Project Century

Revealed at The Game Awards 2024, Project Century is a mysterious title from developer RGG Studios, the prolific team behind the Like a Dragon / Yakuza series. Very little is known about the game, except for its seemingly historical Japanese setting in 1915. Naturally, this has led to fan speculation, and studio director Masayoshi Yokoyama has dismissed the lot of it, claiming the trailer gives away nothing.

This one reached us via Japanese publication GameTalk, translated by Automaton, and picked up by Polygon. In a Boxing Day broadcast, Yokoyama said that the theories he has seen are completely off the mark. Fans have latched onto the idea that the game's protagonist is a young Makoto Tojo, founder of the future yakuza Tojo Clan, but it seems this won't be the case.

The studio is clearly passionate about Japanese history, as evidenced by Like a Dragon: Ishin, which retells the story of the revolutionary samurai Sakamoto Ryoma. As all we really know about Project Century is its 1915 setting, we'd be willing to wager it will at least have The Twenty-One Demands, which a young and aggressive Japanese Empire made of the Republic of China during the First World War, as a backdrop.

What do you think Project Century will ultimately be about? Will it tie back to the larger franchises RGG is responsible for, or do you think it will be more historical in nature? End your own period of isolation in the comments section below.
