Vampire Survivors developer Poncle has acknowledged one of the small issues facing the inevitable adaptation of such a successful IP, which is leaning towards being a film in favour of an animated TV series (yes, really). A simple game to pick up and play, its lack of story, characters, and plot is proving challenging to adapt.
As chronicled by IGN, a "live-action film adaptation" is currently in the works; originally conceived as an animated series, at some stage, it was determined that Vampire Survivors deserved the premium treatment. We don't detect a hint of irony in the following statement from Poncle:
"As mentioned last year, rather than jumping the gun and making stuff for the sake of making it, we have preferred to wait to find partners that felt right, especially because to make anything that isn't a video game out of Vampire Survivors requires good ideas, creativity, and that quirky knowledge of the game. That is a very difficult triplet to get 100% right."
That said, the extremely successful solo dev would know what's best and at least seems to understand the ridiculousness of the prospect: "Please remember the game has no plot — it doesn't? — so nobody can really anticipate how a film about it is going to be. That is part of what makes it exciting."

This game is insanely addictive.
It could probably just be John Wick 2 or Crank with more shooting than hand to hand - what was the plot to them? Who knows. Were they great action films? Absolutely. They need to hire Danny DeVito as the lead, though.
It borrows a lot and I mean A LOT from Castlevania (to the point they tossed in Castlevania as DLC) so I can see the difficulty in a movie adaptation. If you stick close to the game's lore, it'll probably feel like Castlevania. If you don't, then it will feel like the film just has the name slapped on it.
Uwe Boll has entered the chat…
This feels a bit pointless when we already have the excellent Netflix adaptation of Castlevania.
@Hyena_socks The biggest issue and biggest positive on the JW sequels is how much world building, lore and plot there is. Crank is bonkers and great.
I get that studios want to make all the money, but does every IP need a movie? 😂
A kid from New Jersey, his father killed by a vampire, revenge story with a robot sidekick. Slap on an 80s training montage video and boom there’s your movie
@LordFunkalot I can get behind this
I don't think this game needs a live act movie adaptation.
Why would anyone want a live action movie adaption of this game is beyond any comprehension.
Having no plot is usually better and less constraining for the people making the movie, but we'll see.
The extreme lack of vampires doesn’t help either. Seriously, not everything needs a movie adaptation! Fantastically addictive game though
Edit: Posting before reading comments, I see most people agree
What's with the urge to turn EVERYTHING into a movie? Irish Spring soap, the cinematic universe.
Why do they have to make movies out of nearly every video game going have they run out of ideas.
@Luna-Harmony
That's the problem with movie companies these days, the lack of imagination and too scared to think outside of the box. Gone are the quirky movies of the 80s and early 90s action movies.
Does everything need to have some film or TV adaption these days? Especially a game that came out not that long ago and I’ve barely even heard of? Every time an article pops up for this I think it’s Darkstalkers, the third game being called Vampire SAVIOR in Japan. Can’t games just be games anymore? Don’t most of these film/TV adaptations just suck?
