There's been much debate over how well Assassin's Creed Shadows would be received in Japan. After all, the game's set in the country's feudal 16th century, and its open world map attempts to recreate a vast swath of the island nation.
In the months prior to release, there were reports that various Japanese institutions were displeased with Shadows' depiction of certain things. You may remember now infamous 'flag' saga, for example, in which Ubisoft had used a historical reenactment group's banner design without permission.
The company promptly apologised, but it was these kinds of missteps that would paint a negative perception up until Shadows' launch last week. Indeed, many western onlookers had taken these snapshot moments to mean that Japan really wasn't keen on the open world RPG.
But in truth, the game's been met with rather positive reviews from Japanese publications like 4Gamer, Dengeki, Gamer, and Game Watch. As reported by Polygon's Kazuma Hashimoto, critics have been praising the title's setting, with more specific praise being pointed towards the season and weather systems — elements that western reviewers were quick to highlight as well.
Despite some minor grievances with regards to inaccurate environmental details, everyone seems fairly impressed. What's more, the reviewers really enjoyed Naoe as a character — a shinobi on a quest for revenge. They apparently mention her qualities as a young protagonist who gets to mature over the course of the adventure; a trope that Japan's always been big on in manga and anime.
Yasuke, however, hasn't quite struck the same chords with critics. It should be noted that none of the reviews have any problem with Yasuke — a samurai of African origin — actually being in the game, but a couple of them do point out that, as a character, he's less relatable than Naoe due to a general lack of obvious flaws. For the record, we're not sure we agree — but it's opinions, innit.
That said, Game Watch did seem to like how players get to see Japan — and key figures in its history — through the eyes of an outsider. And overall, both Naoe and Yasuke have been praised as dual protagonists, both in terms of their interactions with one another and their writing. Not bad.
So, in summary, Japanese reviewers haven't quite put Assassin's Creed Shadows on the same pedestal as Ghost of Tsushima — Sony's gorgeous open worlder really did seem to hit home over there — but it's still managed to garner a lot of praise.
Meanwhile, in a related story, veteran Japanese developer Hideki Kamiya (of Bayonetta fame) has shared his own thoughts on Shadows — and the people who have been lashing out against it.
"This isn’t limited to this case, but while there are a few super-intense people who make a big fuss saying, ‘I won’t tolerate that!’, the other majority of normal people who take an ‘it’s fine’ stance are basically silent," Kamiya posted on social media.
"I felt bad that it was being criticized so much, but [I’m] glad that it seems to be doing well in both sales and reviews."
Speaking of which, it'll be interesting to see how well Shadows has done in the upcoming Japanese sales charts, which should be published this week.
How did you think Shadows would do in Japan? Was it always going to compare to Ghost of Tsushima? As always, be sure to give our Assassin's Creed Shadows guide a peek if you need help with the game, and then soak up that picturesque Japanese countryside in the comments section below.

This is good news for Ubisoft. Now let's hope this all does translate into good sales figures.
Glad too see people enjoying it and saying good things about it. Kinda assumed it would be review bombed b/c "reasons".
I don't like Kamiya's games, but I do respect the guy.
Honestly, I'm enjoying it a lot more than Ghost of Tsushima. Stealth is better, combat is better, the visuals are better and it just has more stuff to do. More variety.
I think Tsushima does a better job of feeling like a movie, at least in cutscenes.
I'm loving both Yasuke and Naoe so far. I find Yasuke way more interesting than a normal japanese samurai (ymmv).
It's just more fun, at least for me, so I'm glad it's doing good.
I have 40 hours so far, and I'm excited for more.
I expect usual suspects will be along shortly to explain why this is wrong and why AC Shadows is still bad. Sad people that they are.
We all knew the reports of Japanese outrage were way overblown. I'm sure there are inaccuracies (the same as literally every other AC game), but nothing egregious. Japanese gamers just want a fun game to play. The same as the rest of us.
I’m surprised the article didn’t mention the debate that was had in parliament about the game. Their main concern was being able to attack and damage temples (this was patched out quickly)
Overall the the tone of the reviews is very similar to the online reviews I’ve watched. People feel Yasuke is a bad character not because he’s black but because he’s op and breaks the format of the game.
@Lup I am more interested in Yasuke from a story perspective. I want to know his connection with the hidden blade which he clearly recognised but so far for me hasn't explained from where or his connection.
Naoe is more interesting for me for game play particularly as I enjoy exploring which she excels at
Only 30 hours or so in personally but it's been a fun time.
Naoe has definitely shot up as one of my favorite AC protagonists. What can I say I'm always a sucker for a good revenge tale.
I also really like Yasuke quite a bit more than I expected going in. I figured I wouldn't play as him much since I gravitate towards stealth more myself but I find switching to him to be a great palate cleanser. He is OP as heck but in a fun way! I also just like the way they did his character in the game.
Good to see folks over in Japan are liking the game as well.
@rjejr some of the metacritic user reviews are painful to read. But that’s to be expected.
Wow, the japanese people aren't offended with this game. What a surprise....
@Kiefer-Sutherland Google, too.
" 🚨 A Disastrous Misstep – Avoid This Game at All Costs 🚨 "
Followed by a bunch of nonsense copy/pasted in multiple people's "reviews"
It's like they don't even realise how dumb it is. Like any sane person that is undecided would read 4 reviews copy pasted next to each other and think, "oh yes, I shall take their word on the matter because, most of all, I value the opinions of those that don't have their own f***ing brains" 🙃
A good game doesn’t not need defending
@freddquadros did you ask all the Japanese people?
What a surprise. I'm glad it's doing well in Japan too as the game does look very good. I'm just waiting rather impatiently for khazan to drop on my door matt and as soon as I've sated my thirst for the latest souls like ill be joining everybody in feudal japan.
No professional outlet that praises itself as being professional will bash the game for one minor nitpick, they will analyse it properly and weight the pros and cons.
I don't see why this needs to be news, you don't need to defend a good game but people seem rather eager to defend Shadows.
@KillerBoy Did you mean for that to be a double negative? If not: many good games have been defended throughout the history of gaming. Plenty of people don't like legendary titles like Tetris, Doom, Ocarina of Time, God of War ('18),etc.
So, like... What are you even saying...?

The game is good. Its just not remarkable. Ac games used to be incredible. Something got lost along the way man
Hideki Kamiya's response to people hating on what he said was brutal as hell 😂😂😂
Honestly, I don’t get the hate here. Sure, it’s not some groundbreaking masterpiece, but it’s fun, it grabs your attention - and that’s what counts. The fact that the main character is black even gives it a bit of extra flavor, kinda like The Last Samurai vibe. I’d be the first to trash the game if it felt like it was pushing some political agenda (like Life is Strange: Double Exposure). But here it's not the case or at least it’s not shoved down your throat in some cringey way. So yeah, I’m glad it’s doing well. Hopefully they take the hint and keep up this level of quality.
@Boxmonkey The "debate" was they were worried morons would destroy real life shrines. By that logic GTA causes people to commit mass murder. Its funny how politicians thinking games causing real life actions is now suddenly legit with the AC Shadows haters.
@KillerBoy Being good or great game isn't enough for chuds anymore. Even Kingdom Come 2 and MH Wilds wasn't safe from them.
@KillerBoy Did you?
Really? It's way different from the let's play I've seen, especially the story and voice, lol.
I like both Ghost and Shadows. They both are fun and I like the settings.
It was never Japan that was mad over Yasuke. It was certain folks outraged on Japan’s behalf.
@Boxmonkey it’s amazing to me that the overall mood you’ve seen about Yasuke is based on how he is as a character and not him being a Black guy in Feudal Japan. I’ve seen it both ways. But damn if it hasn’t been mostly about his race.
Look, I’ll never understand why people choose to pretend it’s one thing and not the other. You don’t have to be “woke” (I’m not) to see or say what it’s really about. Don’t pretend like it really is what you just said it is because you know 🤬 well it’s not!
@Cry_Zero Assassin’s Creed has never been incredible! It’s a 7-8/10 series for sure. My opinion, of course.
Agreed with Kamiya that the response for Yasuke or this game was overblown. I mean, you have the right to dislike Yasuke or the game. But hating for 24/7 is just mental.
@AhmadSumadi They forget how underwhelming AC1 was, how they b*tched at yearly releases, how they hated AC3, how they moaned Black Flag wasn't AC, how they hated how broken Unity was, how they moaned that Syndicate was more of the same and so on.
@KillerBoy should be the case, but in this day and age the weirdest people are out and about slandering the work of others for the silliest of reasons.
An another note however... someone who actually should be pulled through the dirt in every way possible. A certain individual who owns a social media platform and runs a bogus government division with no mandate, just started a silly debate with the PR division of Ubisoft, and that certain someone seems to be on the loosing end of the discussion 😂
We live in the dumbest timeline.
"Indeed, many western onlookers had taken these snapshot moments to mean that Japan really wasn't keen on the open world RPG."
Something the weebs who spent so much time here "defending Japan" should take to heart. The silver lining however, all their arguments were comedic gold. Sure had a good laugh.

"but it's opinions, Innit"...
Open world and seasonal changes look great to me, it's not every gamers cup of tea so to speak oh and speaking of a brew I watched worth-a-buy impressions YouTube gameplay video and some of the play through looked a tad bland if I'm honest, was vid was somewhat funny, he said there is a mission where you go pat a dog? Another where you host a tea party lol, and another where you go through some weird ritual praying thing? can anyone confirm these missions are side quests or can you skip these types of missions, it's not something I want to pay for. Worth-a-buy used Ubisoft subscription model and so didn't pay full price and he uninstalled after 7-8 hour play time
@torquex the dog quest is just to show you how get new animals for your hideout basically takes about 2 minutes,
The Tea party you don't host, you attend to get close to an assassination target.
The praying ritual...not sure which you mean because there is both, statues on the road etc which give buffs and then temple shrines which you pray at to give mastery points
@DennisReynolds yeah.I can’t think of a single AC game that wasn’t massively complained about. It’s only after the fact when they say it was a great game and the newest game is the one that’s complete trash… seems to be that way for any game franchise tbh
@Uromastryx I appreciate your input many thanks, the ritual part you have to press different buttons, some of these gameplay activities don't appeal to me if I'm honest but if they are short or skippable it might be ok? I'll check out a few more gameplay videos and see if the price drops a bit, it's quite expensive.
@Ethanguin People love to say how AC was peak with Ezio yet forget how disliked his last entry was. They highlight how good AC3 was but forget they hated it originally and only changed their tune when they played the remaster. They also forget AC changes its style every few games, AC2, Black Flag, Unity and Odyssey all play very different to each other for instance. The idea of "classic" AC is fake because even AC1 plays very different to AC2.
The social media accounts are even getting love. This is becoming the greatest turnaround since the internet went from "Keanu is so woooden" to "Keanu is the nicest guy on earth"
Well I think of it this way: you know when an American movie depicts England in a film and it's all really off and kind of funny? Even just normal modern England? And it becomes its own genre of "the American version of England in movies"? Well this probably comes across something like that to Japanese people. The AC series has always had this thing with whatever it's portraying feeling like a pop culture version of that time and place, like Odyssey felt like Ancient Greece via Jason and the Argonauts.
I notice they've done various things to appeal to the Japanese more, like an in-game warning about climbing on torii gates, which would be seen as incredibly f'd up in Japan. And afaik they removed all mentions of Yasuke actually being a samurai from various official Japanese materials because a samurai isn't simply a swordfighter but was an actual social class you'd tend to be born into, iirc.
His inclusion does feel odd since, at least so far, he was there at the start and then I just becomes Naoe's game for ages with him never seen again since the start - though I am spending a lot of time exploring.
@AhmadSumadi That pretty much describes all Ubisoft games
@DennisReynolds In response to your comment #21. I could be wrong but I think they are burned by the likes of johnny somali amd other nuisance streamers. Look at what happened at watazumi shrine (there was an article earlier). I think their worry is not without reason. Sure videogames arent the sole reason ofc. But Japan has seen a fair share of disrespect especially at shrines from certain "tourists". It's only logical to me that they would atleast discuss how media may shape these disrespectful individuals. Ac shadows just happens to be thenlatest and newest game they could've talked about. Its a sad situation but I can understand that theydwant this defacing and destruction of priceless and culturally significant places and objects to stop. Then again im not japanese so thisnis all just my 2 cents. As for the game itself I'm glad it looks and runs great story is fine so far (still havent unlocked yasuke but I cant wait to unlock him). Overall quite happy with it hopefully it doesnt drag on like valhalla did witch I've never finished due to the length and losing me about halfway I guess with its plot. Dear god I did not expect to write whole novel 0.0
So they like the setting and the weather system...but not one example where the game gets a good review score...this article is again nothing more than advertising for the game.
GoT was well received in Japan because it respected the Japanese and also didn't claim to be historically accurate. It was also a good game (gameplay), with an exciting story and strong characters.
I love both characters and I absolutely adore this game. Glad folks in Japan are enjoying as well.
Games good and I’m enjoying my time with it What isn’t good is the jarring drop to 30fps in cut scenes and at the hideout. Also the characters faces in cut scenes look really bad. Also the English dub is horrendous. It’s some of the worst voice acting I’ve ever heard.
@torquex ahh you mean that, nah you can skip them,.it's just some meditation thing,
If your a trophy hunter though you will need to do all of them,
But if not you can just leave them alone entirely. However they take about 1 minute easy ability points
Only one of those are a Japanese publication...
@KillerBoy so a good game needs defending?
"reports" in the 2nd graph is doing a lot of heavy lifting there...
@Kiefer-Sutherland "metacritic user reviews are painful to read"
Well I suppose it's good they have a creative outlet for their issues and they aren't taking it out on their pets. 😩
@Uromastryx Awesome
Pointless when the Ubisoft refuses to talk sales figures.
What little public information shows us that Sales in Japan are not impressive.
Shill all you want this game is utter garbage
