Naughty Dog studio head Neil Druckmann has warned in a new interview that you should not expect The Last of Us 3 to be a surefire bet that actually gets made in the future. Despite the open-ended conclusion of the second game and his claim there's "probably one more chapter to the story", Druckmann suggests there aren't any guarantees around a third game.
The comment comes from a new interview with Variety discussing HBO's second season of its TV adaptation of The Last of Us. Towards the end of the piece, Druckmann is asked about The Last of Us 3. He responds: "I was waiting for this question. I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of Last of Us. This could be it."
Druckmann's latest quote somewhat goes against what he said at the ending to Naughty Dog's documentary for The Last of Us 2, which took a deep dive into the development of the sequel. At the time, he explained he had been unable to find a concept for a third The Last of Us game, "but recently that's changed" (as of February 2023). The concept he had was "as exciting as [The Last of Us] one, as exciting as [The Last of Us] two. It's its own thing and yet has this throughline for all three. So it does feel like there's probably one more chapter to the story."
Of course, since the documentary aired, Naughty Dog announced PS5 title Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. It was assumed The Last of Us 3 wouldn't be the developer's next project after the second game released in 2020, and during that time span, The Last of Us Multiplayer was cancelled. At the time of its scrapping, Naughty Dog said it had "more than one ambitious, brand new single player game".
Do you still feel like The Last of Us 3 will become a reality one day, or has Druckmann poured cold water on your hopes? Let us know in the comments below.

I call cap, Neil.
it would be a massive missed financial opportunity for Sony if there wasn't a last of us 3
I would be shocked if we don't get Part III.
so no last of us factions a live service game that would actually do well and now no last of us 3 a game that would sell millions while the tv show is garnering attention
look i get naughty dog dont want to just be the last of us studio why not let another sony studio Bend? run with it
I think Ellie’s story still has one more game left in it.
Better fix the ending then
This is the same group that gave us the Joel/Jesse TLOU2 trailer swap so they don't have the best relationship with credibility.
Absolutely loved both part1 and 2, sure a part 3 would be awesome, but if there isn't a part 3 it's all gd as well as I'm sure the other single player games that are in the pipeline will be fantastic as typical naughty dog never seem to miss on single player games
I could see one more Last of Us game down the line, to tie up the story.
Sony won't let the cash cow go dry. Almost zero chance a 3rd game doesn't happen at some point (and i do not mean this as a criticism. Part 2 is fantastic)
While I think there's more to the story, I'm not that sure how many more interesting scenarios the series can cook up gameplay-wise. How many more times can we sneak up on clickers in derelict buildings, for example? I'm not sure the gameplay can sustain it for a full third chapter without it feeling too much like more of the same. I'm sure they could cook up a wonderful story though.
Is he reading valves playbook? Specifically the one that says, "do not make a third game."
Don’t make part 3 but they could make other stories from other locations. I never want to see Ellie again tbh.
You’ve no idea how irritated I was that I’d spent 40 hours wanting to kill Abby just for that dumb ending. Moronic
neil has to get dismissed by sony..
With the success of the series outside of games, I'd be surprised if Sony didn't try hard to have ND make one more game in the series!
Doesn't have to be a new numbered title, it could be a spin off with totally different characters. So he may not be lying but I definitely can't see Sony not doing anything with that series/world.
@trev666 I mean it was a massive missed financial opportunity to not develop another installment of Crash, Jak, or Uncharted...but they moved on when they felt done, and created something new. Let's see if they stick to the same principle on this one.
I bet there's a Part 3 eventually, but after Intergalactic so we'll see it in like 10 years at ND's pace. Better to talk down the possibility.
I'm OK with no more. I was fine with it ending with 1, it was a great haunting ending, but 2 caught me by surprise and I really enjoyed it. Regardless, I'm interested to see them develop new IPs at this point, LoU has left its mark.
I have a hard time understanding how Sony handles its IPs. If Nintendo did the same, it would be out of business - I mean, Mario has saved Peach and defeated Bowser, Link defeated Ganon and Ganondorf, Donkey Kong saved its island, Kirby planet is at peace and Nook's latest enterprise was successful.
Last of Us and Uncharted, to name a few from Naughty Dog, are great games for more reasons than just their story.
Sony knows full well that part 3 will not even come close to the sales figures of part 1 and will even sell worse than part 2. And that part 3 will also be much more expensive.
No matter what people say online, part 2 killed the franchise. Joel should never have been killed!
It is completely understandable why Sony does not give the green light.
It will have always ended with tlou for me
Loved the 1st, but didn't get the second due to the character choices being that felt like certain agendas were being shoved down throats, so I'm glad there is no 3rd.. Saying that, I really did wish there would be an expanded multiplayer as I loved the first one
I’m completely fine with there not being a part 2. After what they did to my man Joel, my interest vanished.
And Druckman can't bet we actually want a 3rd one.
The second was unnecessary from a story perspective (though mechanics are prob still the best to this day), it sold millions less and divided the fan base.
Itll be 10 years before the next game after intergalactic is ready. So itll be 10 years atleast till the chance of a new naughty dog game excites me
This is for the best, sadly. Druckmann's writing is abysmal without adult supervision (Bruce Straley, Craig Mazin, etc.)
Would love a TLOU spinoff by a new team at ND.
Having setup the world/universe, I believe there is a lot more to explore and Naughty Dog do such a great job with environments and environmental story telling that I can only imagine how many fantastic games could be made in the series.
Having stuffed up the Joel/Ellie story though, I'd like to see a different story, with a different set of characters, somewhere else in the US. I hope they avoid the temptation to set it in another country.
To be honest they should have left TLoU 1 where it ended, and done the above for the sequel. My advice would be to have a story/characters that are contained to one game each time.
@VaultGuy415 - you make an interesting point. It's almost as if the characters in TLoU 2 were written by a different person to whoever wrote them in TLoU 1.
Though I find both parts great, I already feel oversaturated by tlou after only 2 games. Same goes for Horizon and it's sequel.
I'm happy for naughty dog's new sci-fi game and am always open to more uncharted. Despite having 6 games I just never got tired of it and still love to replay them all.
That kinda grim ending for Ellie could be kinda cool to leave it there like that.
Maybe a liv and Abby spin off just to watch the meltdown from fully grown men
@Flaming_Kaiser The ending was perfect. Ellie went on a path of revenge and it cost her dearly. The ending shows that.
It cost her her relationship with her spouse and adopted child, and cost her the one thing that Joel taught her and that she could have passed on to her child. How to play guitar.
Losing 2 fingers on her fretting hand was just like losing Joel all over again. That is what I took from the ending.
My theory is that with the games and working on the HBO adaptation, he will likely wrap up the story with HBO and can move on to new things like Intergalactic.
@Kriandis Nah. There are more money to be made with a part three. It's better than another Concord.
@RenanKJ I think it could be like the DKC/Metroid Prime dilemma. Retro Studios did the Metroid Prime games and the 2 most recent DK games (DKC Returns in 2010 and DKC Tropical Freeze in 2014). Metroid Prime 4 exists and is releasing in 2025 but DK has been absent outside of remasters since 2014.
So the comparison to Naughty Dog would be that by not committing to TLoU 3, it opens the possibility of Intergalactic getting a sequel in the PS6 era.
Yeah don't see that not happening. If naughty dog doesn't do it I expect another studio will. Sony has invested way to much to let the franchise die
Nah I don't believe him. I bet there will be a 3rd. But if I'm wrong well no harm no foul.
Looking forward to Intergalactic!
wasn't there a rumor they are working on two single player games right now , if its not last of us what is the 2nd game
I would be much more upset if there were no Part 3 than if they just ended it with the first game.
The end of the first game was bold, courageous, and perfect.
The ending of the second makes me want a third game, I want to see how the characters finish their arcs, I want to see Ellie get redemption and reckon with her choices and mistakes.
No third game makes the series feel unfinished in a way that just ending it with one game wouldn't have.
That's bull. But I wish they would go back to Uncharted one day.
Also, Neil is so so so hated online, I fear the next game will not sell as much as they want
@Gelloh Personally, I don't see the issue with this. It wasn't maliciously "misleading" or anything.
I'd argue it serves it purpose, by making a certain scene even more impactful because you didn't see it coming(if it somehow wasn't spoiled for you after that insane leak 😂)
What a surprise. When he killed Joel off in the second game, it really made making anything meaningful for a 3rd game extremely difficult for fans to want. Neil even said he was having a hard time coming up with a story. If he wanted to kill Joel off so much, he should have done it at the end of a 3rd game and gone out like that. That would have been way more acceptable for myself.
This would honestly kinda ruin the story for Part 2, it’d confirm that story was aimless in some bits as many storylines were left inconclusive and direction for some of them were baffling at best, and I’m not asking for a happy ending but there’s a chance to tie up all storylines in another game, if they really can’t then they shouldn’t have made Part 2 the way they did.
I loved 1, didn’t like 2, and have zero interest in playing as Ellie or Abby again.
I feel sorry for Naughty Dog / Druckmann. There’s so many mixed messages they are getting from the fandom. Each camp of those who want more Last of Us and those that don’t are quite vocal. People want a new IP from them so they announce Intergalactic, and then people scream for more Last of Us… people don’t want a multiplayer Factions and then they do. The studio is probably dizzy with all the flip-flopping.
In the end, the right answer should be for them to make the games they want to make, and just the games they feel passionate about, creatively speaking. Then it will likely be a good game that sells well.
Ellie is done but abby and levs... i will like to see the series from there point. Is a new story to be told as the firefl... still out theere. Ellie go back to the city and stay with his love. The city prospect and the city grows. Yara yara yara
Abby and levs go out there in a new adventures to find a cure or i dont know, maybe parents still alive or... anyways.
But for sure has to be a TLOU 3.
Or.. maybe just maybe the ellies mom still alive. Because theres no proof of ellies mom death. Just marlene told about his death. Maybe, just maybe. But theeres too much in this world to be told.
Well that s*cks if true. Was hoping for this to be released on the PS5 so the story feels finished. Part 2 has so much plot holes ans unfinished story elements.
Just remove him if this is how he is going to write his stories. This news makes me less excited for intergelatic to be honest. Way to go PlayStation another franchise flushed down the toilet.
@AFCC i thought there was a rumor going around that a new studio based out of san degio was working on a new uncharted game , not sure whats going on with that project , i like suprises but it feels like sony being too tight lipped about these projects is too much.
@homelesscretin I don't disagree about intention. I don't think there was anything malicious implied in this. However, it was misleading and attacks at their communication credibility.
It doesn't need a part 3, but I'd be shocked if we don't see one. As a cross media mega hit, you can guarantee someone will make it happen..
@Th3solution Show's You that people don't know what they want. But one thing I do know is that a lot of the people that want the last of us gone will start careing about the franchise when it's not being made anymore
This sounds pretty good to me
Even Nietzsche had zero sympathy for the nihilist. Two was enough for me so I'm happy this series is done with.
I'll take a 3rd game with a happy ending
Part 3 would be very expensive. Would the potential sales numbers justify the high costs (from Sony’s perspective)?
There's definitely gonna be a part 3, there has to be right. Guessing if any big new story it'll be expanded on another tv season, which would be so lame if you ask me. Hopefully they've already got a part 3 game story all planned out but not working on it because of Intergalactic and are just teasing that part 3 ain't happening for when they actually reveal it in a few years from now for shock values after we were all expecting nothing for a part 3 ever again
I’m fine with there not being a third game. The two games itself are some of my all time favorite games, particularly the first one, which I doubt any game will dismantle as #1 for me. However, I just don’t see where the story could go from the ending of TLoU2, featuring the same characters, without losing the emotional aspect. I feel as if we got everything we needed from an emotion standpoint—everything came full circle, and was handled as best as it could. Now, I wouldn’t mind seeing a prequel to the first game, with Joel and Tess, since 20 years passed by before really introducing us to the game. I think that would be a great story to tell because of how Tommy talks about Joel’s ruthlessness and what they did to survive. It would make an excellent re-introduction to some beloved characters. But hey, if not, I’m not excited that Naughty Dog is moving on to other projects.
I'm completely fine with whatever they decide to do with it. Few games have ever approached the impact both The Last of Us Part 1 and 2 had on me, and if Part 3 never happens, that wouldn't take anything away from those experiences.
However, if they do end up making a third game, it will be because they feel it's worth making. In that case, sign me up.
I'll self-unalive myself if I don't get another TLOU game. I don't NEED part 3, but I NEED Factions and I NEED another new entry. The obvious place to draw from is the 20 years between 0 day and when Part 1 starts. There's so much to draw from there
I absolutely loved both parts and would love a part 3.
I’m happy leaving TLoU behind. Part 1 is my favourite. Even though I enjoyed part 2, it was nowhere as special and it won’t get that same greatness part 1 has. It’s not the same without Joel so for me it’s time to move onto new things
Where else could the story go? Revenge is a dish best never served. Ellie got everything she deserved at the end. Abby also came to that conclusion. I doubt their continuing stories amounted to much else.
I would love Part 3 as the final but if ND / Neil thinks there's no guarantee for Part 3 then i'm okay for TloU end with Part 2. If devs doesn't feel they could do more with the series then let that series end.
But i feel one of the reason Neil said this is because he / ND / Sony doesn't want to deal with toxic reactions including death threats towards him and the actors like Part 2 again.
I don't need or even necessarily a LoU3. I think it could be one of those things that could fall in danger of going on perpetually like the Walking Dead. Not everything needs to be a Trilogy.
@Vladspartan Druckmann, is that you??
Well if the show keeps being a success, Sony is going to make them do it. It’s not always up to them what games they make.
@Anthony_Daniels
Your comment, ironically, is quite immature.
Another story focusing on Abby and Liv would be a financial disaster, almost undoubtedly selling less than TLoU part 2, which already sold 11mil to TLoU’s 30mil. Abby is not very likable to most people—or at minimum, no where near the level of characters like Ellie, Joel, Nathan Drake, Sully, Elena, Chloe, Cutter, etc. Her personality was boring and dull, which is impressive considering her legendary actress. Liv was even more dull. How many people’s “top 10 VG characters of all time” lists do you think Abby and Liv would show up on? Or even top 20?
Ellie and Joel are some of the most beloved video game characters of all time. Regardless of the main characters, if you make TLoUp3 not focusing on Ellie—after you already offed Joel in the first 2h of part 2, followed by giving only 50% of the remaining playtime with Ellie–people would be, imo rightfully, pissed off. And unless they crushed it with the new main character and gameplay, it would bomb.
This is fine by me and I actually like 2. Bring on Intergalactic, I'll be there day one.
@CP2 "than TLoU part 2, which already sold 11mil to TLoU’s 30mil"
11 million doesn't include the remastered which i heard it sold really well and better than TloU 1 remake at launch.
https://www.vgchartz.com/article/459909/ps5-best-seller-in-europe-in-january-2024-the-last-of-us-part-ii-remastered-debuts-in-2nd/
And obviously TloU 1 sold more than TloU 2 when the game was released more than 11 years ago compare to TloU 2 was released 4 years ago. Not to mention Tlou 1 got massive sales boost from people who watched the Tv show season 1.
I'm sure TloU 2 definitely will get sales boost from season 2 + 3. I predict it'll reach 15-20 million copies in the next 3-5 years.
Good, they killed Joel just to follow an early 2020's feminist trend of having "strong women" as leads instead of men, now after the backlash of Intergalatic they're afraid of keep going down the route of the 2nd game.
@PuppetMaster
That’s not how it normally works, though. The sequel to an enormously beloved game like TLOU would normally be expected to sell gangbusters, often better than the original, as long as the sequel is not a major let down. Look at God of War 2018 to Ragnarok: 2018 sold around 23mil copies by the time of Ragnarok’s release, and then Ragnarok sold 11mil copies within 2 or so months. And Ragnarok, while still high quality, was considered a worse game than 2018 by many or most people.
Last official data I tracked for TLoUp2 was “>10mil” as of Spring 2022. I added 1mil sales to account for additional time, but that’s certainly a guesstimate. You may be right that the remake sold well, though how many of those sales are from people getting the $10 upgrade like what I did?
Also, it’s been nearly 5y since TLoUp2’s, so sales at this point, outside of likely decent boosts from seasons 2 and 3 of the show, are inevitably at a slog.
I’ve never understood all the online vitriol against Part II… personally I found it compelling, emotional, true to the characters’ motivations, a top-notch work of pacing and action, and a very “just” ending (albeit painful to experience as the player) for the lead characters, who were all flawed in their own ways.
And besides the game itself, being “anti strong women” — physically, emotionally, however you read that really — is surely a patently ridiculous notion when you look at either history or storytelling right through societies (not just the “Western” ones either) as a whole. This isn’t an “agenda” thing, it’s just how the character was defined. Would the “offended” people have been happier had Abby been male? Why would that have made their drive and determination for blind revenge more believable or palatable?? To my mind, it’s quite the opposite — there’s more impact in Abby “becoming” the Abby, in Ellie “becoming” the Ellie, that we see by the final act of Part II because of how hardened they have become through their experiences (see also, arguably, Lara Croft across the Tomb Raider “reboot” trilogy from 2013–2018).
tl;dr loved Part I, loved Part II, and with the right story I’d love a Part III should it ever materialise.
I don't bet on anything made by Neil, but he has his fans, i'm sure
@CP2 "That’s not how it normally works, though. The sequel to an enormously beloved game like TLOU would normally be expected to sell gangbusters, often better than the original, as long as the sequel is not a major let down"
But TloU 2 did sold gangbuster. 10-11+ million in 4 years is pretty amazing and it's still selling contrary to some people claim that it didn't sell well or stop selling.
https://twistedvoxel.com/the-last-of-us-part-2-remastered-best-selling-game-2024/
On the other hand TloU 1 has more than 11 years in the market with many discounts, multiple versions, and Tv series hype as advantage over TloU 2.
"You may be right that the remake sold well, though how many of those sales are from people getting the $10 upgrade like what I did?"
I'm sure a lot of people also bought the remastered physical copies at full price. But that's not relevant. The point is TloU 2 remastered sold well both physical & digital and that will add to TloU 2 total sales. Right now TloU 2 could be at 13-14 million copies and it will sell more with the tv show season 2.
After so much talk about tlou2, so many releases of the games, remakes, remasters, the talk about the show, I think I had enough of tlou for a lifetime.
@trev666 Really? TLOU 2 sold 1/3 of what first game sold. I have no doubts that game was profitable, but it isn't like series as a whole has upwards trajectory.
Not to mention that I'm 100% sure that series lost portion of a fanbase due to story of second game.
@Flaming_Kaiser The ending is fine. The whole point of the game is that actions have consequences and constantly chasing hate/revenge leads to bad outcomes. Having a Hollywood style sunshine and rainbows ending would be the worst thing they could do to THAT game.
Though I would like to see a third game which left Ellie in a slightly better place where the ending again fit the whole meta-narrative of that game.
@Kriandis Perfectly worded. Wholeheartedly agree.
@BlueLobster Honestly that sounds awful and so out of keeping with The Last of Us, like some Hollywood fan-fiction where every thread has to be neatly resolved and tied up in sunshine and rainbows. When has The Last of Us ever been about that?
I'd love to see a third game with a warm glimmer of hope at the end but absolutely not some unrealistic "everything is perfect" ending, that has never been what the series is about. It's far closer to real life.
@CP2
Found one bob!
Removed - offensive remarks
The sequel gets leaked and death threats sent to its actors and creators. His latest project, after a monumental effort to produce a "LoU" Multiplayer suite hasc since been canceled, is ALSO leaked and bemoaned by basement dwelling slurms. At best, explore what would've been a third story through the upcoming television show instead of years dragging your chin through this vapid nerdscape of unappreciative blobs.
Better replace it with something big. Cause that was a big Ip for them. Not so sure yet about intergalactic. We know very little about it. But the only reasons i buy a PS console is for the few exclusive games i wanted to play. This gen they are giving me more and more reasons to just play on PC. Both Sony and MS are multi platform publishers. I will wait a few more years before i switch to PC. But with Sony’s push to live service games and smaller and smaller windows of their games coming to PC. This news is another nail in the coffin for PS consoles for me. Which is sad and exciting all in the same.
Thanks, but Im non-buy-nary on it anyway, so dont care
As bleak as the games are, I'd be perfectly content with having the story end with Part 2. I don't really know where else you can go, and what more you can "say" by adding to the plot, outside of (MAJOR SPOILERS)...
...Ellie and Abby reuniting, and coming to the realisation that revenge is not the way, and then working together combining their collective smarts of science and violence to wipe out the infection, rebuild society, and then ultimately becoming an item. Abby uses more science to rebuild Ellie's fingers, and then the two form a band for a big, super upbeat musical finale that is completely at odds with the misery that's come before.
Highly doubt that Druckman would want to go for that, but it'd certainly be a hell of an unexpected narrative swerve for the audience.
Zombie games is a flooded market now. You cannot check the Steam home page without several new ones being promoted. I can see why they would apply the gameplay mechanics to a different genre.
i'm good with that. the franchise has already overstayed its welcome. i would have been perfectly happy if it ended after the first game and there was no TV show. find something else for ND to do, neil!
@Konks It was already flooded when the first game came out in 2013.
@Konks Zombie game always flooded the market every year but the good ones aren't many. TloU can standout among other zombie games not just because the Clicker is quite unique but it also has solid graphic, story, gameplay, and music.
So TLOu p1 was a great game - and I personally thought TLOUp2 blew it out the water... not because it was what I wanted, but because I think it did something different. My problem with a lot of current AAA games, they're so spooked by their costs (they control these) and by the market interest (they don't control these) that they have retreated creatively to the most generic - bland - hands-holding/generic versions of games. Whether you vibed with TLOUp2 - it actually did something worthwhile. Sony games are unfortunately becoming bland... so I hope if they don't jump into TLOUp3, they follow up with new IP - something like Intergalactic. I may not vibe with that game, but I'd prefer that devs actually reach for things... even if it means delaying (or us not seeing) a possible conclusion to Ellie's story.
I only recently played TLoU pt 2, as I had just never got around to it previously and wanted to experience the game ahead of the show. Personally I felt the game was great, and easy holds its own against the first game.
Joel's ending made perfect sense as he had led a pretty terrible life inbetween Sarah and Jackson. In Pt1 he even mentions he has been on both sides of the fake holdup. In Pt 2 Ellie even acknowledges that it could have been anyone as he wronged a lot of people. Jackson softened his edges, he just didn't see it coming.
As for Abby I though her character was great. It was a masterstroke how you play as ellie going full rampage mode where you see all the Seattle characters from her perspective and you only ever see negative Abby. Then they flip it and you realise that Abby's group are literally no different from the Jackson group. Yes its hard being shown that Abby is just as popular as Ellie by her friends, but thats the point. Its not meant to be easy, its meant to be real. They are reflection of one another.
As for the ending it was great imo. Abby's journey made her become Joel, she came to realise that Lev was the only thing that mattered. Ellie came to realise that she didn't want the thing she had been chasing the entire time, and it cost her everything.
I would like a Pt 3 set a few years later again and it be the redemption arc to the whole story. They could easily riff on things like Ellie going nomad to be by herself / something happens to Dina & JJ / Abby & Lev found more fireflies and possibly a cure that won't kill Ellie.
I wonder if they will have funding available to make TLOU3 when they lose millions with intergalactic
@themightyant
TY
@themightyant Well lets be honest if they do that why did they even release part 2 the first had a fantastic ending.
Whats the message you are screwed the world is horrible place i can watch the news for that.
