Rockstar Games currently has GTA 6 slated to launch in the Fall 2025 window, but last night's State of Play event could have inadvertently reduced that timeframe by a little. From the same company putting out GTA 6, it was confirmed that Borderlands 4 will release for PS5 on 23rd September 2025.
In comments made by Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick last November, it was insinuated that the two titles won't release very close together. "I think it’s safe to say that we wouldn’t, and no one would, stack up huge releases unnecessarily," he said. More recently, Zelnick reiterated its intentions to release GTA 6 in the Fall 2025 window, which stretches from September to December. The firm is said to feel "really good" about its current estimate.
Now we have a release date for Borderlands 4, coupled with the comments from Zelnick, it appears the general release window for GTA 6 has shrunk. Based on his comments about not wanting to "stack up huge releases unnecessarily", the two games won't be released close together. You'd think Take-Two would want a buffer of at least a few weeks between the two releases, which means GTA 6 could launch for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S at the very start of September, or in mid-October and beyond.
Of course, this could just as easily suggest a delay to 2026. Either way, it seems like a GTA 6 launch during September is highly unlikely to happen — unless it's during the first week. However, even then, releasing Borderlands 4 just after GTA 6 will likely significantly harm the former's sales potential.

In what world are we living where something like a Borderlands game is considered a huge release or any game to take notice of.
It would be a miracle if this game releases in september… I mean, we haven’t seen a second trailer yet
They won't release it in early Sept if Mafia is coming out in summer. Think I read August somewhere.
Mosty likely GTA releases in November, assuming it's not delayed.
A presumed November release probably gives one reason why we don't have release dates for Yotei or DS2 yet.
@Frmknst As much as you might dislike it, Borderlands 3 sold 18+ million copies. It is absolutely a big series.
@ 2027
I'm prolly the only one but I'm not super hyped for GTA6 and I've not been into GTA since maybe San Andreas.
@Frmknst more like what world are you living in lol…. game definitely does sell well… and probably still will… though I do have a feeling this one might not sell as well as the first three… or I guess 4 technically
Still skeptical it’ll be a 2025 launch, like others have said, we haven’t even had a second trailer and the £millions Rockstar will blow on the marketing campaign
Borderlands wasn't that huge before but its outstanding movie adaption has brought it to a wider audience with its stellar cast and ingenious directing
@Frmknst What rock do you live under? The series sells in the tens of millions. It has 3 mainline entries (with this 4th looming), a prequel, 2 spin offs, and it earned a Hollywood adaptation.
You can argue the quality of all of the above. But to deny the IP is strong and tends to sell better than most titles is willful ignorance.
I’m guessing early November, or a delay.
I'm going with October because most of their games get released then except from GTA 4 & 5 which came out in the month of april and September.
Probably when rockstar announce the release date, it will be that.
Man, I wish we could pinpoint Judas’s release date a little bit.
I never thought Borderlands would be helpful in any way, but it’s a good thing that release date got winnowed down. Sort of surprised Mafia hasn’t gotten a release date, given that Borderlands did.
@Frmknst The same world where the series has sold over 77 million copies, with Borderlands 2 selling 27 million alone?
Rockstar wouldn’t need to spend a dime on marketing and gta6 would still be the biggest selling game of all time
I reckon November then…
Probably the last month of fall, just to keep all the hardcore people on pins and needles xD
Ouch first comment here got zapped🤣🤣 it is funny saying borderlands isn't a game to take notice of,.even it's worst entry sold over 15million, which is still more than some"amazing first party" games
Anyway it's a November release I'd say just in time for the holidays
@Frmknst In the world where it sells tons and tons of copies.
This means GTA 6 either comes out in November or in 2026. My bet is 2026 sadly.
November, that is the most likely IMO
Fact is that although the Borderlands film was abysmal, it garnered a lot of attention to the franchise. So what was a pretty popular franchise has likely doubled in popularity just cause of the film being tentpoled.
it's going to be November... if it actually launches this year at all.
Within a month (23 days) is not close? That is 101 killing of your own releases are they EA or something?
it’s gonna be october
@0niguy yup, you’re the only one
In my mind I'm feeling August or October/November. It doesn't really matter when it comes out because when it does, every other game will fall off from existence. So, yeah slightly worried for Fairgame$, Ghost of Yotei and whatever Firesprite is cooking
@Frmknst Take-Two owns both Borderlands 4 and GTA 6. It has nothing to do with how big a game B4 is or not. It's not good for the company's profit margin.
@PeaceSalad your avatar made me read the comment in his voice. And it was a perfect match.
Depends on when COD is going to release this year. If COD returns to a Nov release, then Oct release, if COD follows the recent earlier release in Oct, then Nov release. Like he said, you don't want to stack huge releases unnecessarily, I'm pretty sure he was talking about COD.
@UK_ might be delayed but I doubt it, they've been developing it for basically a decade and they seem pretty committed to that date that being said,. Rockstar games usually launch in an amazingly high quality state, but all of the originators of the series are long gone and the publisher has very obviously taken over decision making, so while it may make the 2025 release date I wouldn't be surprised if there were significant bugs.
And the lack of another trailer means nothing and it's good they've not started marketing it properly yet. It should be a few months' long of a campaign but extremely penetrative and bombastic, that way it'll get people hyped but not be long enough for the hype to die down. Or, oddly, allow the hype to get too out of control
It'll be more like: GTA(202)6
@yazzika That’s fantastic 👍 Hope you’re having a wonderful day friend.
November. It'll sell 50 million for Xmas lol
Dec 25, with console special edition tie-ins for Xmas
If it isn't delayed till 2026, I'd say late October to early November is a safe bet. Take Two 100 billion percent wants to take advantage of the holiday season after all.
