At this year's Consumer Electronics Show, Sony has been demonstrating a new Future Immersive Entertainment Concept that aims to give participants a new interactive experience.
Though only at a conceptual level at this stage, a live demo allowed attendees to step into the world of The Last of Us and see it from a different perspective.
The experience essentially comprises a box room where every surface is a high-resolution crystal LED display, surrounding you on all sides by the game world. This, combined with immersive audio, haptic feedback, atmospherics, and "scent" aims to place you within an interactive environment more deeply than before. Yes, this means you'd be able to smell whatever game you're playing.
In a gameplay sequence seemingly made just for this proof of concept, participants are given a gun controller and aim and shoot at impending threats like Clickers. We'd be willing to bet they smell absolutely foul.
This isn't some new product or service that's ready to go, and is likely a long time from being ready for mass consumption. We could see this sort of thing popping up at theme parks or maybe arcades, but obviously given the space and technology required, it's gonna be an expensive endeavour if they pursue it further.
What are your thoughts on this conceptual tech from Sony? Would you be interested in immersing yourself in a game in this way? Discuss in the comments section below.

I will not be fooled again so I'll wait until the Pro version of this tech comes out
Whoever smelt it dealt it....
Edit: @Czar_Khastik I can't wait that long, I'll get the slim version.
Truly the most emotional and least technical journey in that world to date.
Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.
Let me guess... if it becomes a product it will require an ongoing subscription to replace smell cartridges or some such.
I work in a place where I can smell my enemy..and it's not a good smell either.
So it's like a lightgun game combined with the Unreal stage thing? A sound concept, definitely prefer to not have a VR set strapped to me head but also seems like you're stuck on the spot right now? Would be cool to have this is a motion chamber and make it on rails. Like, sit me in a car that someone is driving and have it bump and jostle as we go. That'd be rad.
Also not the world I would choose to smell given the choice.
Let's get an Overcooked one, a pizza cooking level, mmmm yes. That's what I want to smell, freshly baked pizza.
The DualSense 2 Controller is going to be wild!
They say that VR is a pretty immersive experience. Sony should have a look at this new technology, maybe one day they will even release own VR goggles for its PlayStation entertainment system.
Cant wait to try Action Henk with this π
My brain is sizzling like a fried egg trying to decipher what "scent" in scare quotes is supposed to mean.
@Ogbert I bet in the future they'll combine this with the walking matts for the final product. Have you seen these things? you can kind of walk around on top of it.
So you could have 2 different end products; one where you actually walk in the environment, duck for cover etc.
And another following your idea, would be awesome as well. Imagine if you could play with up to 4 friends. The car shakes and rumbles and as you drive, you feel like you're moving as everything moves around you. And even the driver can shoot as well. You can trade places, etc.
And as for the smells, imagine being able to smell the gunpowder, the jungle, dirt, rain etc. It would really trick your brain into believing you're actually there. Specially if you're in a car or something of the sort
Imagine using this tech piece while visiting redditβ¦
Absolute torture π«
No articles on the XYN Headset which allows easy 3D game creation and motion capture technology.
They seem to be doing everything except making new games
People = VR is too expensive
Sony = Hold my beer.
It should be a two way interaction. If I have to deal with gross smelling zombies, I want them to smell my farts and pass out.
Youβre just smelling Hulst.
Smelling Jill Valentines farts, sign me up for pre orders
Just an excuse for another remaster probably.
So basically smell-o-vision like nickelodeon used to do
@rjejr how weird... I'm watching TNG atm
Imagine the Valley of Defilement in smell-o-vision π³
@Czar_Khastik It better come with a disc drive this time!
@nessisonett Hulst's more of a slicker than a clicker.
Smellivision is realπΆ
Also that is really cool looking tech
For theme parks or movie/gaming companies for tracking setups I think this is cool. Not consumer use but that's fine, I'm fine with more business grade tech used in interesting ways to improve things.
Smell related things have been tried for years just making it worthwhile. I don't think much of it with blood or forests or whatever.
As if perfumes or scents of things Japan has done aren't weird as well I just go yeah no.
Kind of feels like without AR/VR or without 3D glasses kind of thing, very cool to simulate the experience and track interactions and how the screens cast to the screens and other factors. Very impressive.
Then again of all the dual screen use cases, done and dropped to this, let's open it gets used well and doesn't go away even if good use of possibilities for businesses.
In my opinion this has to be one of the coolest things to be able to experience and witness it just shows how much Sony can push the boundaries of immersion and what's possible now and in the future I'm ALL for it and would love to experience this with my kiddos and the fam..What a time to be alive π―π₯π―π₯π―π₯π―π₯π―π₯
Love for Sail had this tech back in β96.
