Co-publishers Saber Interactive and 3D Realms have announced Painkiller, a reboot of the highly acclaimed 2004 first-person shooter.
Coming to PS5 later this year, this is a "modern reimagining" of the cult classic FPS from developer Anshar Studios.
Painkiller is a high octane shooter cut from the same cloth as DOOM and Serious Sam, which is to say it's all about mowing down hordes of demonic enemies with speed and style.
Set in Purgatory, the game has you fighting for a shot at redemption, either solo or in three-player online co-op.

The reboot will feature both classic and all-new weaponry, as well as a tarot card system that allows you to enhance your abilities. When playing co-op, these can be combined with other players.
You'll also be able to select from four playable characters — Ink, Void, Sol, and Roch — each of whom have unique gameplay perks.
It looks like it could be a lot of fun, with co-op sounding like a great time especially. We're hopeful this will be a rock solid FPS when it comes out in fall 2025.
This won't be the first Painkiller to come to PlayStation; that honour goes to Painkiller: Hell & Damnation, a fairly poorly received remake/sequel on PS3.
Tangentially, the original Painkiller was the debut game from People Can Fly, a studio that would go on to make the likes of Bulletstorm and Outriders. That team has recently signed on with Sony to develop an original title under one of the platform holder's legacy IPs.
Anyway, are you excited about the revival of Painkiller on PS5? Hookshot into the comments section below.

Well this looks great.
Ooooh, hellooooo. Wishlisting this for sure.
Saber Interactive have been killing it lately.
I bought the first one on PC, but could never play it because of a "cyclic redundancy error". Glad I get to try again.
Is this co-op only?
@jFug nope.
It looks like doom eternal 2.0.and that's impressive.word up son
@Quintumply - The first console version wasn't Hell and Damnation on PS3. Painkiller Hell Wars was on OG Xbox in 2006.
We have seen horror games, jrpgs, soullikes, and other genres have their redemption arcs. I do truly hope we see a non live service fps redemption arc. Please be good.
Definitely interested in this. Looks solid and VERY DOOM-y.
Played it to dead on pc. Will pick it up when it's out!
@Shigurui Fixed 🫡
I'm excited and scared at once. I love to death Painkiller. Especially for it's havok engine usage so I'm scared unreal engine will make it less funny. PS3 P:H&D would be good if it won't suffer of that tragic camera movement. Well... I'll dust off my PC and run Black Edition soon.
Ive still got the original 3 disk boxset. Loved this game! That stake gun! Finding the secrets was sooo good too
I never played Painkiller but this looks awesome! I’ll definitely be checking it out.
@Quintumply - Wasn't trying to be that person but accuracy and all that.
Well, I’m wishlisting this. It looks dope, and I’m really loving this resurgence of first person shooters. Metal Eden, La Chimera, Doom, and this? Let’s go!
