Bob Gale, co-creator of the beloved Back to the Future franchise, has mentioned that a new video game is in the works.
Speaking in an interview on cleveland.com (paywall), the writer/producer talks about Back to the Future projects in the pipeline, including a game.
"We’ve got a shot at a new video game based on Back to the Future," he says, but unfortunately can't elaborate. "I don’t want to tell you any more than that because I’m not allowed to, but this is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. Knock on wood that it will happen."
He also notes that 2025 is the 40th anniversary of the original movie, teasing "some events" and other projects as part of a celebration.
The last video game conversion for the franchise was Back to the Future: The Game, an episodic narrative adventure from Telltale Games, released on PS3 and PS4.
It's obviously unclear what the mystery game will be like, but hopefully it won't be too long before it comes to light. Perhaps it'll be unveiled as part of the 40th anniversary festivities.

This has massive potential or it's GameMill Entertainment.
Don't F it up. Don't F it up. And get the original cast for the voices.
I'm still disappointed the Telltale game was delisted (among others). I had it in my PS3 backlog along with their Jurassic Park game. Sold my PS3 hoping I could still download it on PS4 but nope. Hopefully they're not gone forever. This new game better be faithful to the source material!
@16BitHero There was a PS4 version as well. Might be able to find a physical copy somewhere. Sucks it was delisted, it was a great game.
Loved the Telltale game. The guy who played Marty was almost indistinguishable from Michael J Fox, who also played a character in the game in the last episode. Plus they had Christopher Lloyd back as well. Going to have to dig it up now.
ONE POINT ONE MILLION GIGAWATTS!?!?!?!
@Steeleye50 Physical PS4 version is really expensive now. Actually cheaper to buy a PS3 copy.
Really hope this is a decent game and not some cheap cash-in. Love me some BTTF!
As a general rule most Back to the Future games have been borderline terrible over the years.
However seeing as it's my favourite film trilogy of all time I can't help but be a little bit excited by this news
@VeldinX hopefully it will be. They've been pretty strict about what they release so there's a good chance.
@Member_the_game i really enjoyed the telltale game
@SJR
Yeah that wasn't bad to be fair, I was referring more to alot of the cash grab NES and old Amiga games (showing my age now haha 😆)
@Blauwe_Chimay As much I want them to get the original cast. I think it time for some new blood when it comes to these characters. Especially since video games development takes ages now, and none of the actors are getting any younger.
@Member_the_game That game was bad on so many levels. The SNES Back to the Future II game. I wanted it for ages because I liked the look of the screenshots. I wasn’t happy in the end. Haha.
The Telltale game I 100% on the PS3, I remember forcing my way through most of it. But it was ok.
@BusyOlf You made me think I had been saying it wrong for the past (almost) 40 years. Hahahaha. 1.21 Gigawatts.
Troy Baker to voice the entire cast perfectly.
@SoulChimera
The only one (apart from the more recent PS3 game) I can properly remember was Back to the Future 3, the 1st level was Doc on a horse chasing after Clara before she fell down the ravine.
There was another level where Marty was throwing pies outside of a saloon bar
That would be lovely! I enjoyed the TellTale game tremendously! Let's hope Christopher Lloyd is doing voicework again. I don't think we can realistically expect Michael J. Fox to do the same, but his voice double in the TellTale games (A.J. LoCascio) did an excellent job!
Let's hope it is a real game in the likes of The Ghostbusters Video Game and not some COD DLC skins crossover.
@AverageGamer
Fox, Loyd, Thompson, ... If they want a bttf game they need the original cast. Take a look at the Robocop game, original cast and that game was pure fan service!
@Blauwe_Chimay Take a look at Indiana Jones… We don’t need the original cast for a game to be good.
@AverageGamer
Will play it when it's on ps5. Don't have An Xbox so I Cant comment.
If Robocop can have the og voices, let's hope we have og voices on bttf.
Here hoping it's ps exclusive
I don't know man... That Telltale game was so mid. Just leave the good stuff alone!
Its weird because when they gave away the game from the PS3 online hack back in the day the telltale game they gave the UK version was all in chapters only it had no platinum but they actually released a version with a platinum under 1 banner. On my profile it's under each chapter banner for trophies to earn and there was 5 I enjoyed that game so much
@Nakatomi_Uk yeah the PS4 version was an anniversary release, they gave it a new set of trophies, including a platinum. Price of the physical game has rocketed recently though.
I remember that PS3 hack, they let you pick two(I think?) games from a list. I don't remember bttf on it, though I'd already bought it so maybe I didn't pay it any mind.
I actually just played the Telltale game for the first time a little over a week ago. As a massive Telltale fan and as someone that really enjoyed the movies, I'm shocked at how genuinely terrible of a game it was. No exaggeration, it was one of the worst AAA games ever made (or AA I'm not really sure what pre-Walking Dead Telltale counted as).
