Leakers trade in credibility and are usually only as good as their last prediction. Considering veteran leakster Nate the Hate, in a spectacularly public fashion and coming right down to the wire, correctly predicted the exact date of the Nintendo's Switch 2 reveal in January, we're inclined to listen. Doubling down on last month's proclamation that a State of Play was on the way in February, the Hateful Nate (a new nickname we're workshopping) says you should probably cancel any Valentine's Day plans you might have; Sony's next State of Play will air sometime during Valentine's week.
This clarification comes from a comment left by Nate (thanks, VGC) in response to a question about whether the supposed State of Play would occur in early, mid, or late February. With a flair for the dramatic this scribe certainly appreciates, the industry insider replied: "What does your heart tell you?"
Confirming on our trusty calendar, next Monday is the 10th, and Friday the 14th is St. Valentine's Day. Trying to determine the day of the week Sony prefers for events like this is generally something of a mug's game: September's State of Play took place on a Tuesday, and May's dismal showing was on a Friday. December's PlayStation Showcase aired on a Thursday; we suppose we'll have to make ourselves available all week.
What do you think, do you reckon we get a State of Play in time for Valentine's Day? What are you hoping to see from the typically smaller show? Let us know in the comments section below.

I’m ready to preorder Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yotei whenever you want my money, Sony.
Shoot, I’m ready to preorder Physint and Intergalactic.
...Ya know, sometimes I miss having 80% of news centralized at e3. The slow December-Aprils of yesteryears were an appreciated opportunity to focus on other things and play older releases.
But now we're always on and gaming never sleeps. It's either a Direct, rumors about a Direct, some Keighleyan affair, random tweet announcement, random Youtube announcement, etc, etc, etc. Xbox just did Ninja Gaiden hour, Capcom has some s*** in a week or something, Maybe Sony is maybe planning something for February, maybe. Nintendo might have one last Switch focused Direct — probably this month...maybe — before their Switch 2 focused Direct in April. It's too much all the time.
tl;dr: Old gamer misses monthly magazines being most frequent source of gaming news. And just magazines in general... And the 90s...
@RoomWithaMoose Couldn’t agree more. Give me an annual/twice a year big old event where everyone knows the big hitters are going to come out of the woods rather than the ‘potential’ for an event where, when it happens, we get a tease of a tease or a 20 minute deep dive into a single game.
I think Sony have done a very good job of training it's fan-base to not really care... either because these events don't happen, or are just under-whelming. It does seem however that Sony needs something to actually give some positive news to its gamers.
Yeah... zero expectations even if it is...
@RoomWithaMoose same opinion here.
And old as well.
And I miss the 70’s and 80’s. Things were simple back then.
Have very little expectations for any Sony Show for the next few years now that we have the full picture in regards to the whole Sony GaaS-pivot and how that worked out.
I’ve heard rumors that we’re getting ape escape 4, I sure hope it’s true I’d go bananas for ape escape 4!
RE9 news please my heart can't take this waiting anymore.
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare to be honest, it's mostly this site and community that act so negative towards every bit of news. The regular negative articles written here do not help either to stop the negative vibe. Not that we shouldn't be critical ar all at some points, but does it need to be all the time. Just look in the archive of news, mostly is all doom and gloom.
I do agree that Sony should just show more of it's first party, even if the games are a year away.
@1UP-HUSKY what worries me is that at the same time as XBox is moving entirely towards being a 3rd party publisher - PlayStation is moving inexorably towards becoming just a store-front. Most people here got into gaming (whichever brand of it) because the games connected, and there felt something unique.
Unfortunately - we're moving towards a very commercial world, where that sense of expectation and excitement is frowned upon as being 'not how business is done'. Even at a mature age - I think the world becomes a little less interesting when platform holders can't actually inspire.
And yes - I get the whole anti-exclusives thing... but I think some of the most iconic games have come from those ecosystems. I hope Sony can inspire expectation still.
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare exclusives are needed for a console, it's why people buy a console and what pushes a platform.
I grew up in the 90's and started with the NES all the way to the current consoles. What each new console had up to the PS3 was that each console had much better graphics, and could do a lot more. The jump from 2D to 3D was amazing. Each console brought something new. Xbox delivered online, and PS3 took storytelling to a new level in games.
With current consoles there's not much difference, Wich makes it harder to be excited for a new console or game. Wich makes it harder for developers as well to bring that newer unique game, especially for those who grew up with each console generation.
@1UP-HUSKY I get the impression the most negative voices are never going to be happy no whatever what is revealed. Some people just like to moan.
Personally I can't keep up with all the games released, there literally isn't enough time to play all the great games that come out across platforms. My backlog just grows. Like @RoomWithaMoose I miss simpler times, though still enjoy my copy of EDGE every month.
Shadow drop Ghost of Yotei! 😂
Already? But there was one just last week. No wait, that was the 3rd party developer direct I got mixed up with.
@Nexozi Yeah, the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, that launched the same week in 2020 that Fable and State of Decay 3 were announced. That would be hilarious if the sequel launched before those games even got a concrete release date or release year (its hilarious yet has every chance of happening).
Never mind the bollocks, just give me a new Motorstorm!
Can't wait to watch this while sipping red wine and snuggling my PS5 Pro 💖
