Capcom has confirmed its phenomenal PS5, PS4 remake of Resident Evil 4 has now sold more than nine million copies, meaning an additional one million units have been bought since its last report less than three months ago. According to Resident Evil author Alex Aniel, this makes the latest Capcom remake "by far" the fastest-selling Resident Evil title ever.
In two posts to Twitter, the Itchy Tasty: An Unofficial History of Resident Evil scribe revealed how Resident Evil 4's eighth quarter sales are more than double any other game in the series, with the closest being Resident Evil Village at 500,000. It's sold 7.9 million copies so far, and Resident Evil 4 has already beaten that in a shorter amount of time.
More remakes of Resident Evil games are already announced to be in development, with the likes of Code Veronica and Resident Evil Zero being potential options for Capcom. However, based on development history, a brand new game and sequel to Resident Evil Village should be what the Japanese developer has in store next.
To mark the sales milestone, Capcom released a new piece of Resident Evil 4 artwork:
In our Resident Evil 4 PS5 review, we awarded a rare 10/10 rating, concluding: "Capcom has faithfully remade a genuine classic by bringing it into the modern age and kitting it out with new content, tremendous combat, and striking visuals. What was there before was already enough to consider Resident Evil 4 one of the best games of all time, but now it earns that title in 2023 off the back of better environments and sublime action." Since release, the Ada Wong-focused expansion Separate Ways provided reason to go back in what was an excellent DLC offering.

While I can't argue this is a god tier remake. I would still say the RE1 remake (Gamecube) is still the best remake of all time.
Capcom is so consistent my Girlfriend enjoyed Kunitsugami and Dragons Dogma 2.
I was enjoying the Miles Edgeworth collection but need to go back and finish it. And older releases like RE2R,RE3R as well as RE1R arguably one of the best RE games immensely creepy.
Well deserved! I love this game!
Did my part with a PS5 (digital) copy on Day 1. I also have the Steam version and physical copies for Series X & PS5.
Now it looks and runs even better on my PS5 Pro! Keep them hits coming, Capcom!
I remember when RE Series was exclusive to Nintendo GameCube for a time period and console fanboys were still a thing. RE4 Original came out with great reviews.
Sometime later it came to PS2 once exclusivity ended. And it got even better reviews. Having played RE2 and RE3 in 90s this was a revolutionary step for the series. But for some reason I wasn’t able to finish it back then. Finally, I got the opportunity in 2024. As good as I remembered it to be! No surprises it sold so well.
I really wanted to like this game but these characters are so boring next to their original counterparts
Top-tier PSVR2 game too.
Its a fantastic remake, personally i prefer RE2 Remake but its very close between them.
A great remake that's both faithful to the original and it's own thing and one of the best games on PSVR2 as well
@vikramsingh The GameCube version was superior to the PS2 version apart from missing the Ada Wong missions.
I have the gold edition on PS5 physically and on Xbox digitally. It's an incredible remake of an amazing game.
I still think the Wii version was the best version of the original. The pointer controls made it feel so much better.
@__jamiie Completely agree , Wii version is best of the best.
Capcom's excelling at the mo' because they've got a selection of good things on sale stranger
Definitely was my 2023 goty.
Capcom feels like the only AAA company that doesn’t have a miasma of instability surrounding it.
“…but we don’t need a remake for 4, the original is fine as it is!?!?”
Capcom have outdone themselves with this and resi 2. The futher support with vr2 aswell makes them the best developers at the moment. Look forward to resi 9 and freaking onimusha!
Absolutely amazing game. I never fully beat the original on PS2 back in the day even though I still own that copy. It was really fun to have this remake be my first experience and truly enjoyed it and the DLC. During Black Friday I did grab the psvr too Horizon bundle so I'm very excited to replay this game in VR as I heard it was very well done and received as well
@__jamiie oh, never owned a GameCube. But would have loved to own one back in the day.
The Pro update for this game is excellent to anyone on the fence about the game - looks better, and runs up to 100fps if you have the TV capability.
On PSVR2 it is phenomenal. Not really into it flat, too much of an action game to be a great Resident Evil, but in VR the fear is palpable to go alongside perfect action.
Surprise to see RE6 still selling decently after more than a decade after release. Whatever some people say, RE5 and 6 are still great action horror games. I have had a great time playing together with my brother.
What’re ya sellin?
RE4 remake is my number one game of all time. It's a remake of one of the best games ever released back in 2005, It also has a great expansion that is the length of most single player campaigns and it has incredible replay value due to the gun upgrades being carried over in NG+. It's so good, I have it for the Series X and the PS5.
I play the original on switch but just can’t get clicked with the annoying camera. But i bought the RE2/3/4 combo pack on my ps5. Can’t wait to dive in on RE4 soon after im done with Alan wake 2 lake house dlc and Silent Hill 2 remake
cried when i finished it, loved it start to finish. 10/10. its a great game, a great combination of action and horror.
@__jamiie Have you tried it in VR?
Thats smokes the Wii version for how much fun it is using the controllers to point and shoot. Add in having to reload and move on the run and its incredible. I can see why they want to keep making the games VR compatible as it elavates them to a whole new level.
I’ve always loved the RE games and they have been nailing it, both in terms of new original games or remakes. Looking forward to what they have for us in the future. Hoping their next remake will be Code Veronica.
@Ilyn Are you talking about the original RE4 or remake?
100% willing to state that this remake is astounding. But… I just couldn’t get into it enough to finish, and I loved the original! I don’t know… too much action? Not enough horror?
VIllage on the other hand—three times through!
I bought it last year and i love it although i wish Ada's campaign is part of the base game.
Now, bring on Code Veronica and 5 remake.
@ear_wig this remake has more horror than the og game
@__jamiie Remake RE4 in VR
I wonder how the switch 2 version will do
@Brundleflies21 What're ya buying?
It’s the 10th highest rated on PS5. I’ve got it but have this policy of “saving the best til last” aka working my way thru the turds first so hopefully I get round to it at some point
This game on VR2 is probably my top 5 experiences in gaming.
@J2theEzzo I'll read this message at a high price.
@Ilyn I haven't played remake 4 in VR yet but absolutely loved 7 and Village in VR so I'm sure I'll love that too.
Out of the versions of the original, I'd still rate the Wii version as best. I've played the original in VR on Quest but found it to be too clunky.
@__jamiie I didn't mind the Wii version, but tbh anything RE4 is great as the game itself was good at its core. The thing I enjoyed with the VR version is how it radically changes which weapons you use as things like the rifle with long scope are just so hard to aim when you factor in body shakes.
I've not played 7 in VR as they never made it VR2 compatible, and have 8 waiting in the wings. I kind of wish they would also give us a remake of 1 using that doesn't stick to tank controls as thats what really kills the game for me. Exploring the mansion in VR would be pretty interesting also.
@Ilyn I agree. Anything Resident Evil in VR would be something I'm interested in.
Did you ever play any of the RE Chronicles games on Wii or PS3? They're on-rails light gun games and I think they'd be brilliant in VR.
Purchased day 1 from the store, never known a game to load levels so quick.
@__jamiie Never played those, but they sound like something that would work in VR.
@Brundleflies21 heh heh heh, thank you.
