A rumour linked to allegedly accurate leaker Lunatic Ignus has started spreading. It follows a report from Bloomberg's Jason Schreier that developer Rocksteady is looking to return to the world of single-player Batman. Word on these lawless, unverified streets suggests that this next effort would be based on the incredibly awesome, decidedly darker Batman Beyond, adapting its narrative but not the animated series' distinctive art style.
We'd be on board with that proposition. However, curiously, the rumour suggests that the gritty IP could be a PS5 exclusive, which sounds downright suicidal. Following the fallout from multi-million dollar flop Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, we'd have thought publisher Warner Bros Games would want to get anything from the studio in front of as many eyeballs as possible. More grandiose still, it's claimed that this Batman Beyond title would form the foundation for a new trilogy of Batman games.
It's believed that Rocksteady was roped in to work on Hogwarts Legacy after work ceased on Suicide Squad. Outside of repeated rounds of layoffs, we haven't had word of the developer's activities in recent months.
Truly conspiratorial Gothamites will recall speculation that WB Montreal, another subsidiary of Warner Bros Games, was rumoured to be working on something similar, potentially a Batman Beyond game that was ultimately cancelled, with the team moving on to develop Gotham Knights. Could those idle assets be repurposed, rising out of Slaughter Swamp like a vengeful Solomon Grundy? We want badly to believe, but the exclusive part, in particular, would require a healthy heaping of salt to stomach.
What do you think? Would you be up for a Rocksteady-developed Batman Beyond game? Or does the prospect simply sound too good to be true? Take wing to Neo Gotham City in the comments section below.

Wow wow wow. If this are true and quality is on par with arkham city and arkham knight, then i am so happy for it. But i doubt it for now until we seen a trailer of gameplay.
Back to old yourselves Rocksteady? After suicide squad huge failure lol
They want failure. They looking for failure. We want the old and good true batman arkham world. Not suicide squad or gotham knights. Jesus!
Now this excites me. A few days ago I was wondering how rocksteady could make more Batman games and a Batman beyond game is just perfect.
I don't see Rocksteady or many other WB studios recovering from the damage they've done to their IP. I never want to play a Monolith, NRS, or Rocksteady game again. WB straight up killed MK for me.
I see the Hogwarts Legacy GOTY and release of HL2 as a portent of WB to come. I'm cynical, so I think there's going to be some really bad monetization or really bad grooming for monetization in the GOTY release. Like if they don't just straight up put in new micro-transactions, they will do something sleazy like charge to bring your character over from the first game. Hell, they will probably put in a bunch of stuff to endear you to your HL1 character in the GOTY edition and THEN charge to bring the character over.
I have no faith in Rocksteady anymore but maybe they'll be hungry for a win. This is their chance to redeem themselves.
Batman Beyond is amazing and it's about time someone finally adapted it into a game. I think the tone of the Arkham games is already surprisingly close to Batman Beyond, so they'd be able to pull off the feel perfectly.
However, I don't see why it'd be exclusive at all. Makes the rumour way less likely and a case of too good to be true.
Batman Beyond was ingrained into my childhood, you just couldn't beat Cartoon Network in the early 2000's
All their best people have left, this isn’t the team that did the Arkham games. I’d keep expectations extremely low even if it turns out true.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was an exclusive to either Xbox or PS5 for a bit. WB games is losing money. I wouldn't be surprised if they were desperate enough to take timed exclusivity money.
From what I've read it's still many years away so if anything, it'll be a PS6 exclusive.
@Herculean The only reason I could see for it to be exclusive, would be WB might well have been on the verge of closing Rocksteady. Given which, the extra initial funding to make the game exclusive, or likely just a timed exclusive, might have gone some way to help them actually take the risk?
That said, I still don't think it's true.
will they call it Batman Arkham Beyond?
@SirSephy Batman: Beyond Arkham
I doubt this is true but as a console exclusive that would only mean leaving Xbox out of the picture and that quite frankly isn't a huge market any more.
Gee, Rocksteady. Imagine if you had done this when Kevin Conroy was still alive as opposed to completely tanking your brand with garbage?
Sigh. As the saying goes, there are two types of people: Those who know that fire is hot, and those who have to stick their hand in it first.
It’s only a rumour so I wouldn’t get my hopes up.
I love Batman Beyond but haven’t heard good things about their latest games
Lol nah, not with publisher like WB and IP as popular as Batman.
@Vladspartan not true. The beautiful thing about DC is they've never been afraid to experiment with their characters in any medium. Gotham Knights had flaws but it was a fun game, Suicide Squad was ... well, it could have been good from a story perspective if they changed every other system.
But Batman Beyond would be good - and it could take place in the Arkhamverse just like it took place in BTAS. With Kevin Conroy gone it's a good opportunity to recast the Arkham character to be older. And get Will Friedle back.
I only watched the show last year and while it was decent (the movie was the highlight), it couldn’t overall match TAS.
Above said, a well-playing action game in future Gotham could be neat. Maybe we’ll find out in 2027-2028…or 2039 to really stay faithful to Neo-Gotham!
Having this as a PlayStation exclusive (timed or otherwise) is a terrible idea.
I heard a while ago somewhere that Playstation had approached WB about a batman game. I can see why they'd do an exclusivity deal as Playstation would cover marketing costs and provide support and Rocksteady could do with a profitable game for their next release.
Going to feel different not having Kevin Cooroy being Bruce Wayne...albeit as a fan of the Animated series,Justice League etc.,found Batman'Beyond's promise of classic characters "broken", bitter or dead not that enjoyable...but what do I know, current day Hollywood, Disney etc have fully embraced such story telling!!🙄😂
Moreso though,it still remains to be seen what currently represents Rocksteady today can match the older Rocksteady teams of times past that made the Arkham series.
If true they would need to try so hard to ***** it up
Probably a PS6 game, so will see in 2029.
We will see.but i know rocksteady is definitely working on a single player game.word up son
Lunatic Ignus and "reliable?"
Please lol...
@Vladspartan Gotham Knights was neither an Arkham game or Rocksteady. It was its own thing in its own universe made by Warner Bros Interactive Montreal.
@Lysterao I don't doubt Rocksteady might accept the money. I just doubt Sony would offer it at all.
Having it be only on ps5 would be very stupid. With how expensive a game like that would be too make. Bare minimum it also needs to be on pc, bare minimum.
@Godot25 Yea, they're a pretty bad leaker, aren't they. Crimson Desert in Q1 (nope), State of Play on September 19 with a big announcement (nope), Lost Souls Aside in July (nope). He's also lying on Reddits pretending to be someone else who is corroborating his own story.
@Khayl Don't post his *****. He's a liar, you're spreading fake news by calling him "allegedly accurate".
In before people mad at woke Asian Batman.
@Herculean Not to mention fact that first person who mentioned that Sony is sniffing around potential Batman game from Rocksteady was Shpeshal_Nick
@Steel76 "The original founders of Rocksteady, and the developers of the Arkham trilogy, isn't there anymore."
You mean the same guys that made Suicide Squad from scratch and left when it was mostly complete so they could save face? That was their baby regardless if they jumped from the ship as soon as they saw the iceberg.
@Vladspartan Erm… this isn’t suicide squad or Gotham knights (which they had nothing to do with btw)
Sounds amazing I grew up watching Batman Beyond and that theme is ingrained in me, this could be special. It needs to be multiple though unless Sony is forking up money.
Oh my effing gawd, if this is true, I am SO down! I’ve been asking for this since Arkham City. I especially loved zipping around Knight wearing the Beyond outfit.
Edit: I think the exclusivity is pretty dumb, but it's possible that Sony shelled out enough money for the privilege, while also providing the capital to keep Rocksteady afloat. It might be that Sony was simply the Angel Investor and exclusivity was part of the bargain.
I quite enjoyed Gotham Knights. I did play it on Game Pass though.
I like Batman the Animated Series, and haven't seen Batman Beyond but I'm onboard if it's anything like the Arkham series. It's far too early for me to form any kind of technical opinion, but I'm definitely remaining cautiously optimistic. Maybe I'll eventually get around to watching Batman Beyond, I skipped Gotham Knights even when it was free. None of the characters seemed to resonate, nor did the reviews.
When Suicide Squad was given away on PS+, I tried it for a couple hours. The only reason why I didn't turn it off after the first encounter was because I was enjoying the story and cutscenes a lot. After a few more encounters, I was done though. Give me that Arkham gameplay back and I'm sure Rocksteady will crush it again. But good Lord, don't be an exclusive to any system!
I mean a little pointless making it an exclusive considering no one buys games on Xbox if it's not in game pass. But then I guess given development timelines Sony are probably trying to line this up as a PS6 launch window exclusive.
Probably misunderstood. They probably meant at this stage is there any console high end as a PS5? No. So of course it's only on PS5 hence why exclusive.
If this game is exclusive it’s going to massively hurt its success, especially as it’s not sounding like a low budget production.
Square have admitted making final fantasy 7 remake a ps5 console exclusive wasn’t great in terms of sales and return on investment. They’re now actively pursuing multi-platform release strategies.
Console manufacturers don’t pay enough for exclusivity to offset the sales losses for games with huge production costs. Rise of the tomb raider was another example on Xbox of the exclusivity hurting the sales success - the next and final entry of the series, shadow of the tomb raider, was a multi-platform release.
Multi-platform isn’t just Xbox, it’s also pc and potentially switch.
Making batman exclusive to any platform is a real shi**y anti consumer move
After the amount of talent jumped ship during and after suicide squad, I doubt they will ever reach the pedigree they once had. Nor do I want them to be forever stuck with a single ip like many of playstation first party studios have been coaxed into. Ps5 exclusive? Why? Exclusivity needs to stop, as it's just an excuse to double dip with a garbage pc port at this point.
AA, isn't dead, however greed has largely killed creativity in this space.
Rocksteady: We've started work on the game you expected us to release in 2018 !
Temper your expectations, everyone. Rocksteady now is not the Rocksteady that released the Arkham trilogy. So many people left during the debacle that was Suicide Squad's nearly 9 year development. Not to mention, this game won't be out until at least 2029 or maybe 2030.
I wish them the best, but after Suicide Squad, I'm not buying it. To me they are no different than Fntastic games (who scammed people with the Day Before). Rocksteady just had a better coat of paint on their scam of a game.
I'd be more excited if BB uses the look of the cartoon.
i called it. it was gonna be an alternate batman
Eh, why ps5 exclusive, don't the like money?
I can get behind batman beyond. Maybe if they choose for a stylised low detail cartoon look over the high fidelity graphics of the Arkham games they can focus on gameplay and perhaps still ship a game within this console generation.
Of course I'd prefer a beautiful world like in Arkham knights. Game still looks better than many current releases. But that would probably be in 2030.
@tameshiyaku arkham knight took what, 3 and a half years? either way i’m with you on that. i’m honestly perfectly content with ps4 graphics and even late ps3 graphics. i’m really over games trying to shove as many pixels on the screen as possible wasting gigs and resources that can go into something else that adds to the game
It's based on Batman Beyond? Man I am hyped now.
let’s wait for confirmation but i don’t buy this, especially the ps5 exclusivity deal, if so, would playstation would be advertising this up?
I'm hoping they follow the art direction of the Batman Beyond animated movie pitch. That would look insane.
All I can say is finally finally! Bruce Wayne's batman has been done and told a million times in a million different ways. It's been told so much that this day in time all his tech is out dated. I've said over and over again if DC would do a batman beyond with Terry's suit would complete with iron man.
