Is it fair to say Mai Shiranui is the most anticipated Street Fighter 6 addition to date? The buxom Fatal Fury heroine is certainly up there, right?
Capcom has released a six-minute gameplay guide trailer which shows off all the ways you can use the new character, and she looks like a ton of fun.
We’re big fans [Pun intended – Ed] of her projectiles, which bounce up into the air on impact and can be timed into combos. We also generally love how fast she moves.

Mai is the third character in Season 2 of Street Fighter 6, which will be rounded out by the addition of Street Fighter 3 stalwart Elena later in the year.
She’ll be available to play from 5th February. Will her addition be pulling you back to this modern Capcom classic?

Prepare for Mai army in ranked match
Mai has always been a treat.
Definitely clutching for the double entendre on this one.... sad... so sad.
Would’ve preferred actual SF characters. i couldn’t care less about randoms from dead franchises wasting slots
@nomither6 Both of the franchises that Mai consistantly appears in, Fatal Fury and KOF, aren't dead. KOF got its last game in 2022, and got its most recent DLC characters on December 12th, 2024. Fatal Fury's new game, City of the Wolves, is releasing on April 21st, 2025, and according to devs, will get at least three seasons of DLC.
Now, I do completely understand being annoyed at crossover characters. The new Fatal Fury already has two of its first season's DLC characters confirmed to be Ken and Chun-Li, which I'd personally somewhat prefer to be Fatal Fury characters, and heck, SF6 getting a playable Sakura might actually convince me to buy the game. This is mainly just to say, Terry and Mai aren't randoms, and aren't from a dead franchise.
@nomither6 Good thing you're in the minority then
@alexybubble yes youre right; i’m just speaking hyperbole and metaphorically. mai and terry are “randoms” in the sense of they’re not street fighter characters and/or part of the franchise or lore. And while KOF and uh..Fatal Fury(?) aren’t “dead” , i’m sure they’re very niche compared to SF/MK/MvC/Tekken
@nomither6 Please tell me you did not just insult Terry Bogard from Super Smash Bros!
Joking please nobody kill me. The SNK characters are clearly a labour of love for the SF6 team. I think they would be less polarising if they arrived late in the game’s lifespan and not while players are anxious for SF characters to return in what are smaller content seasons compared to less time.
@nomither6 That, I'll pretty much give you. I'd still say they aren't exactly randoms due to the CvS duology giving them some defined history with the SF cast, but yeah. And again, I completely get it; with a cast as big as Street Fighter's, there are plenty of characters that people want that'll probably never get in, when Terry and Mai did, and that does suck. I just hope that the rumored Super Street Fighter 6 comes with a few new non-DLC characters of its own; it'd at least partially help to rectify some of the missing fan favorites and potentially even give some room for some weirder picks that'd otherwise be pushed out by the missing faces.
@nomither6 Fatal Fury isn't dead though with Garou: City of the Wolves schedule to release this April.
And one of the biggest reason why they choose Terry and Mai as guest characters is because Fatal Fury creator, Takashi Nishiyama, was also Street Fighter creator. Nishiyama created Street Fighter I back in 1987 but after that he left Capcom and joined SNK to created Fatal Fury. So Street Fighter and Fatal Fury are like brothers.
I personally agreed with you that the two slots should be for SF characters. But at least Terry and Mai are pure fighting games characters and not characters like Conan, Ghostface, Terminator, or Rambo that doesn't have anything to do with fighting games.
Nice to see Mai faithfully represented.
@nomither6 City of the Wolves is coming out, for one. That's a sequel to one of the best fighters ever ever. The fact that SNK is even invoking MOTW means they are ready to step up.
Then, we have the CVS collection coming up. They are either teasing something or we are absolutely eating right now.
It's Mai, gloriously animated, fighting SF characters...what in the world is there to complain about?
@LikelySatan @PuppetMaster you guys gotta excuse me for my hyperbolic statements , i didn’t mean it in a general sense & i’m just a casual when it comes to the FGC. outside of SF/MK/Tekken/MvC i’m ignorant to any other franchises and behind the scenes activities.
to answer satans question , im getting tired of guests in games especially when the characters from their own franchises aren’t in yet . SF6 is missing a lot of my favorites . i couldn’t care less about KoF
just my opinion
Really looking forward to her. She and Terry are my mains in KOF so I kinda in a way got my wish in terms of the crossover if you will. They did a great job with Terry in SF6 and Mai is looking like one of her best iterations yet.
I wouldn't say I'm highly anticipating her as I don't really like SNK games but I'll admit she does look fun to play. Much more interested in playing as her than I ever was with Terry or Bison. I got plenty of rental character tokens to burn so I might as well give her a try.
I'm mostly just happy we are one step closer to a hopefully more appealing selection of characters for season 3 as none of the characters in season 2 really speak to me personally.
What’s not to like!?
Mai Shiranui and Chun-Li.....hmmmmmm.
Sorry, drifted off for a moment there and have totally forgotten what I was going to write.
@alexybubble
Where's this rumour coming from? Non DLC characters exclusive to a brand new version of the game will never happen as that'd fracture the playerbase which in turn would annoy a lot of existing owners and diminish the lifespan of the game.
And they're never going to spend the time and money developing new characters and then artificially gate them away from potential customers (AKA the millions of people who have already demonstrated they're willing to pay money for the game).
@nomither6 i'm sure you'll see more characters coming to the game , but it is still nice to see snk stuff live on , and it does seem to have a resurgence as of late with a new fatal fury game coming out , along with the recent king of fighter games , personally i would love to see another snk vs cacom game.
Would love to have actual Street Fighter characters as DLC, but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t looking forward to Mai coming. She as always been a favorite of mine in KOF.
My favorite SNK character ever! Will surely be labbing her for a while - I hope she matches my play style more than Terry, as he took too much thinking and fighting my instinct for me and felt unnatural
@twitchtvpat just seems like they’re releasing characters so slow with sf6 , i pretty much have no main character in this game yet
@MrPeanutbutterz Super Street Fighter 6 is the rumor, the extra characters thing is just my personal copium. In all likelihood, its just going to be SF6's equivalent of SF5 arcade edition. I'm just praying that this isn't going to be like SF5 where we were still getting major faces in the 5th season of DLC, as much as I know that that's probably not going to happen. I want some weirdos, bring back Eagle or Remy or something, someone nobody is going is going to expect. But no, its inevitably going to be big faces all the way down.
@alexybubble DLC codes in a box will be the height of it, I think.
I'm honestly cool with some of the mainstays being missing. Not every game needs to have every character. Like I'm kinda glad Sagat isn't around yet as there's already four shoto-type characters in the game. I don't see Balrog or Dudley showing up anytime soon as we have Ed.
I'm glad too that Elena is the last character this season. I didn't enjoy her in SF3, but she's not the typical character, and they've killed it with all of the characters' gameplay designs so far. Let them cook, I feel.
@nomither6 They're about to release their 25th character - you not being able to pick a main out of the other 24 is a distinctly "you" problem, not Capcom's.
Big fans so I guess ur a breast man 😉
