Wuthering Waves has shot straight to the top of the PS Store’s best sellers list in Japan, although obviously this is purely ranking downloads as the game is free-to-play. The title sits just one place behind Genshin Impact in second, which just received a highly anticipated character, Mavuika.
For years there’s been a lot of hand-wringing over PS5’s dreadful software showings in the Weekly Famitsu physical sales charts. Often, the top ten is dominated by Nintendo games. Many wonder what PlayStation owners in Japan are actually playing!
The answer is free-to-play gachas, with Zenless Zone Zero also sitting in third on the PS Store best sellers list, behind the aforementioned Genshin Impact and Wuthering Waves. Honkai: Star Rail is a little further down in ninth. Surprisingly, Infinity Nikki is a long way down the list.
In the US, Wuthering Waves currently sits 14th on the best sellers list, with free-to-play juggernauts like Roblox, Marvel Rivals, and Fortnite all above it.
That’s not a bad result really, and while these gacha games aren’t quite as popular overseas as they are in Asia, it proves there’s an increasingly substantial market for them on console.

I'm giving it a fair shake but ZZZ's combat has spoiled me. I don't think I'll wind up sticking with this one long term.
Ugly visual aesthetic. No thanks.
This site should just rebrand to a Gacha site.
It's not grabbing me like I thought but I said the same about zzz before it became the one I most look forward to logging into every day. So I'll keep going for now but I really do not like the character designs all that much lol
"Wuthering Waves has shot straight to the top of the PS Store’s best sellers list in Japan.."
What's the point of including F2P games in a best sellers list? Everyone and their dog is going to download a decent and hyped F2P game just to see if it's any good. It's like Facebook users actually thinking they actually have hundreds of friends.
Just tried it and it really isn't that far off to Genshin in terms of gameplay and mechanics. Nothing too special for me to keep going on, then again, that's how it felt to me when I started Genshin when it first released
I generally prefer ZZZ for the more condensed nature, still - outside of a few hours each weekend clearing out the weeklies, and maybe a few side missions or event things, its nice having the 'daily checklist' being a short, 5 minute stop-in. As much as I enjoyed Genshin and later Star Rail, the more drawn-out daily tasks become tiresome pretty quickly if I just wanted to do them as an aside between life tasks or playing something else.
That said, while WuWa shamelessly borrows a lot from Genshin, the changes that they have made definitely make it feel like more than a simple clone, at least. The additional movement options and tools (particularly wall-running to more quickly navigate surfaces) work nicely, swapping out the usual accessory-hunt for a monster-hunt is an interesting twist on the tried-and-tested formula, etc.
The one thing I'll say about Wuthering Waves is at least they're less coy about making their characters sexy, and the characters (mostly) look at little older.
Genshin has so many of those awful sexless-sexy anime designs where they've got massive tits but look and act like they'd blush if they held hands with someone.

@DogPark mate, it's 24/7 news on gaming websites. They've got to create articles out of all sorts of sources to keep the clicks going. That's why if someone on reddit says a game made him sneeze it gets reported on. PS aren't being paid to promote WW, but they do get paid if you click on the article to ask the question 😁
I'll try it out, genshin just didn't capture me with it's story.
F2p gacha = instant skip
@riceNpea Sorry, I think that's a little naive. I mean there are a ton of minor little things to write about on any given day given your example, but the number of posts about the gacha seems... suspect to me. You're free to disagree of course!
@Sequel Your argument might make some sense had I argued that they not cover gacha games at all, but I did not.
@DogPark I doubt this site would stake it's entire reputation on whatever pittance some gacha publisher was willing to pay for a fluff piece.
In the grand scheme of things, downloads don't matter over a single platform. @get2sammyb
For example, last month Nikki has earned ~$20m on one single platform for it's debut.
All the gargantuas are no exception. 💪
Sorry for the usual late input, as ALL OF US are very busy enjoying all the updates over here 🌊🔥✨
Now waiting Kuro for the ray tracing treatment~✌️
Once you understand how the combat synergies and character specialties work, WuWa has a deeply immersive combat experience (Intro & Outro Skills). Even certain Echo skills buff the whole team. I tried out Genshin and ZZz and neither could keep me. I still play HSR though as it's the only decent turn based jrpg I like at the mo.
I don't play any of these gacha games, but I do enjoy that Push Square covers them (the big ones) with consistency. If that's what Sammy's playing - and we all know that MANY others are, too - then they're newsworthy.
I feel like I would need to focus almost entirely on them, ignoring other games, if I jumped in. Sammy's GOTY list kinda confirmed that. But these games are super relevant, and it's cool to see how they're evolving over time.
As for me - too much backlog to get through. But I'm making progress lately!

I stayed with WuWa after i had my doubts, but it has so much Quality of Life compared to Hoyoverse.
I disliked the ZZZ Style and quited after few days, but WuWas Visuals are stunning beautiful, daily effort is a minimum, gameplay is extremly fun and world/story is superb.
Only negative i have is the Story 'telling' - chinese mystery non-explaining way of introduction, you only get glims piece by piece. But they listended to the audience and got better with the DLC - high hopes!
Finally playing on PS
I tried Infinity Nikki for a few hours but just can't get into the whole gacha thing so uninstalled it. I get these games are FTP but can't help but feel Infinity Nikki would have been off as a stand alone paid retail game without any gacha involved.
Also it doesn't help there are just too many decent games out there to play now without my attention wandering to these FTP titles.
@ATaco No offense but Wuthering Waves combat is better than ZZZ.
@bizzysgs
You say it as if its a fact. Ultimately opinions will vary but I prefer the more DMC style combat of ZZZ to WuWa.
Oh yeah I played three hours of the game with my exciting account, and lol the game said you played that many hours I said to the game shut up I just whant to play a little bit more.
@JohntheRaptor would you prefer paid gacha?
@Judal27 I had the same experience with ZZZ, I'll keep going for a bit.
@CsMs2o I love that ZZZ is a super small time commitment, it allowed me to try WuWa.
@bizzysgs Matter of opinion. So far ZZZ feels better, but we'll see.
@Aladin_Run just give it a try ^^
I mean i love HSR and also play Genshin, ZZZ was just not my style, tho i admit some game elemets were great.
Ultimatly all games come down to personal prefrence, just the boundarys might compare.
Quality of Life, Timeconsume and efforts. All 3 defently nice on WuWa. If compareable HSR comes closed on daily business.
@CsMs2o I need to unlock dailies so I can judge for myself how difficult it would be to keep up. Sadly it seems like it's in Act 3 🥲
I'm not pausing ZZZ yet, I'm still fully invested. I'll have to balance Rebirth, ZZZ and WuWa now 😅
