Sony and some of PlayStation's first-party studios have confirmed they're making donations to relief efforts relating to the ongoing Los Angeles fires.
They join other companies and entities that are providing financial support to help those providing aid and rebuilding services in the area.
In a statement on its social channels yesterday, PlayStation's parent company Sony said it will be giving $5 million to the cause:
"Los Angeles has been the home of our entertainment businesses for more than 35 years," reads a joint statement from Sony's Kenichiro Yoshida (chairman and CEO) and Hiroki Totoki (president and COO). "We will continue work with our local business leadership to determine how best Sony group can support relief and recovery efforts in the days ahead."
This has been followed today by pledges from Californian developers Santa Monica Studio, Insomniac Games, and Naughty Dog, all of which are joining Sony in supporting the community and local relief efforts.
Our thoughts and best wishes are with all those affected by the disaster.

@Americansamurai1 Come on man, seriously?
Good job Sony and Playstation studios! 👍🏼
@Americansamurai1 Does Sony have major studios and headquarters in North Carolina?
Top comment proves that Sony literally can't do anything without getting hate for it...
@ChrisDeku yeah insomniac has a studio there.

@LogicStrikesAgain what cause I asked a question? Sony has a studio in North Carolina.
@Americansamurai1 One secondary studio vs Calirfornia that's the home of PlayStation Headquarters and a multitude of major primary studios

Heartening to see, glad they're donating!
I'm hoping they're staying safe up there.
@Americansamurai1 Not cause you asked a question. Its because instead of focusing on the positive and appreciate the gesture, you immediately throw a whataboutism around.
No person or company is obligated to donate anything, so we can at least appreciate what they’re doing to help out.
To answer your other comment, as the article and their tweets state this has been their home and main base of their headquarters for 35+ years.
Also, Insomniac is mainly located in California. They created a small studio of 25 people in 2008 in North Carolina, which mainly worked on PS3 games, not even sure if still exists now.
And if it does, those employees and their families might not have been affected by the storm, and if they were i’m sure Sony probably helped them out as well.
Kudos for Sony but my pray for anyone in LA / California who got affected by the fire. I really understand their pain and stress because 12 years ago my house also got burnt down. I lost all my video games, comics, clothes, education certificates well pretty much everything except my family. Thanks God i have amazing neighbour, friends, and relatives who helped me a lot.
@Americansamurai1 Here's the list of Sony humanitarian assistance if you really want to know what country that Sony helped. The list update was last year November.

As a resident of California the gesture is appreciated. We actually get big forest fires every year so that was nothing new but not having any rain and tons of wind made it a true recipe for disaster. It also didn't help that leadership bungled the response at every turn -even sending us evacuation warnings just to say "just kidding, wrong place!" 30 minutes later- and made things much worse. Luckily I wasn't affected (besides the rotted air in my lungs) but my heart goes out to the people that lost everything in a day.

Nice to see this happening after all the terrible scenes witnessed over the last few days. Best wishes to all affected and all those tirelessly fighting to prevent more damage ❤️
@Americansamurai1 I don't know. It's a long list so you go check yourself.
Good on Sony, it's an awful situation and acts of kindness like that prove how life isn't only about profit.
What a nightmare. Stay safe out there!
@Americansamurai1 According to the list they have donated to hurricane Sandy and Katrina, also the wildfires in Hawaii. This year alone they have donated to 8 disasters around the world including but not limited to the devastating floods in Spain and the rest of Europe. Also to hurricanes in Bangladesh and Vietnam. Its a list of 70 disasters around the world that they have donated to through the years. But since you seem hellbent on knowing. No, hurricane Helene is not on their list of donations.

@Americansamurai1 any mention of Calirfornia and some people just can't help but lose sight of reality eh
I bet you're the type of guy that will often say "I'm sick of politics" too
@Americansamurai1 No effort at all, its all in the list. Im a fast reader 😉
@Americansamurai1 You dont have to appreciate, you can also focus on the negative, like things they didnt donate to. I’d advise you to see life from a more positive side though.
@Americansamurai1 "They do it as a publicity stunt, but no to certain causes"
If Sony don't announce they donate to the cause then some people gonna ask why Sony didn't donate to this disaster and claim this rich company doesn't care.
But if Sony announced they're helping then some people, like you here for example, gonna say "Oh they did it only for publicity stunt".
So damned if you do, damned if you don't huh?
Its been heartbreaking to see all the damage the fires have done, but it is of course heartwarming to see all the people and companies, including Sony and their studios, helping out those affected.

I just hope that the wildfire relief efforts actually make it to the people in need. There are many suffering with home/belonging loss not to mention potential injuries/death(s) in the family. It’s horrific what’s happening so I hope the support gets to the right people
@ChrisDeku @PuppetMaster @LogicStrikesAgain I'd be curious to know how much that dude's donated in the last year 🤔
Actually quite shocked we left the comments open on this one. Perhaps my mates across the pond aren't privy to just how politically charged this topic is here in the states.
@zupertramp Everything is politically charged in the states nowadays.
That wildfire is crazy.hope one of my favorite talk show host ricky lake is ok.word up son
A week ago today I watched from a distance as helicopters dropped water on a wildfire 2 blocks from my apartment building for 3+ hours. It was an amazing feat of heroism that they not only contained but put out the fire threatening a large area of apartment buildings.
Seeing support like this for the Los Angeles community is amazing. Major props to the video game community for stepping up, too.
Being from England i don’t experience these kind of natural disasters ever. It’s utterly devastating what’s happening out there and I hope things get better fast but from what I’ve heard about more strong winds I don’t think it will but 🤞. Props to Sony for sure they’ve certainly inspired me to make a donation if possible
I think the initial media coverage skewered the general public perception of the LA wildfires by focusing hard on the celebrities impacted... You know, the people who could just live in one of their other homes while their home insurance company picks up the bill for a rebuild, instead of focusing on Average Joe who doesn't have other homes and extensive insurance coverage to cover the cost. So good on Sony for contributing!

@ZeroSum 100%. Had they not focused on people that literally owned several other high-priced houses and properties, and this just being just one of the many, it would not have came across as so damn tone deaf. Especially in an economy where a lot of people can't afford to buy even one house.
Blame the media for this crappy take. Nobody wants to see anyone's life fortune go up in flames, but they really can't read a room, or maybe they can and knew exactly what they were doing.

Jesus WTF is wrong with the comment section on this site recently. At least 3 people (one with multiple) having comments removed for being inappropriate. Whatever your thoughts on California, the fires are a tragedy and this is not the time for petty arguments.
