Sony and Kojima Productions have today announced Death Stranding 2: On the Beach will launch for PS5 on 26th June 2025. The release date was confirmed as part of an SXSW panel hosted by Hideo Kojima with a new 10-minute trailer to match, which you can watch above.
Pre-orders will go live on 17th March, and a Collector's Edition confirms two days of early access if you buy that version. The Collector's Edition contains the following:
- Full PS5 game (digital download)
- 15" Magellan Man statue
- Art cards
- Letter from Hideo Kojima
- 3" Dollman figurine
- Pre-order bonus content
- In-game items (3 patches, 3 skeleton legs, machine gun early unlock)

The trailer is made up of completely new, unseen footage, and includes gameplay clips and cutscenes. A number of new characters are introduced, including one played by Debra Wilson and another that clearly looks like Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid. Currently, the game is releasing as a PS5 exclusive.

Mind blown right here! Can't bloody wait
Kojima clearly ingested the most potent form of LSD when he came up with some of these images and scenes. Even by wacko Kojima standards, this looks WILD.
Couldn't get into the first game, but might give it another try. The world is really interesting.
I love when a big game reveals the release date only a few months ahead of time. So fricken hyped for this. I had to stop watching the trailer because it showed to much.
The first game was not for me, but this one seems to have more action and be different.
Will wait for reviews etc to what the all important game play is like for me.
@Americansamurai1 This is largely the same for me. I think there's something there, but there's a lot stuff in Death Stranding that turned me off from actually playing it. With that said, I do feel the pull to picking it up again.
Looks really good with lots of Kojima craziness. I loved the first game so I'm looking forward to this.
I absolutely loved the first game so I’m really excited to play on the beach. Looks like I’m replaying the fist in May now to get myself back into his world
The imagery is insane. You don't often see a game on this scale where it's the work of someone with a clear vision.
Can't freaking wait.
OMFG! I haven’t bought a new game in two years, but will be playing this one on release day.
“Early Access”
Not liking this nonsense at all.

Curious to see when ghost 2 is released. Has to be before gta 6, so maybe August?
This looks absolutely sensational. I mean, the cinematography alone, and the amount of things happening on screen is insane. And the headband? Is this somehow connected to Metal Gear Solid? It sure as heck looked like it. Regardless, I can’t wait for this, and the release date is perfect.
At this point I think the only people interested in this are hardcore Kojima fans. The first Death Stranding was divisive and didn’t seem to appeal to people outside of his core fanbase. Maybe the sequel is better but I don’t know how interested people will be in jumping into this a second time.
First game really surprised me. Before I was done I had 500 hours into it and 100% completion. Im not a completionist and despite 40 years of gaming have fully completed under 10 games.
Needless to say im both excited and fearful for this game. I dont have the time I used to.
@Jireland92
The first game sold 19 million units and many of those were long after it was a PS4 exclusive and became available on other platforms. There's a very active community on PC especially. This will sell.
@Jireland92 Giving the sales of the first game i think plenty are interested in this.
That looked incredible, it just kept going and going and it was fantastic with every surprise! Only things I hope get improved are the dogshit physics of the cars, the gunplay just a little bit, and the stealth.
@Jireland92 Maybe Im an outlier, but I dont like any kojima game other than death stranding. The mgs games never clicked with me. DS had a rythmn to it which was soothing
@Kraven Nah I highly doubt it would be connected to MGS otherwise we would've seen some sort of logo from Konami.
Damn this year is fully loaded with great AAA games. My PS5 Pro is ready.
@Jireland92 This sounds like a “I didn't like it so I don’t understand why others do” statement. Please do correct me if I’m wrong in this.
DS2 will sell and sell well, as did DS1. I’m sure as hell looking forward to it.
I expected it later in the year.
@ChrisDeku I knew PlayStation would start doing early access eventually, but I strongly dislike it as well, especially for such a narrative-heavy game like this.
@PegasusActual93 yeah, about that, I don’t believe that number for a second. Check it, in March of 2022 the games sales were around 5 million units. Impressive yes but still 5 million overall. And yet in 2024 the game was said to have sold 19 million units. So in only 2 years it sold an extra 14 million units? Even factoring in the PC port that’s a little ridiculous. Especially for a game that hasn’t had a large cultural footprint. If the game is that popular then where are the memes for it. Metal Gear Rising didn’t sell nearly that well and look how many memes spawned.
Obviously memes aren’t an indicator for success, but my point is I haven’t really seen people talk about the game much since its release. I have to press x to doubt on that 19 million. I’m not saying it couldn’t happen, but for a game whose critical reception was very mixed, I don’t see how it was possible. For the record I haven’t played the game, wasn’t too interested in it, I’m just going by what I was able to gather online. People seemed to love or hate it, so that’s why I called it divisive.
I’m locking it in now.
DS2, GOTY 2025.
Trailer was, as to be expected, super self indulgent, but I can't deny it's quite the visual spectacle. I just really hope the story will resonate more this time around.
The gameplay looks similar to the first game, but with more detailed graphics. So no big surprise here.
But why is actual gameplay only visible for a few seconds in a 10 minute trailer, while it will be 90% of your playtime?
Damn! Too soon! I wanted to play the directors cut before it came out. Figured I’d have till the fall-ish.
I wanted to like the first game. While the world building and imagery was interesting, the story and most importantly the gameplay totally put me off, so I quit after just a couple of hours in and never went back to it despite having it on my ps+. I'm still considering giving this one a chance but not on day one obviously.
@Max_the_German it’s kojima, that’s why
Copyright-less snake 🐍
@Jireland92 it was also ported to iPhones/iPads but yeah as much as I love the game and found it brilliant - I would say it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Maybe not divisive but not mainstream either.

I’m so excited! Death Stranding is the game that made me a Kojima believer 😩
@Max_the_German
Number of GoTY wins:
Death Stranding: 118
Mario Odyssey: 37
Doom Eternal:14
Maaaan June is going to be a good month.
@Max_the_German imagine thinking Kojima games have bad gameplay 🫣
Collector's Edition full of tat and no physical disc? Count me in! 😂

Not even going to watch this trailer, already sold, no spoilers please! The original Death Stranding was an incredible experience; a work of artistic genius in gaming form. I imagine this will only exceed my expectations. Best part is that it comes out during Summer vacation yeaaaaaasah!
The Collector’s Edition looks lovely, but no disc… hmmmm…
George Miller is hype for me, Mad Max did so much for cinema. So very excited for this game.
"with the help of Guerilla". Hopefully it's only for computer graphics and not for writing the story or characters.
When will they realise that people DON'T like to see the entire game months before it's released. It's so much better to have complete surprises.
That was an even better trailer than the 1st one which was already pretty hype. They upped their game with those gorgeous looking new locations. And the new bts look even crazier. I'm so glad I gave the 1st game a chance
It's nice to see folks genuinely excited for a PS5 game and I hope it lives up to expectations. Personally it's not for me though.
My entire experience of the first one was me going ok it will get better soon just give it another hour. I was just giving it another hour waiting for it to be fun through the entire game. It was never fun and my over riding impressions was I was bored.
I gave it more chances than I have ever done with any game ever and it just wasn't it for me. Not making that mistake again or wasting my time on the second one
While all that is pretty negative I do genuinely hope folks who play this actually enjoy & have fun with it. Just because something doesn't work for me it's no reason to poop on other folks fun.
Amazing trailer! Didnt expect it to release in June already with Lost Soul Aside in May, but wont complain. Day 1 for me 100%.
I got goosebumps from the trailer like hot damn Kojima aims for a double home run with this game. It looks crazier, more actions, and definitely plenty of new gameplay loops.
Oh and the music, i don't know who's Woodkid but his vocal in the trailer are great.
@Max_the_German I had a lot of fun playing Kojima games. From Snatcher, MGS, Zone of the Enders, to Death Stranding. And you're saying Kojima games doesn't have engaging story? Lol that's just ignorant af.
@Jireland92 You didn't played Death Stranding so why are you here arguing with people who played and loves the game and excited to play the sequel???
What perfect timing - my high school is out for our ten week summer break that same day! I've only played MGSV and DS1 from Kojima but they are both masterpieces of the medium for me.
Edit: I hope there is a 40fps fidelity option on the base PS5 otherwise I'm going to have to get a Pro for this game.
I actually got choked up watching this. My best friend and wife just had a daughter in December so it hit extra hard on that level. He’s also getting this and is a huge fan of Kojima/MGS/DS. I’m freaking stoked for this game…
Haha this is Peak Kojima. Day One.
Dang, would’ve loved for this to be June 24th on my birthday. Guess I’ll settle for birthday week.
@Jireland92 Avatar has no memes but the 3rd film this year will still cross 2B at the box office.
@CWill97 Ask the Collectors Edition for ur birthday, 48 hours early access makes it 24th of June.
Kojima still out here elevating games to a higher art form. This trailer was beautiful! One of the best lately, together with the trailer for Ghost of Yotei.
Man, those landscapes in the gameplay sections look gorgeous!
And Solid Snake!? This is going to be epic
The game world from DS1 was amazing. I was not really a fan of running around tiny levels after Mads Micklesen, but wow i loved that game world. It reminded me of an old Atari ST game called Midwinter. Im totally up for this plus ive got two weeks off close to the release so i know what im doing this summer
This just became my most expected game for the whole year (at least dates ones lol).
Anyone who wants to watch Woodkid - To the Wilder song from the trailer, here's the official music clip
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BSN1rPPKK9s
Amazing, simply amazing 😭
I still haven't played the first game yet but I was looking at the games to stream on my Portal and the Directors Cut is on there so it might be my next Portal only game.
@UltimateOtaku91 Same, im not going to watch it as barely played the first but starting to get FOMO.
The Decima engine is something special alright.

This looks absolutely incredible. Just like that, I have a new #1 most anticipated game. Loved the first one, this looks like something else.
@ChrisDeku Yep risky for major spoilers too. It's the last game I'd have expected to see given early access. I don't see the sense in it.
Well I wanted something to truly show me what PS5 and my newish TV can do, so maybe this is that title. Visually it's mind blowing. Looks mad as a box of frogs, but at least as a visual showcase it looks pretty special. I'm still not entirely clear what I would be doing which put me off the first game, but I think I will try this
@Jireland92 You keep proving my “I didn’t like or try the game, therefore no one else did and it couldn’t possibly have been a success” theory correct.
@Nalim that would be amazing but it doesn’t even have a physical disc nor steelbook for $230ish I believe. Plus, $230 is a lot 😭😭😭😭 I’ll buy a piggy bank and start saving today tho 😂😂😂
@Jireland92 It wasn't 19 million units sold it was 19 million "players", that's combining sales for the PS4, PS5 and PC and those that played it for "free" on Playstation Plus and Gamepass.
@UltimateOtaku91 Yeah the last sales update was 10 million sold on Playstation and PC back in 2022 but obviously it's more than that now anyway I just watched the trailer for the second time and I'm hyped for it.
https://www.pcgamer.com/death-stranding-hits-10-million-sales-as-it-celebrates-its-third-birthday/
EDIT: Steam estimates have it at about 2 million on PC.
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare They released a long trailer before the first one came out. Surprisingly it actually didn’t spoil the whole game.
This one likely hasn’t either.
I started listening to Woodkid after the Death Stranding directors cut trailer dropped - the song in that trailer really elevated it to my favourite game trailer of all time and it still is. DS2 trailer shows incredible imagination and I can't wait for the game but damn it's about five to seven minutes too long. Trailers in every medium are way too long and are sometimes better than the final product (looking at you Mickey 17).
@MrMagic I didn't know DS sold 10 million copies sold in 2022.
I remembered DS sold 3 million copies back in 2019 and then 5 million copies in May 2020, which Kojima claimed the game already recoup the cost and turn profit. So 10 million copies in 2022 means the game made a very nice moolah for Kojima ☺️
But what i don't get is there're people who still claim DS didn't sold well and they believe Kojima is lying about about DS sales 🤣
Even Digital Bros, 505 Games parent company, who published DS for PC report that the game sold well on PC and made $27 million revenue which was the company highest grossing game in 2020.
https://www.gamespot.com/articles/death-stranding-did-very-well-on-pc-earning-27-million/1100-6489840/
I guess some people hate Kojima so much that they can't stand to see him got big success with Death Stranding.
Glad too see another date on the board!!!! Seems like Kojima is going balls too the wall with this and that’s cool as ***** too see.
Finally time to play the first soon perhaps.
On my birthday too, don't think I'll be getting though as it doesn't look like my kind of game!
The CE seems pretty overpriced for not even having a physical game or steelbook in it. I was already on the fence, but seeing no disc option will make me pass on this one.... and many others im sure
@guacguacboo This is the benefit of Sony keeping things close to its chest and not pulling the trigger too early.
I know this one was announced before but keeping it relatively under wraps until it’s almost ready is nice.
@themightyant Highly recommended. Fantastic game.
I tried the first game on ps5, pc, steam deck. I just couldn’t get into it more than 7-8 hours. Pretty videos, but the gameplay was not for me.
@dskatter I never said no one else liked it. I said people either loved it or hated it. The game has its fans, I don’t dispute that, but i don’t think it has many fans outside of Kojimas established fanbase. Metal Gear had a wide appeal Death Stranding doesn’t because Death Stranding is a very weird, very different kind of game. IIRC even Kojima’s team weren’t fully convinced of the project when they were making it, that’s how different the game is.
Finally watched the trailer. Absolutely incredible.
Current-gen Decima looks absolutely obscenely good.
@UltimateOtaku91 I’m well aware, I did some research after and found out that’s what he meant. I also did a bit more research to see if the game truly was as popular and here’s something I found. On the games trophy list, it says that around 42% of players finished chapter 14, the final chapter of the game. Meaning that less than half of the player base actually bothered to finish it. Not complete it, finish it. For reference, God of War Ragnaroks trophy for finishing it has a completion rate of 70%, which is more in line with what I expect.
That’s not good. Now that only accounts for the PS version. Steam might be a different story I’m not sure, but I can’t imagine the percentage is all that different. For the record I don’t care if people are excited for this. If they are, good I hope it lives up to their hype. All I’m saying is I don’t think the wider gaming audience is as receptive to it as you think. And I think Kojima knows this, hence the obvious nostalgia bait with legally distinct Solid Snake.
@Americansamurai1 Same here, seems no matter how hard I try I can't get into it!
It's the most interesting thing Sony has on the slate amongst the sequels and spin-offs. Yes, it's a sequel, but the original was so...original, creative and challenging that i'm very interested to see how its themes are developed.
There's a lot of "i couldnt get into the first game" comments, which is fair enough. But my reflection on that is that people sit down in front of a game and demand to be entertained on a minute-by-minute basis. The media must bend to their gratification. That's its function. Boredom is not an acceptable scenario.
How can you make a game about trudging across America and boredom NOT be a mechanic? Falling over a rock and losing all your stuff for the last 30 minutes IS the game.
The original game was a satire on our childlike desire to be gratified by things and distractions - bread and circuses - and both the loss of grasp of what is real and the isolation from other living things we are imposing on ourselves in the process. Those bored by the satire probaby didnt get the irony.
Loved the first game and looking forward to this, they say deliveries are automated so does that mean more combat? It was a great experience and this looks more of the same with extra shinny black goo
Tried the first game couple of times, but it didn’t click with me, at least enough to play through the whole game, so I can’t imagine this’d be any different. Might watch a playthrough though, because it sure looks pretty.
This looks amazing and makes me wish I actually enjoyed DS
Loved the first title.
But anyone even remotely excited by the media of gaming and gaming tech should be moved by seeing this trailer. It's absolutely magnificent.
@get2sammyb I was thinking the same thing. There are some cracking engines and development tools out there nowadays but the relatively few Decima games look consistently stunning and seem to push the medium forward visually each time.
Absolutely INCREDIBLE.
@Nepp67 Yes and the UI/ maps/ menus.
But other than that, this looks insane! I loved the first one and this looks like it's going through the roof
@Jireland92 The fact they've made a sequel, says it all, no?
I've never liked any other Kojima games, but fell in love with DS, and I think this could be the same for many gamers. You can just walk around and soak up the secenery while listening to music if you want. Or do missions, combat, build stuff and interact with other player. It's pure magic IMO.
A lot remains to be seen as far as the gameplay is concerned, but it looks like they kept the core elements from the first game while adding more equipment/abilities to increase the fun factor... Along with incorporating some more traditional action and gunplay for the people that felt like the original was just a "walking simulator." (It wasn't of course, but the new gameplay elements are welcome regardless.)
I won't even comment on the insertion of a Solid Snake analogue into the storyline. Kojima is an absolute madman. I'd love to see the discussions he had with Kojima Productions' legal team before pulling the trigger on that one.
@BeenGamingSince_83 well we do know it’s confirmed to have sold 5 million units. It reached 19 million players but that could be due to a bunch of different factors. Regardless the official trophy list shows less than half the people who played it finished it. So while the first was a financial success it didn’t resonate with everyone who played it. The jury is out on whether the sequel will be able to bring copy the success of the first.
@Americansamurai1
I’m pretty sure that GTA6 isn’t going to be out till near the end of the year or delayed to 2026, that’s my guess anyway that Rockstar will release it near to Christmas
Still haven’t gotten round to finishing the first Death Stranding yet probably gonna do the free upgrade to the PS5 directors cut version next month as I don’t think I’ll round to it this month.
Be great birthday present for me as it’s my birthday on the 29th of June.
I’m still wanting for a release window at least for Wolverine and Kotor Remake (if it’s not cancelled)
@Jireland92 Basing games on trophies is a really bad metric, because the reality is that casuals often never finish games, and casual are the bulk of the market.
For example only 47% finished the last mission in GTA V (on PS3). So should we say that game didn't resonate with people and therefore GTA VI will get less sales than it. Most casuals will simply get distracted by the new thing and don't care enough to think twice about it.
@Dragoon1994 probably October or November, so September would be the latest they would want to release ghost 2.
I don’t know about anything else but this is surely the single greatest line ever published on PushSquare.
@Americansamurai1
August time possibly, they’ll most likely show something at the Summer Games Fest if they don’t have another state of play.
I really hope that Wolverine and the remake of Kotor aren’t cancelled
@Dragoon1994 I don't think they'll cancel wolverine since it's going sell millions, not sure about kotor though. Really hope we get a showcase so we know what's coming the rest of this gen.
@Jireland92 Trophies are irrelevant for many people. Some people doesn't even sync up their trophies after they finished a game. So trophies is not a good way to gauge a game popularity nor how a sequel gonna sell.
FYI. RE 2 remake has 43% average completion rate but RE 3 remake still manage to sold 9.3 million copies. And RE 3 remake has 54% average completion rate but RE 4 remake manage to sold 9 million copies.
As for Death Stranding didn't resonate with every single person who played it based on trophies completion, lol bruh, are you kidding me?
There's no game on this planet earth that can resonate to every single person who played it, not even popular ones like GTA 5, FF VII, Zelda BotW, Skyrim, Witcher 3, Fortnite, Elden Ring, TloU, CoD etc. All of them has their own haters, detractors, or non-believers.
But i personally don't care for people who didn't like Death Stranding. I just hope those people can find whatever games that fit their taste rather than trolling people who enjoyed DS...
@Americansamurai1
That’s true but with everything that’s been leaked for Wolverine hasn’t done Insomniac much justice though, I’m hoping they show some gameplay themselves at a showcase soon though as a well as a new trailer.
Kotor remake will sell millions as well, everyone that watched the announcement trailer were very excited for it.
Both were announced in 2021, nothing new for either yet.
Kojima’s other game he is working will be out in a few years and I also know there’s Phantom Blade Zero due out next year
@ChrisDeku It sounds like a gen Z thing. They cared a lot about meme to the point their own life is a meme.
@Dragoon1994 yeah but you have to remember that's from like an alpha build so I'm sure it's a lot more redefined now. I think the only thing that is hurting kotor was thq and the developer who got switched to another developer, there were a lot of internal struggles and saber is now independent so hopefully they still have the license. Yeah both were announced too early. I think two years is the maximum for showing a game early.
@Ilyn Tbf I don’t think GTA is a good example of that since most who play it just ***** around in the open world. It’s probably better to compare DS to games more akin to it. But I get what you’re saying it’s not a perfect metric for judging these things.
We are not ready....
So no pc or xbox release date? Is it a timed ps5 exclusive?
@Americansamurai1 @Dragoon1994 I think for the big single player games we'll see something like:
@Grumblevolcano seems like a long time for the Santa Monica game since it's been in development since 2019, but who knows. What about venom?
@Americansamurai1
Venom hasn’t actually been officially confirmed or announced to be happening
@Dragoon1994 yeah but we know it's coming
looks like this is will be a fedex simulator i spent 100+ hours the first time around and promised myself i wouldn't do that again unless kojima subverted expectations and switched up the genre. imagine if 5 hours into death stranding 2, he did exactly that? not likely, though...
