we can't get more Starship Troopers on theaters this is the next best thing, it just needs to be crazy and fun. I hope they offer a cameo to Van Dien.
So it’s a new Starship Troopers.
The movie should be about multiple teams that keep getting killed and the story moves to a new team and after ten minutes they get killed and they move to another team. Kind of how they did it in hunt. Lean into the joke.
Well they must keep the essense of the game : HUMOUR
Will it have jack black and Kevin Hart?
that’s cool. i’m glad to see a live service game doing so good, and even getting a movie!
Adam McKay would nail the tone as director. He would never do it... but he would be perfect.
@anon_pel222 ...like Starship Troopers.
@sonicmeerkat
I sure hope not.
Imagine if it’s a serious story, hailing fascism as the only way forward for mankind and something to be honoured. Bring the whole thing full circle with the starship trooper book to film journey
If it's anything like the the OG Starship Troopers then I'm all for it, that movie was so ahead of it time and I would love to see Van dein get a part in the movie, that would be cool.
How to set it appart from Starship Troopers? Well, ST is famous because it is so over the top that it almost leans on comedy territory while it still mantains the action and the commentary on fascism...
That is kinda difficult to get nowadays because, to put it bluntly, current scriptwriters have no talent for this kind of nuance.
Helldivers movie will either be a straight comedy or a straight action movie.
Starship troopers belongs to Sony anyway so they could just literally copy what they already made back in the 90s
A movie adaptation with a twist getting a movie adaptation
This could be a great film if done right. I wouldn't even say it particularly needs to set itself apart from Starship troopers, oukd do with a return to that kind if campy action
With the right vision, this could lend itself to a pretty great action comedy movie.
They should lean into the fact the divers are faceless meat sacks on the front line. I think it could work really well if they made it with large ensemble cast where you follow a small fire team for like 10-15 minutes before they die a horrible death. Would be great if they marketed it with a singular star (or 4 star squad) only to have them die a horribly cartoonish death randomly, like 5 minutes in. Have the fact the big stars die AT ALL as part of the shock/humor. But then right after one star dies, a new star pops out of a drop pod and BAM you're off and running. (Repeat as necessary for comedic effect.)
OR you make it like Edge of Tomorrow where the singular group of stars die over and over and over and THAT'S a key part of it. Lean into the fan theory that perhaps the divers are clones.
I legit think it could be done well either way. I'm excited to see them tackle this. I think the fact the game only really has the broadest of strokes related to a storyline attached to it could be a huge creative boon to whomever they get to work on it. There will be far lower expectations to properly adapt it unlike something like TLOU. Plus, it's simply a FUN game/premise so I hope they embrace the absurdity, satire, and cartoonishness of it.
This is the only way Hollywood can make money anymore by bamboozling gullible "gamers" with video game movies because all the people in Hollywood who were good at their jobs have retired, expired or got exposed and put in prison.
