Rumours of a Devil May Cry remake have just been given a significant boost, thanks to comments made by Vergil voice actor Daniel Southworth.
Southworth was part of a Devil May Cry anniversary panel at Power Morphicon 2024, which took place in August of last year. However, as spearheaded by The Nerd Stash, the footage is only just being reported on now, over five months later.
"In fact, I just finished a video game three or four weeks ago," says Southworth. "I don't want to say any titles or anything 'cause I'm known for spilling the beans... but they asked me to do my voice the way it was back in 2004 or whatever."
He continues: "[They asked] 'Can you do the younger Vergil version?' So that was challenging."
Naturally, Southworth's comments suggest that some kind of Devil May Cry remake is happening, with him cast as a younger version of recurring antagonist Vergil.
But at this point, we need to make it clear that Southworth has done voicework in plenty of other video games not called Devil May Cry. It's entirely possible that he's actually referring to a completely separate project in which he was simply asked to perform a younger-sounding Vergil voice.
As such, it's hard to put too much stock into this particular rumour. That said, Capcom's made a habit of remaking classic games in recent years — Resident Evil being the obvious example — and Devil May Cry 5 was a bit of a blockbuster for the company, so the idea of an RE Engine remake of the first title, or prequel Devil May Cry 3, doesn't seem especially farfetched.
Nobody likes hearing it, but this is one of things where we'll just have to wait and see what happens. Capcom's release schedule is looking fairly solid at the minute, with Monster Hunter Wilds fast approaching and a brand new Onimusha pencilled in for 2026 — and you can probably bet on a new Resident Evil being announced this year as well.
What do you make of this rumour? Do you think Southworth's actually hinting at a Devil May Cry remake, or is it just wishful thinking? Stay motivated in the comments section below.

DMC3 still holds up very well so I would prefer a DMC1 remake as the combat for that one does feel a bit dated by today's standards.
That said, Virgil doesn't really have many lines in DMC1 outside of like one very small flashback sentence from when him and Dante were kids. So if this is a remake I would bet that it's more likely to be DMC3.
Honestly I'm fine with just more DMC in general though. It's the peak of action combat for me.
The first game has aged pretty badly now, it still has its charm and the music is great but yeah its aged. A remake would be great.
Mallet Island is still my fave DMC location so seeing that spruced up in RE engine would be fab! But would just as happily take a DMC 3 remake.
Capcom honestly has been fantastic with their old IPs post the Mega Man Legends 3 debacle, which angered a very niche audience. If they are remaking DMC then I'm sure it will be a top quality production, however if they were remaking it then would there even be a need for a younger Vergil voice? It'd either be a recast or just have him be himself (unless he sounds ancient now). So we'll see. Or maybe it's a prequel or something.
Make a new one instead.
But hey, it’s a Capcom remake, so I’ll be interested, even if I’m burnt out of the remake culture in games.
@ItsAlwaysSunnyyy It’s never too late for Capcom to make things right with Legends fans.
I'm okay if Capcom remake the 1st game but i prefer they remake the black sheep in the series, DMC 2.
Gameplay wise, not just it's a bad DMC game but DMC timeline got weird retcon with the way Capcom treated DMC 2 as if it doesn't exist.
Beside, Lucia has a nice design and interesting background story that connected with Sparda. With a remake, they could make Lucia gameplay and story much better.
I’m gonna take a wild guess and say maybe they’re remaking DMC1 and 2 to flow better into the next sequel. Like a sort of abridged remake that keeps the plot beats but updates combat to DMC5 standards.
The original is my favorite, I love the clunky controls and plot. Also, the commercial for it was awesome :]
If so day1 buy for me love devil may cry and trust capcom to get it right
Actually I would prefer they started freah so I would love for them to remake 1 (or start with 3) and continue from there. DMCV was excellent but Dante in the timeline has gotten too old, we need spunky baby face Dante back.
No reason for them to remake the good game, remake the game that actually needs updating and qol changes
Hookshot Media is like the patron saint of blue balling. I might not like to hear that there's every likelihood a Devil May Cry remake isn't happening, but you're the one who brought it up. Was just living my life before that 🙄🤣
I'm going to predict that this is to do with the next Smash game. Switch 2 is approaching so that means the Smash fighter speculation cycle begins anew.
I love the 1st game it's one of my favourite gsnes ever but these remakes are getting too much now it needs stop
I need this to be true. Id kill for a devil may cry AND devil may cry 3 remake
I wouldn't mind a remake treatment of the whole original trilogy, even though I find DMC3 to still hold up pretty well but the first two titles could really benefit from the treatment.
Rather have a continuation of the story in DMC 6
I wouldn't mind a DMC1 Remake, more so than 3 cause 3 still plays well even today.
@mountain_spider I think I bought four remakes last year, and honestly, outside Rebirth, none of the other ones really impacted me. Rebirth was my GotY, so my anti-remake rhetoric maybe contradicts a bit, but I’ll say that Rebirth dramatically changed FF7, so that, as familiar as it was, it was also surprising and new.
In fact, with DQ3 and SH2 in particular, I had this “I’ve already played this game enough last time I bought it. Why did I buy it again?” type of feeling. I don’t really replay games often (outside shorter gameplay centric games, ala Super Mario World and Megaman and such), so the feeling of novelty wasn’t quite there and I got maybe halfway into both before jumping to something that felt new to me. I’ll say that Capcom’s take on Resident Evil has been solid, though RE4 didn’t hit me like RE2 and 3 did, even if it’s a better game than the other two. I think the tight gameplay and short run time may contribute to that feeling though. For a while, I was grabbing all the Nintendo ports and remakes on Switch, but I’m sort of done with that. I get that it’s safe money, but I also feel like, long term, people will start to lose interest if gaming continues going heavier on remakes.
@PuppetMaster DMC 2 has a lot of potential imo and to see it get a remake like Resident Evil to fix it would be awesome! Also the outfit in DMC 2 is still my favorite out of any other Dante outfit.
If he is doing a game like he did the voice in 2004....well it wouldn't be DMC 1 as that game released in 2001 and Vergil wasn't voiced by Daniel Southworth (his first appearance was DMC3). It would have to be DMC3. Though, it's possible all 3 of the original DMCs are getting remade as 1 package.
Devil may cry 1 & 2 would be fantastic as remakes, implementing the combat mechanics that feature from 3 and onwards would be very much appreciated!! Oh man, I hope this comes to fruition, I have played Devil May Cry 1 literally hundreds of times all the way through, just an awesome, awesome game!!
Sequels, remasters, and remakes, oh my! Creatively bankrupt. Nows a good of time as any to tackle the backlog.
@Nepp67 Yeah DMC 2 has good potentials. I like the lore about human group / clan that used to worked together with Sparda. But they never expand that lore into the main story. And yeah i also like DMC 2 outfits. They would looks nice in RE engine.
@VeganHerpes People didn't buy Capcom new IP's Kunitsu Gami while their sequels, remaster, and remake are selling well. Capcom just follows the users demands.
I'd rather 6 thanks.
Anyways, the idea of a DMC remake is interesting to me because while I love DMC1 it is also a game I am absolutely not precious about.
If they go this route then I say go nuts with it. There are no sacred cows here beyond the general tone and vibes.
maybe he was referring to the new DMC animated series for netflix???
definitely don't need a remake. focus on dino crisis and breath of fire series please.
As another commenter mentioned it could be for a new smash bros, but much more likely a dmc remake. But regardless how do you not put "too much stock" into this rumour the voice actor literally named the character voice he did. It could only be for a VERY short list of projects.
@Korgon DMC3 should have been called DMC0 that game was a masterclass in how to make a actiongame. The Gameplay was tight, the movies were epic the soundtrack was a piece of art the whole game was perfect for me. And Dante was so cool i think i like it better then DMC5. 😁
@Flaming_Kaiser
Agreed. I love DMC3. It's easily one of my favorites of all time and my favorite PS2 game. The amount of hours I've put into it at this point across all the versions I've played has to number in the thousands!😄
@Korgon
Agreed with this. DMC1 could definitely use a remake to make it more in line gameplay-wise with 3-5. I’m sure some might argue DMC1 stands alone in its more “gothic” feel with the areas and music, etc. (we forget DMC1 was a partially scrapped idea for Resident Evil 4!), so I could understand some people being hesitant to mess with that.
I do think it could get a remake for sure though. But yeah, not sure how you really incorporate Vergil in that without changing the story a bit. Otherwise a prequel to DMC3 would make sense.
Good evening guys, I would prefer a remake of DMC1 and definitely DMC 2 .....but I believe that a dmc 6 should be released with all the enemies from all DMCs ...and I believe it would be the perfect ending to this game ...so it would draw a lot of interest to the game....and I say the ending because I believe that the cycle of the game is closed!! Give a perfect ending that will remain in the story!!
@Korgon That opening song can you feel the suffering dont know the title of it. Running down the tower while he throws his word down shooting the hilt. And how made fun of Cerberus. 😆
