Capcom makes damn good video games, but for years now, the publisher's peddled dodgy microtransactions — often to the detriment of the titles that they're attached to.
And the newly-released Monster Hunter Wilds is no different. Just like in 2018's Monster Hunter World, players need to pay up with real money if they want to make cosmetic edits to their character or companion Palico.
To be clear, the first edit — having already created your custom hunter right at the start of the game — is free. But beyond that, you'll need to cough up $5.99 / £5.79 for a 'Character Edit Voucher' three-pack on the PS Store.
Wilds' character creator is fairly in-depth, and your hero shows up in just about every cutscene throughout the campaign — so if you spot something you'd like to change, you better get it right on your first try.
Between these vouchers, Devil May Cry 5's red orbs currency, and the kerfuffle surrounding Dragon's Dogma 2's paid consumables, Capcom's made a frustrating habit of flogging stuff that most fans would deem unnecessary.
And the thing is, these microtransactions are typically unavailable during the game's review period. To be fair, Capcom did outline these add-ons previously, but reviewers still don't get to actually experience what's for sale until the public launch, when everything is live on the PS Store.
What do you think of this? Should you really have to pay in order to make edits to your custom character? Let out a sigh in the comments section below.

I remember hearing about this in past games. And I was like. Nope. Not even going to check it out.
I gave up on this game hearing rumours about no microtransactions but this is wonderful news
I'm lucky that I don't care about cosmetics, so it won't affect me. However, they should really be hammered for the scummy practice of keeping them hidden till reviews are out.
It’s cosmetic only. Doesn’t affect the game in the slightest so far better than many MTX in most games.
I think most people would be happy if MTX was limited to just cosmetic
Waiter! Waiter! More microtransactions, please!
Curse you Oblivion Horsey and the madness you’ve created
While the dlc wasn't available during the review period which isn't ideal, the beta definitely showed "Character/Palico Voucher" quantity in the menu UI. Also it's worth mentioning that you could always edit hair styles and make up/tattoos/scars for free. I don't agree with Capcom on this, but just pointing out all facts.
Charging $$$ to edit your character is top-tier sleazy.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner this isn’t “cosmetic only”
It’s locking the entire idea of changing your character at all behind single use paid vouchers.
It’s not like a custome pack in a game, it’s more you buy a custome and then pay for the privilege to change change to it once and if you don’t like it you have to pay again to change back.
I don't really care, it just gives me more incentive to replay the game with a new character.
Jokes on you Crapcom, I'll just delete my whole save file and start my character from scratch, you sleazy *****.
I'm interested in knowing if people would rather have character customization locked behind a pay wall or not having it at all. Games still come out where once you create your character that's it. No changing.
As someone with over 170 hours in Infinity Nikki, a dress up game, and I almost never change clothes or “pull banners” I don’t think I’ll be spending any money to edit my character in MHW.😂
I remember the days when "cosmetic changes" were a basic expectation of a game. Now corpos are patted on the back for charging extra money for basic "cosmetic only" features...that being said if they magically had a MTX for a fully optimized copy of the game, I'd bite
"Between these vouchers, Devil May Cry 5's red orbs currency"
I don't agree with the practice. But I never spend a single dime for Red Orbs when Dr Faust can easily generate unlimited supply of Red Orbs. So the mtx didn't bother me.
Crazy how there's people out there who would defend this. Crazy how it reviewed so well too. Like I said in another post, the game is a big technical mess and the Digital Foundry video confirms that, along with confirming that it also still has the textures of a PS3 game.
Is it like horse armour level of ridiculousness?
@darkswabber You literally just described "cosmetic only."
So the game has performance problems on all platforms and is full of micro transactions, so remind me why it's getting universal acclaim again? Not hating just asking.
@Oram77 Might be fun if you think about it.
Next Street Fighter you prolly have to buy every single attack for every character after paying full price for the game. Combos they ll charge you extra.
£5.79 is wild. If it was 50p I’d still say it was nonsense but that’s an absurd price.
@MaelysLeFleau It can be fun to play sure, but other games like STALKER 2 got eaten alive for performance issues, and MTXs should never get praised and should lower the score by one at least.
This is a preferable thing. I'd much, much rather a game charge for completely pointless and optional cosmetic stuff and deliver free gameplay dlc.
@MaelysLeFleau to me “cosmetic only” is a cosmetic you buy once and can change to whenever you want. Not this
@darkswabber so you are agreeing it’s cosmetic then?
Because absolutely nothing you have mentioned affects anything other than cosmetics.
You can’t buy weapons, progression etc
As is their doggy doo performance.
Charging for a character edit voucher is really dumb and always has been.
Hopefully they can use the money to better optimise there games

It's ridiculous charging to change your character's appearance in a full priced game.
@breakneck If you believe you'll ever get a business to go with, "Well it'll already be profitable without this," over, "As a business we should try to make as much money as possible," then I absolutely have no idea what to tell you.
Pretty shocking that this is the level of insanity that DLC/microtransactions have reached. I'll simply just not buy the game or any others made by Crapcom. No skin off my nose.
So if you look at the newsletter they published in-game, vouchers to edit your palico and hunter will be given if you do some events and quests. They already gave 2 vouchers for free. My intuition is that if you are patient and follow the online events, you will get for free what impatient people would pay for.
@PuppetMaster - I will never understand why Orb MTX ever came to DMC. It started in DMC4 SE, a game that actually increased Orb drops lol. I made an Orb farm vid for SE back in the day that netted 300k Red Orbs in 30 minutes. The same amount they were selling for £1.79p. Capcom gonna Capcom.

While I agree that ANY microtransactions that are withheld until AFTER the early-review period for a game is over is an extremely scummy practice...For the most part, the microtransactions that Capcom includes in their game are just baffling, like the red orbs in Devil May Cry 5. I'll never understand why someone would pay to play a game less after they already paid to play it.
That is indeed a crappy microtransaction, there's no end to the greed of executives in these companies. Next thing we'll hear is half the dev team is made redundant. Disappointing to hear about this given the good reviews. Did they add it in after the reviews went live too?
Well, there's FAR worse going on in the world than having the option to pay for a character edit voucher pack, which you can pick up during some event quests etc anyway. People just don't read the small print.
And, like the option to pay 99c or whatever for an extra Wakestone or two in Dragon's Dogma, they only exist as an easy access item for the impatient since you can get them in-game anyway. When you have other companies out there shilling character skins for $20 or shoes for $10 and release broken, incomplete games, I find it hard to sh*t on Capcom when MH has always been a polished, complete game that delivers big on content... ^_^
@IceClimbersMain Said no one ever.
By all means sell clothes, weapon skins or other cosmetics. There will always be people willing to part with cash for a cool look. But charging to actually make changes? Step too far guys. You can keep your tight little game. You’re already charging between £65-£100 depending on version. Then there’ll be the inevitable dlc. I’d like to know from someone within the industry; how hard is it for a major title like this to make a profit?
