If you're into your mecha anime, chances are that you've heard of the Super Robot Wars franchise.

This tactical RPG series has been going on in Japan (and other Asian territories) for decades, but localisation efforts for western audiences have been practically nonexistent. Eager fans have had to import copies of the latest games for as long as we can remember.

That's all about to change this year, however. Bandai Namco has confirmed that a new instalment, simply titled Super Robot Wars Y, is getting a worldwide release in 2025. We used to pray for times like these, etc.

For those unfamiliar with Super Robot Wars, it's essentially one huge crossover property that covers entire generations of mecha manga and anime. The games usually feature some mad storyline where all of the pilots and their hulking humanoid machines are placed into a what-if timeline, where they're forced to fight side by side against an all-powerful threat.

The grid-based gameplay has you position your units and then engage in cinematic turn-based combat. It's like your typical strategy RPG, but with way more explosions and beam rifles. Building a dream team of your favourite mechs is a big part of the appeal.
