This author first played Genki’s seminal Tokyo Xtreme Racer on Dreamcast, but you may have a different history with the series, also known as Shutoko Battle.
The first games in the franchise launched on Super Famicom, but there were entries on the PS1 – Tokyo Highway Battle – and even one on the PS3.
It’s been almost 20 years since the last proper sequel, though, so it’s no real surprise an Early Access build of an all-new version has been taking Steam by storm. The title currently has Overwhelmingly Positive reviews, and has attracted all-time player peaks of over 15k.
All of this means Tokyo Xtreme Racer is almost assuredly back, and a PS5 port is inevitably going to do big business.
While Genki hasn’t specifically commented on consoles, it’s always said it’s “targeting PC first”, implying the likes of PlayStation will follow thereafter. It makes sense as, generally, PC is the best place to iterate on software still in Early Access.
The finished version roughly appears to be on track for a May 2025 release, so we could potentially start to hear about PS5 port plans later in the year.
Personally, we’re optimistic. From what we’ve seen of the new Tokyo Xtreme Racer, it looks like the perfect throwback – it’s just you and your opponent against the Tokyo Expressway, and we love that simplicity.
We’ll contact Genki and try and get an update on its plans for PlayStation, but do let us know if you’re itching for a console version of this racer in the comments section below.

I've still got my Dreamcast copy and play it from time to time, that and MSR were (still are) great fun. I'm gonna pick this up on Steam but I'd love to see it on console too, we need more of these racing games
@carlos82 I still have my DC copy of MSR but sadly sold Tokyo Xtreme Racer. 😭
@get2sammyb @carlos82 Damn MSR was so good! The VX220 on the cover
Holy s*** Genki is still around, that is a name I haven’t heard in decades.
Seriously need more arcade racers on ps5, will support any decent ones.
never heard of it til now . this article got me interested enough so i checked it out on steam , but there doesn’t seem to be any multiplayer ?? now im on the fence about it , but otherwise, it does look fun & i do need a (arcade) racer to play. the last one i somewhat enjoyed was NFS heat.
wasted my money on forza horizon 4 😒
Been looking for a good arcade racer for years. This looks promising.
Been playing this on PC and it's extremely addictive fun. Even got it working in VR with the UEVR mod for even more immersion. Seems a natural fit for consoles but would be also great for PSVR2 as think official VR might be on their roadmap.
Already picked up the early access on Steam and it's everything I hoped for, a return to pure gaming. No microtransactions, no dlc, just pure gaming in a single package.
You need to support Genki. They're trying to put fun back into gaming.
Absolutely no memories of this game. However... having driven many many many hours on the Shutoko (or just Shuto), I can say it's an interesting experience IRL. Most of the time, it's just a simple road, but if you've driving it at 4am, it takes on a surreal character...it's very well made road network. but it's also VERY narrow. And no... it's not the drifting paradise that is portrayed in movies. Unless you own a car-detailer/repairer.
The best challenge for the shutoko is to memorize the turn-offs (and exits), which you can approach quite quickly even at "normal" speeds. Because it can be like a subterranean maze as well.
My biggest disappointment was the Shutoko levels in GTSport/GT7... because (I assume building rights) there were many things they couldn't put in... without paying huge (tower-sized) licencing. I actually miss driving through that part of Tokyo (near Shiba-koen) because it's one of the major entry points underneath the CBD(?) of Tokyo.... and surprisingly little traffic for a city the size of Tokyo - at night.
Many memories... mostly fun... until you get to a JCT (junctions) heading out to Chiba, Saitama, or even out to Fujisan in particular on the weekend... where it can literally be a multihour carpark on very busy 'holidays'.
Maybe - I am talking myself into checking it out?
I'm cautiously optimistic, it looks good and it has been A LONG TIME, but all I remember about Genki's racing games back on PS2/PS3/360 was that they were really "Off" somehow... They just felt like doodoo to play (like SUPER Budget) compared to Need For Speed & Burnout.
Seriously EA, BRING BACK BURNOUT FFS 😒
Ehi Genki, what about a remake or remaster of Jade Cocoon?????
Played this so much on the Dreamcast. Good times.
@Mikey856 @get2sammyb glorious games and how could you Sammy

I played the early access version. The game is cool. But it clearly an early access game. The controls and the steam deck integration are not 100% implemented.
Enjoyed the Dreamcast version back in the day, so looking forward to this. Hopefully it keeps the faithful gameplay with some modern tweaks.
@carlos82 love that setup with the DC mate absolutely glorious!!! Do you have power stone?
@Mikey856 thanks and yes I've got that and the likes of Soul Calibur and Crazy Taxi, my little boy loves playing Ready 2 Rumble with me
I've got one of the Arcade 1up Outrun machines in my office. It's a sit down driving cab. There's a company that does a PC mod for it that I will be doing soon and it has the Dreamcast version of Tokyo Extreme 2. Can't wait to play it.
Loved this on the Dreamcast. Will definitely pick this up
Eh since the new one still looks like Dreamcast graphics I'll stick to my Dreamcast copy. My ps5 isn't a toilet for games that look older than me
How did you somehow, when briefly discussing the series’ history, did you glaringly omit the many PS2 variants - its’ most successful console reach by far, with the most titles??
@BloodyBlact (#12) we're friends now!
I'll definitely get this whenever it gets ported to PS5 as long as it turns out to be as good as the initial impressions are. Like others have said, there aren't enough really good arcade racers anymore.
I know it's not exactly the same, but I really miss Burnout.
@Gooseman42 Just checked Paradise Decay's video on it and I'll be getting involved for sure! Been looking both for something else to use my wheel setup and something with traffic on the roads.
It's ok, it's the old format which is fine to see games of that type appear and this IP, but I prefer the Drift sub series so no interest to me this entry.
Or games like PGR (played MSR and it's alright for a earlier version of PGR1). Or OnRush or other older arcade racers.
So I picked not interested but I respect the revival/return as it adds the angle of racing not covered in years, which I really appreciate.
It's like high climbs not seeing any in years then going oh we have V Rally 4 doing that now or the closest you get with stages in WRC or others while most cover more typical terrain types or event types.
Racing games to me are so event barren or lacking personality that I just don't care for modern ones I'm playing old ones I never came across before and having a blast there not the modern era.
Even then V Rally 4 is fine of event variety but still rather boring, the grinding to get to other events, other cars and cups is just so repetitive or so eh of event access to pay (kind of like R Racing Evolution or another game i forget right now that did it as well) I've seen the same low end events due to my preference of access to all event types with the entry vehicles (buying them all grinding credits) for each so it is taking longer but at the same time besides practicing and getting used to the same old events I do find the structure while different still very boring and lacking besides my approach I choose to play it as being my own fault.
It's like Midnight Club LA (from a later entry I'd expect better events, when Smuggler's Run 2 was more fun than MD that's saying something people don't want to hear) I went oh highways and other types of events so repetitive but "different" of a highway or lower streets or otherwise besides pink slips. It felt like playing a modern era racing game but from years ago, the event types felt like a joke they barely changed of rules or excitement. I gave up on it very quickly.
Jucied 2 had more rules/goals in it and I found it way more fun besides being linear circuits/menus. Burnout Paradise with stunts, takedowns, survival and more events was better in comparison I just got lost with the map all the time and prefer the linear games.
Better than most boring open world racers these days I've seen they are empty, eh pacing of events to do over and over and boring things to do in them.
Having more fun playing old ones never played before not modern ones. Then again only getting into PS4 era NFS games and they are..... ok. Prefer Carbon even and I only got it months ago and ended my time with the latter part of it.
Waiting since I first heard about it a few month ago. This will be my GOTY easily. The only thing that could challenge this would be Ridge Racer 8 or another THPS Remake.
Man I used to love this game on Dreamcast.
Still got my copies of the first 2 on the Dreamcast and 4 on the PS2. To me may be the best racing game on the Dreamcast highly addicting MSR also good. Hope they also consider making a sequel to Dreamcast Super Magnetic Neo. Very hard in the end but still memorable.
I have no knowledge of the series but after craving a good arcade racing game, saw the excitement for this and I am enjoying the hell out of it! Crazy that an Early Access game has enough content. I do wish it would have split screen, like any old classic racing game would but hopefully in the future.
There's so many classics on the steam deck I might get one, I had tokyo challenge on the dc back in the day it's awsome!
