When is Insomniac Games going to make another Resistance game? Well, it sounds like the studio tried, but it didn't get the green light from Sony.
In a wider interview with Kinda Funny Games (embedded), Ted Price, who will soon depart his position as CEO, opened up about PS3's sci-fi first-person shooter series, revealing that a fourth mainline Resistance game was pitched to Sony, but ultimately rejected.
"We did pitch [Resistance 4], and it was a wonderful concept," Price says, explaining that "in terms of timing and market opportunity, [it] didn't work out".
He says the pitch was "the result of a lot of Insomniac team members being passionate about extending the story further".
Price says he thinks the series "has set up a really cool alternate history base where anything can happen", using the Chimera's origins and next steps as examples for further stories. "We spent a lot of time working on backstory, and brainstorming on where we could take this in the future," he says.
He reflects fondly on the development of the series; Price was creative director on the first two titles. "I'll remember many many moments, good and bad. It taught us all a lot about how we could elevate ourselves in some pretty difficult situations."
Finally, he acknowledges that fans have been calling out for more games, but can't say for sure if it'll ever happen. "We love the fan response, and we know fans ask us pretty regularly if we're gonna do another Resistance."
So, Insomniac was intent on producing another major Resistance title, but Sony gave the pitch the thumbs down. There's no knowing whether a different pitch would also be rejected, so we suppose it's not impossible to see the series return in future.

I mean the third game didn't sell so it's no surprise that Sony wanted to move on.
I can understand why though, the sales weren't good enough infact Resistance 3 only sold 180,000 in its first month on sale and 1.5 million lifetime sales. It's pretty obvious no matter what people say there isn't enough demand for this series.
I dont think Resistance 3 sold very well which would explain it. Would love a fresh reboot to Resistance or maybe a remake of the first, instead of Resistance 4
Many reasons as to why Sony decided this, it could be because of reasons above, that the previous game didnt sell well. It might also be that multiple games got pitched which were just better? We also don’t know when this was pitched, maybe it was just wrong timing for it.
Personally i’d welcome a Resistance 4, i think the setting is still very compelling and even though it might not have sold so well years ago, i can see a new game doing well. Not to mention Sony really needs a homegrown FPS shooter in its current portfolio
Uuuum huh? Ex-Exuse me everyone I'm gonna....I'm gonna go scream into a pillow
A shame they weren’t able to do one more, especially if they had a clear idea on what they wanted to do with it, but I do agree that, given how saturated the market was at the time with FPS and post-apocalyptic games, the timing probably wasn’t right (a factor that likely contributed to the previous game’s low sales).
That said, if anyone at Insomniac wants to do one now, it might do alright.
After 3 or 4 entries it's usually better to walk away, let the team re-energise and try something new before the franchise slides into diminishing returns. As much as I enjoyed the Resistance series Sony made the right call, Insomniac has gone from strength to strength while in comparison just look at how Gears and Halo have struggled since their same gen heydays.
A live service resistance might go down well sony 😂
I mean, the series is fine and all and I do like the games, but, like Killzone or Infamous, it’s not the zenith of Sony’s first party games, not even during the PS3 era. I think that those games helped establish the vision of where PlayStation would go during the PS4 era, but were largely just good games rather than true classics, and I think the review scores and sales numbers back that up.
@UltimateOtaku91 yeah the games were fun but not massive successes. They also told a complete story so a 4th would either feel superfluous or ended on another cliffhanger that definitely wouldn’t have gotten resolved. Probably would have ended up like Killzone Shadowfall in that it wasn’t bad, just not really worth it
Sony always say no to good games this and days gone 2
A trilogy collection on PS5 would be nice
Recently replayed the trilogy and they are still great games. Although the 2nd game not having a weapon wheel really bugged me
Resistance and Motorstorm, 2 fantastic PS3 franchises.
News game made for PS5 from the ground up would probably play and look amazing.
And get me far more excited about PS5 than I am now.
people moan but 2 million people bought resistance 3 in this day and age sony will not fund a game for those sales
Loved the Resistance games! Please Sony give us:
I would love a new one, but if no interest from Sony, how about a remake or remaster of the trilogy for PS5?
Sony needs to remaster these games with an optional VR mode. Those imaginative weapons are just perfect for VR.
@Ajfennell77 Sony didnt even get a pitch for Days Gone 2. It was stopped at Bend studio, most of Bend employees wanted to move on.
The story ended with 3, I wasn't fussed on the way it ended but it ended so I say despite how much I loved the series I'd leave it be and move onto new things.
@Jswift56 Don't, just don't tempt them 😀
A remaster of the trilogy & Retribution would be cool but i understand why Sony didn't greenlight Resistance 4. The ball was on gaming community to keep the series alive but the majority doesn't speak with their wallet.
RIP Resistance
This is such a real shame. Resistance was an incredible series, and I remember the first game being incredibly impressive and a must own for PS3 consoles at the time. I also thought R3 was the best in the franchise and told an interesting narrative, with great levels. I might be mistaken on the name, but the “Chicago” level was absolutely phenomenal in tone, atmosphere, and pacing.
Such a damn shame. Resistance was a fantastic series. I think the reason 3 didn't sell as well as 1 and 2 is because they went away from the chaotic 40-60 player multiplayer matches to a more frankly boring COD clone style of only like 16 or so.
I remember playing the multiplayer beta and seeing they turned the Auger into a killstreak as well as having a martyrdom-like perk where Leapers would spawn out of a player who died. It had me thinking "They really just CODed my Resistance up!" It just didn't have the same unique feel Fall of Man and 2 did.
They also took out the unique 8 player co-op mode 2 had. It was awesome! Basically felt like a small Destiny raid before Destiny raids were a thing.
The single player was fantastic though on 3. My favorite of the series probably. Unfortunately that just wasn't enough to get people excited enough to buy it. I can see why we never got 4 but damn do I wish we could anyway. Resistance will always have a special place in my gamer heart as that was really the first series I ever got into for online multiplayer.
Odd how they've not done a Remaster for the 3 and just took away the online portion
I’ve been pining away for either a Resistance 4 or a remake / remaster of some of the original games but it seems Sony’s as brain-dead about this series as they are with just about everything else these days…….
I think 1.5 million total sales is still pretty respectable. Bayonetta games still get made, for instance. Sony should take a look at what Nintendo does with its smaller franchises. Not every single series needs to turn into a series of huge blockbuster titles.
I just want a new infamous game
With what Sony has wasted on aborted GAAS projects, we could have had a Resistance, Kill Zone and Days Gone.
Even if all three had performed poorly, Sony still wouldn't have lost as much money as they have on their GAAS projects.
They would almost certainly have made a nice profit.
Because of course they did.
Nobody wanted Resistance - they wanted Concord.
I l💚🖤e resistance games.especially on the ps3.psp was good also.word up son
That was a good decision. They made enough games and it never caught on like that. Also Halo CoD and later BF were all hot.
somehow missed this series on ps3 so not sure about 4, but would definitely take some collection remastered for ps5
It's so funny always seeing this demand and fond memories of Resistance, I was around during the PS3 Era and I can't think of A SINGLE PERSON who ever cared or talked about these games back then... The sales for the games also backs that up 😅
I think there's a bit of revisionism going on with this series haha
Insomniac Games has put out so many quality games over the years. Resistance ain't it.
Resistance or infamous or hey maybe something new for a change would certainly be better than anymore of these lame marvel games. I genuinely feel bad for insomniac at this point. They are stuck pushing out this slop indefinitely at this point. E
I loved the first game, was disappointed by the second, and didn't bother with the third. So I probably wouldn't have bothered with the fourth either. 🤷🏻♂️
I'm proud to say my name is in the credits on the first Resistance game. It was the first PS3 launch game I got to try during development and I was blown away at the time. Amazing games
@Paranoimia The third was fantastic, much better than 2.
They could have rebooted it, given it current gen graphics and made it a PS5 exclusive, it would have sold loads as it would be an exclusive FPS game, but nooo Sony only wanted live service games for this gen..
@KundaliniRising333 I agree with that, played SpiderMan a bit and it’s just dull to me. Likewise with any of the other super hero games I’ve tried bar Batman which is cool.
A remastered package of the trilogy, whether just cleaning them up a bit or porting them to Insomniac's current engine, would be amazing. I think the trilogy could really use a 2nd chance.
Throw in the current emulated version of Retribution in there, even as a pre-order bonus, and it's perfect.
They tried to make a new Resistance
Sony said: “No, no, no.”
"Resistance: Burning Skies (PS Vita) - 2%"
There are dozens of us! Do- okay, more like one dozen so far, but still! Seriously, though, one of my fondest Vita memories even despite neglecting the console's gyro functionality and the reason I'm in the market for more of the series these days to begin with.
Another call for a remastered Resistance trilogy.
I would like a new entry, but honestly I just don't think current Insomniac could pull it off. Not in terms of the writing at least, unfortunately.
Yeah I always heard a different response so to actually be open he is fair but also annoying.
3 and PSP I think are the best entries, even 3's Ratchet level up system makes it souch better.
2 is too COD 2 weapons and ok pacing to alter for a different audience, a fun game but just a market direction release I find stupid, Spiderman vs Sunset Overdrive as well SO is way more fun/creative.
While 1&3/PSP do a better job.
2's Infection to PSP was cool. It's not Outrun 2 PS2/PSP cross Dave but still cool.
Resistance has a good base of alternate history to do whatever with it.
But oh well 5 games and 3 platforms is still pretty good.
3 and Vita really took it to more everybody type person level trying to survive while 1, 2 and PSP were still military.
I'd love a new game but the state of shooters nowadays suck so much I'll stick to my PS3/360/Wii and older campaign collecting of shooters.
Boomer shooters and rail shooters are fair but modern ones are a bit eh to me these days. Or live services.
Resistance 2 30 vs 30 multiplayer was so fun
just give me a remastered trillogy
I just want to be able to play the series again without the lag of cloud streaming.
I'd take a remake/remaster of the first one, as long as they'd be no multiplayer attached.
I loved the first and third game but lets be real if it doesnt sell enough copies i can totally understand.
@Nakatomi_Uk That would have been awsome a story mode package.
I bought and played all 3. The PS3 era was interesting as the games just looked better and better as the console aged .
I would love to see the series return either via a trilogy remaster or new entry.
The PS3 generation is still my favourite because of the variety of the first party games. I miss those days.
Resistance was a great series! Sony is making some truly horrid moves this generation.
This has to be the worst PlayStation generation ever!!
@spakai I agree. I purchased all three as well.
@twitchtvpat ageeed!!!
Resistance is futile I guess
I upgraded to PS+ premium purely for the chance to play the original 3 again. Would love a new one!
